Trog start screen.png

Once you have inserted your coin(s) into the cabinet of Midway Games's 1990 arcade game Trog, then pressed one (or more) of its Start Buttons, it will proceed to the start screen shown above, where the first player to press a Start Button shall have ten seconds to decide whether to start on Island 1 (no bonus), Island 2 (200,000 bonus), or Island 4 (400,000 bonus) by pushing the joystick left and right to make a selection, then pressing the Punch Button to confirm their choice; once the triceratopses have appeared in their starting corners of the chosen island you will have to start directing them around it to collect all eggs of their colour (they will merely walk over eggs of another triceratops's colour), while watching out for the Trogs (after whom the game is named) who are emerging from the ground and trying to kill them. All the triceratopses have to collect the same amount of eggs, before their "HOME" base opens up - and in a multiplayer game, the islands are obviously not big enough to accommodate a particular number of eggs in up to four colours, so more of them will appear in the empty spaces, as the triceratopses collect them (however, Islands 41-48 feature striped Easter-like eggs that all four triceratopses can collect, and one "HOME" base that opens up for the four of them after they have all been collected). Once one triceratops collects all the eggs of his (or her, in the case of Gwen) colour, his (or her, in the case of Gwen) "HOME" base shall open up on the island; once he (or she, in the case of Gwen) has made it there, you will all be treated to a cutscene of that triceratops doing a unique dance as the text of "(TRICERATOPS NAME)! EXCELLENT!/CONGRATULATIONS!/NICE WORK!/GOOD JOB!/DINO-MITE!" appears above him (or her, in the case of Gwen), and for a multiplayer game, the text of "75,000 POINTS FOR WINNING" shall appear at the bottom of the screen. There are also three types of bonus stages: Trog Feasts, where the triceratopses will automatically be tyrannosauruses, and have to eat all the Trogs on the island within twenty-five seconds (if they manage it, the text "OUTRAGEOUS MEAL! 100,000 POINTS FOR EVERYONE." will be displayed on the screen), Trog Barbecues, where the triceratopses will automatically have the Chilli Pepper power, and have to burn all the Trogs on the island within twenty seconds (again, if they manage it, the text "YOU ARE HOT! 100,000 POINTS FOR EVERYONE." shall be displayed), and Diamond Mines where the triceratopses have to collect all the jewels on the island within fifteen seconds (once again, if they manage this the text of "ROCK ME BABY! 100,000 POINTS FOR EVERYONE." shall be displayed) - however, if they cannot manage it the text "TIME IS UP!" will appear instead, once the timer has run out. Also, after a bonus stage (regardless of what happened on it), you shall all get treated to a cutscene of "Trogs' Cave", which depicts a Brown Trog thinking of a new way to kill the triceratopses; if a player decides to join the game while a stage is in progress, all the remaining eggs on it shall automatically get changed to the aforementioned striped Easter-like ones (as no eggs of the joining triceratops's colour were programmed in at the start), and the bonus for winning shall be lowered to 25,000. And on some islands, one egg will "shine" briefly at the start of the stage - and if you collect this one last, a warp hole will open up on the island, and if any triceratops falls into it, the text of "TIME WARP! (TO ISLAND X). 300,000 FOR EVERYONE." will appear on screen (X being the island's number).
