FF7 Magic Materia templates

I think Magic Materia3, 4 and 5 are fine as tables. They are tabulated data and should be arranged the way they are. -- Prod 18:02, 5 October 2006 (CDT)

You're right. I think I was getting a little too excited when tagging those for detabulation. :-P What does need to be done to them is some work making them look a little more like other table templates. --DrBob (Talk) 01:07, 6 October 2006 (CDT)
Such as? -- Mason11987 (Talk - Contributions) 10:39, 6 October 2006 (CDT)
Such as the infobox. For one thing, they need borders. --DrBob (Talk) 11:35, 6 October 2006 (CDT)
How's this? -- Prod 12:11, 6 October 2006 (CDT)

Vandalism!

I am urgently reporting to you about vandilism I have discovered. The vandalism was perpetrated by Fuckyoubitch. It includes the use of slang and inappropriate language on pages in the MapleStory article. 0-172 18:27, 7 October 2006 (CDT)

I was eating, so I didn't notice it straight away, but Prod has restored the page, and I've permanently blocked the user. Thanks for telling me. :-) --DrBob (Talk) 13:41, 7 October 2006 (CDT)

My Guide

Hi Dr Bob. I've been working on many guides but have finally finished one. Can you please check it and see if I've missed anything out, because I really want it to be completed and show everything. BBA Guide Thanks.

I was watching this guide's progress as you were doing it (I was bored), and I'm wondering why you decided to remove the {{Header Nav}} references on some of the pages? All pages in a guide should reference {{Header Nav}}, but only the main one should have the "num" parameter. Other than that (which I've fixed), it looks good, although you haven't finished the classes page yet. :-P --DrBob (Talk) 08:38, 8 October 2006 (CDT)
Well it said "Return back to Big Brain Academy" so I thought that would be enough. I'll add the navigation back in then. I'll finish off the Classes page now. I've done the ACWW calendar. Its now all "4" as you would say, completed (after I've done Classes!) Phoenix499 08:42, 8 October 2006 (CDT)
One of the advantages of having the {{Header Nav}} is that people can use it to view that guide's TOC on any page, just by either clicking the "Table of Contents" link, or pressing the "Show" link to expand the TOC on that page. Good work! :-) --DrBob (Talk) 08:49, 8 October 2006 (CDT)

Strategy Wiki National Pokedex

Oops, sorry. You have a point there. Whats going to be done about it? 0-17219:20, 8 October 2006 (CDT)

I've deleted it for the moment, but it can soon be put back if discussion in community issues is positive. :-) --DrBob (Talk) 14:27, 8 October 2006 (CDT)

Alignment

I noticed you helped me out with my Oddworld: Abe's Oddysee Guide and was wondering if it was possible to have the three images line up on this page? Thanks, --Kyron 12:41, 9 October 2006 (CDT)

Done, to the best of my ability in 5 minutes. :-P --DrBob (Talk) 13:14, 9 October 2006 (CDT)

Request for a bot?

Hi DrBob, I have a big favor to ask of you. I decided to create the Fighter Portraits category because the number of portraits are going to grow and it just seemed to make sense. But now all of the other portraits are in the Characters category. Is it possible for you to script a bot that could recategorize all of the existing portraits to the new category? They all start with "Portrait_" so it should be easy to script. If it's not possible, I'll go ahead and start doing it manually, but I thought since you had some bot scripting experience, I would ask you about it first. Thanks, whether you can help or not. Procyon 13:50, 10 October 2006 (CDT)

Ho ho. It's good that you ask this now, because I've just got my bot working again. It'll take me a little time to find some free time and get it all set up, but I'll do it. :-) In fact, I'll go one better, and add them to Category:Fighter portraits. (Proper capitalisation.) :-P --DrBob (Talk) 15:14, 10 October 2006 (CDT)
LOL, touché. Sorry about the Camel Case. Again, it's the programmer in me. Which leads to my embaressment that I don't know how to script a wikipedia bot. Do you have any site that you could point me to in order to learn? Thanks very much, and thank you as always for your assistance. Procyon 15:58, 10 October 2006 (CDT)
I can't think of anywhere, really, unless you want to root around on Wikipedia, but all the bots there which have source available are in Perl, and I can't understand it (my Perl knowledge is severely limited). Mine's written in PHP, and the source is available here. It's a bit of a mess at the moment, but it might be useful to you. :-) --DrBob (Talk) 16:43, 10 October 2006 (CDT)

