The Return of Ishtar start screen.png

As soon as you put your coin into Namco's 1986 arcade game The Return of Ishtar (both players play upon the same credit), you will be greeted with the screen shown above; it displays three options, "NEW GAME", "LAST GAME CONTINUE" and "PASSWORD GAME CONTINUE". If you choose "NEW GAME", you and your partner will be required to enter your names (up to three characters) and your genders (male or female), before the game begins at Top of the Tower - however, if you choose "LAST GAME CONTINUE", the game will immediately begin at the start of the room in which the last play on that cabinet ended. But if you choose "PASSWORD GAME CONTINUE", you and your partner will again be required to enter your names and genders before being greeted by three more options; "KI", "GIL" and "KI & GIL". If you choose "KI", the first player will be required to enter the six-character password they received the last time they got a game-over - however, if you choose "GIL", the second player will be required to enter only the four-character password they received the last time they got a game-over. But if you choose "KI & GIL", both players will be required to enter the six-character (1UP), and four-character (2UP), passwords they received the last time they got a game-over. You will then be greeted by the list of rooms you had reached, up to the point of the previous game-over; when you have chosen the one that both of you have settled on starting in, you will be required to enter that room's three-character "Room Pass". Any incorrectly-entered password or "Room Pass" will result in the game starting at Top of the Tower, as if you'd chosen "NEW GAME".
