Famine occurs during the first five cycles.

Donor glyph[edit]

When you first enter the void, you will appear in the Unnamed Sister's chamber. She will guide you to collect the Donor heart. Continue to the large tree, and talk to the sister (by using a drop of color). She will explain the situation, where you need to collect color scattered through the chambers.

Collect all small plants in her chamber. Once done, return to her for instructions on how to fill the heart before heading to the water outside.

She will direct you to three chambers.

Pharynx[edit]

Pharynx is the mine left of the sister's chamber. In this area, you will need to collect any plants on the ground, and reach the second heart found at the back. This heart will give you the Shell glyph, which protects you against attacks.

There is also a hidden area: When you look into the abyss, you should see a ledge. If you can reach it (either jumping directly onto the ledge or by attempting to walk along the wall), you will reach a small fenced playground.

Fireflies[edit]

Fireflies is a small reservation, which normally contains predators, but also plants that appear. There are three trees of note, which are small but provide some color.

These trees may be found:

  1. Underneath a staircase
  2. On a corner ledge (requires jumping downward)
  3. In the corner of the top floor.

These trees provide a bit of color if you use the Donor glyph on them. For details, see Fog.

Fog[edit]

Fog is the first garden, and will be your main source of color. In case you miss the glyph, save the game first.

To start a garden, hold CTRL and place a drop of color on the tree. When the camera moves to an overlooking position, draw the Donor glyph: Start at the top of the screen, move down and create a loop at the bottom-left, and finish at the bottom-right. If you receive a message saying you should have used the donor glyph, then it was drawn incorrectly - try reviewing the video of this glyph in your journal, and copying the example.

Try to build at least one of each color you have available. The other trees can be filled with the two primary colors, Emerald and Gold (if available). You can't overfill the trees - if the health of the tree is full (which it should be), any excess color will be refunded.

However, you should not give life to the trees in a single cycle. If you do, you will end up getting a lot of color at once, and getting a glut a few days later when the trees all whither. After blooming a suitable number of trees, return to the sister.

Creatures[edit]

By the second cycle, you will notice that creatures have entered the garden. Kill the creatures in the chambers, and report back to the sister. After this, she will give the Haste heart, which allows you to move more quickly than normal.

After you kill the creatures for the first time, you should avoid rather then attack them. Save your color for more important matters, or at least until you get crimson (which makes your attacks more powerful).

Filling hearts[edit]

Your last task in Famine is to fill the sister's two hearts. Try to collect as much Gold and Emerald as possible, and fill the two hearts. In order to reduce the cost of filling the hearts, be sure to fill at least 100 units of gold in your hearts.

At the very least, you should complete this before the sixth cycle. If you don't, you will be behind schedule, and will need to fill up the two hearts as an immediate priority.