Wikify

How are we supposed to wikify ASCII diagrams? -- Prod 11:35, 12 October 2006 (CDT)

Make nice diagrams of them. We're no longer in the stone age. ;-) --DrBob (Talk) 11:56, 12 October 2006 (CDT)

FF1

I THINK I got everything from wikibooks here. I just went to the category and grabbed everything that appeared to match naming convention, I'm going to poke through and find the things that were missed, but all those pages probably need to be fixed to be Final Fantasy/Sub page or whatever. But I figured I might as well do it before Minun convinced them to delete it. -- Mason11987 (Talk - Contributions) 10:45, 15 October 2006 (CDT)

Good good. I think we should consider banning Minun for a while, since he's being so disruptive and downright rude. --DrBob (Talk) 11:12, 15 October 2006 (CDT)
I think that would be a little harsh, nothing he has done is really outright vandalism, but if that does occur then by all means. I think it'd be jumping the gun if we did so, and I think we'd be the more mature one if we didn't. -- Mason11987 (Talk - Contributions) 11:16, 15 October 2006 (CDT)

Header organization

We've been kinda undoing each others work here and there with respect to the order of templates at the top of the page. Personally, I add the AGN first, and then worry about the other tags, but I don't really care one way or the other. With the discussions on Community Issues, it would probably be better below the wip/stub/etc tags, and I'll try to do it your way. However, I feel the {{series disambig}} should go below the AGN. It's more part of the content, whereas the AGN is more of a header. I also think it looks better below. -- Prod 15:45, 17 October 2006 (CDT)

OK. I was putting the series disambig up at the top because that's what Wikipedia does, although it's not a perfectly analogous situation, so I'm fine with going along with your way of doing it. :-) --DrBob (Talk) 15:48, 17 October 2006 (CDT)

Category:Pages now merged into other pages

Sorry I'm making such a mess on your talk page >.>. What's supposed to be done with those? On wikipedia they keep all their redirects, no matter how useless. But here useless redirects are deleted. Merging histories (i'm assuming like the transwiki process) would make a mess, but I would assume it has to be done. -- Prod 16:47, 17 October 2006 (CDT)

I've got no idea, and ianal. You'd probably want to talk to Garrett (and apologise to him from me for forwarding so much stuff to him :-P ). --DrBob (Talk) 16:50, 17 October 2006 (CDT)
None of these pages have history >.>. -- Prod (Talk) 10:38, 23 October 2006 (CDT)
If you look at the "restore deleted versions" thing, it lists the edit history, but this is far from ideal. Please tell me if you can find a better way to merge the damned things without going through all the fuss of the procedure for merging edit histories of copy-pasted pages. --DrBob (Talk) 10:47, 23 October 2006 (CDT)
This page you gave me just suggests, moving troublesome pages to the new pages talk space. The example isn't exactly the same, but it serves a similar purpose.

"An appropriate procedure for such a case is to forego the history merge, and instead handle the situation much like a normal merge; put a note pointing to the other version of the page on the article's talk page. If it is inappropriate to leave the second copy in the main article space, you can archive the duplicate page to Talk: space (i.e. by moving it to some suitable title, such as Talk:RandomArticle/OldVersion)."

Is that not what I've been doing? :-S --DrBob (Talk) 11:09, 23 October 2006 (CDT)

Example: Page oldA info copied into newA.

