Game start[edit]

1423 B.C., North America: game start

When the Stranger starts the game, she is in North America in 1423 B.C., completely naked (i.e. she has not even the most basic weapon and armor). The nearest town is in Europe.

Since the Stranger has no weapons, she cannot fight enemies, and she has to run. In the upgraded version, you can press Alt+R and restore your game, if necessary.

Towne Linda[edit]

1423 B.C., Europe: towne Linda, Time Gate, Lord British's Castle

Travel north-west, get across the Bering Strait, keep going west through Asia. Eventually, you will reach Europe and the town of Linda. Purchase the best weapon according to your agility, then purchase an armor according to your strength and remaining gold. Get the weapon [R]eady and [W]ear the armor.

Weapon suggestion: if your agility is 29 or higher, buy a sword n.5; if agility is between 21 and 28, buy a bow n.4.

Armor suggestion: buy a chain armor n.3 (provided that your strength is 19 or higher).

Ignore the stables and the pub De Varg.

Village of Le Jester[edit]

1423 B.C., Africa: village of Le Jester

Leave Linda and travel south, to Africa. In the village of Le Jester, purchase a good amount of food.

Buy as much food as you can from Alfred's Fish & Chips.

Ignore the oracle "O", the Holy Spells and the Wizardry shops.

Blue tassles and pirate ships[edit]

Ultima2 enemy 04pirates.png

Back to the wilderness, fight enemies until you can afford the best armor you can wear (depending on your strength). If you start running low on health, visit Lord British's Castle.

With a weapon, an armor and a good stock of food, you are ready for the next task: get a ship.

Why is it important? Because the Stranger consumes no food while on the ship, but she eats one meal every 6 steps, even in town. Therefore, find a ship and stay onboard the ship as much as possible. This way, you will cut your primary expense, and you can start saving money to upgrade your attributes.

Go to the Pub De Varg in Towne Linda, and give 4G tips to the barkeep. In return, he will give you a hint about blue tassles.

  • 4G tip: "Sailors wear blue tassles!" "Some fighters wear magic helms!"
Ultima2 class4 thief.png

In order to get onboard a pirate ship, you need a blue tassle. This item is won from defeated thieves. Since a thief can drop 17 different items, the chance of getting a blue tassle is 1 out of 17. Never mind: keep fighting enemies.

  • Strategic suggestion: If a pirate ship appears, but you have no blue tassles yet, DO NOT fight it! Ships appear very seldom. Let the pirates follow you along the seashore until you can board their ship.

If you get low on health points (HP), enter the time gate in Europe and visit Lord British's castle in 1990 A.D.

Overseas locations[edit]

Lord British's Castle.
Motionless characters from both 1423 B.C. and 1990 A.D. are shown.

Once you have boarded a pirate ship, you can explore the rest of the world in this age.

  • Age signpost: it is located in Australia; it reads "1423 B.C." in the original game, but "300 B.C." in the C64 port.
  • Tower in South America: the Stranger is still too weak to brave a dungeon right now.
  • Dungeon in Greenland: the Stranger is still too weak to brave a dungeon right now.

Lord British castle[edit]

In Lord British Castle during 1423 B.C., aside from restoring health, you can learn the beginning of the main quest from Brother Antos. This character can be met near the chapel.

(He must be a time-traveler: saints, including Saint Joseph/San Jose, only exist after the beginning of the Christian age.)
Ultima2 class2 cleric.png Bishop Bob SE, chapel Hint: "Confess to Brother Antos!"
Ultima2 class2 cleric.png Brother Antos SE, chapel Hint: "Search the stars for my kin!"
(He must be a time-traveler: you'll meet him again 3400 years later.)
Ultima2 npc merchant.png Andre the French chef NE, mess hall kitchen Flavor text: "I drink, therefore I am!"
(He must be a time-traveler: you'll meet him again 3400 years later.)
Ultima2 class3 fighter.png Commander Decker NE, mess hall kitchen Flavor text: "Is it soup yet???"

Preparing for time travel[edit]

You can leave 1423 B.C. for good, once you have at least one blue tassle, 1200 Gold coins, 1000 food rations and 1000 health points.

Ships cannot get through the Time Doors; this is why you need the supply of food, health points and a blue tassle.
