At the beginning of the game, you can choose whether to start a new adventure or continue a previous one, by entering a password (see the appropriate section). Ufouria is an action and adventure game. You will have to explore the vast world of the game first to find your friends and then to find your way home. At the beginning of the game, you can only control Bop-Louie, but as you find your three friends Freeon-Leon, Shades and Gil, you can also bring one of them into action by selecting it from the sub-screen. You can only control one character at a time and by switching from one character to another, your life points value will remain unchanged.
Along the way you will encounter many enemies that will stand in your way. The basic attack to kill them consists in jumping over them, pressing to jump and then to crush them. By killing an enemy you can get a ball or a crystal. You can pick up a ball pressing and then press it again to throw it at other enemies. A crystal instead will make you gain 2 life points and to collect it you just have to go through it. In the course of the game, you will then be able to obtain special weapons, which will allow you to kill enemies more easily. You will also meet some bosses, which you will have to defeat in order to proceed and retrieve useful items. When you encounter a boss, you will not be able to leave the room it is in until you defeat it.
Your life energy is represented by the life points shown at the top left of the screen. You will start the game with 10 life points. If you are hit by an enemy or dangerous floor, you will lose some. To increase your life points you will need to collect crystals, or use the Medicine or the Water of Life, after finding them. During the game you will then find special items that will allow you to increase your maximum life point value. If you run out of life points, it's game over. You can restart the adventure by selecting the "Continue" option. You will restart the game with 10 life points and with all the items you had collected up to that moment, but starting again from the initial area.