You are creating a link on Talk:newA to oldA. The suggestion is to move oldA -> Talk:newA/oldA, and put a link on Talk:newA. -- Prod (Talk) 11:28, 23 October 2006 (CDT)
OK. Do you plan to deal with the rest of the pages marked for merging atm? I'm rather busy. :-( --DrBob (Talk) 11:32, 23 October 2006 (CDT)
I realized that moving them to the talk space was kinda pointless. Might as well leave em where they are and put in redirects. -- Prod (Talk)
But then we have a load of pointless redirects. The histories are preserved even if the pages are deleted, so I feel that they should just be deleted. --DrBob (Talk) 13:31, 23 October 2006 (CDT)
The history is preserved, but isn't accessible to the average user, making these redirects required. -- Prod (Talk) 13:45, 23 October 2006 (CDT)
How about dumping the history onto the new page's talk page? --DrBob (Talk) 14:28, 23 October 2006 (CDT)
That should satisfy the GFDL. It's just a matter of making it look nice :) Perhaps just mention the names of the contributors, rather than pasting the full history (considering most of the history is just me and Horstjens moving pages around :P) -- Prod (Talk) 14:36, 23 October 2006 (CDT)
I think it would probably be easier just to select the history, copy and paste. It copies across fine. :-) --DrBob (Talk) 15:16, 23 October 2006 (CDT)
Yea, but it looks messy, and shows off all the useless page moving :P. I don't really care though, it's not my main guide. -- Prod (Talk) 15:27, 23 October 2006 (CDT)
You might find User:Prod/Redirect list interesting. -- Prod (Talk) 20:08, 23 October 2006 (CDT)

Bot

Your bot has decided to categorize tons of stuff as a fighter portrait... -- Prod 14:37, 18 October 2006 (CDT)

Ack. I leave it for half an hour to eat tea, and it goes crazy. Leave them; I'll sort it out. The bot is now grounded; sorry for the inconvenience. >:-( --DrBob (Talk) 15:13, 18 October 2006 (CDT)
Poor bot. Just don't send him to his room if he's got a TV in there, its counter productive :P -- Prod 15:41, 18 October 2006 (CDT)
Nah, nothing that bad. I just rearranged some of his innards. :-D --DrBob (Talk) 15:46, 18 October 2006 (CDT)

Delete

As you have probably noticed, I've been made a sysop :D. I'm kinda new to this so I'm not really sure how some of this works. For example, how do you get that text when deleting (Content was xxx and only contributor was xxx). -- Prod 10:34, 19 October 2006 (CDT)

It's automatically put in the reason box by MediaWiki if appropriate (e.g. if there is little content). Otherwise, the reason box is left blank, and you should fill it out yourself. :-) --DrBob (Talk) 10:38, 19 October 2006 (CDT)

Fixed. -- Prod (Talk) 16:54, 2 November 2006 (CST)

Cleanup

Why add the descriptions to those templates twice? It seems to me that it defeats the purpose. The <div>s or <p> tags can still be moved in a user CSS. --inarius(T) 17:13, 20 October 2006 (CDT)

As I mentioned in community issues, I think it would still be appropriate to have the markup for the main header boxes present. For one thing, for those who use skins other than BlueCloud. They are hidden through CSS in the common CSS file, which I will presently move to the BlueCloud CSS file. --DrBob (Talk) 17:16, 20 October 2006 (CDT)
I thought what you meant was that you would move the <p> tags you placed in the Toolbox to the artocle body. Also, I don't see the problem with other skins - but I haven't tested them since my orginal Toolbox spec. --inarius(T) 17:20, 20 October 2006 (CDT)
Placing these templates in the toolbox cannot work for the other skins, as they don't have a toolbox. The system is working fine now, so just leave it as it is please. --DrBob (Talk) 17:21, 20 October 2006 (CDT)
I never said I would change anything, I'm confused as to your edits and want to discuss them. And I know they don't have a toolbox, but they don't get moved or hidden either, which seems like appropriate behavior - any skin-specific styles can be defined seperately. Originally, the tags would just appear at the bottom of the page. With the addition of the paragraph tag, and the restoring of the original template box, that makes two descriptions - which I didn't expect was what we wanted and still makes no sense to me. Even from a maintainability standpoint. Correct one description, then correct the other... If the current description HTML needs to be made more flexible to better allow for the best representation on all skins, then we should just fix that and stick with the one. Also, I'm sorry if it was too early to bring them into production - We had several sysops complimenting the final result, and from what I could tell no objections were raised. You had only added the first descripion to the template prototypes, not the second, or I would have commented on them. --inarius(T) 17:36, 20 October 2006 (CDT)
The descriptions I copied into the expandable sections in the toolbox divs should be cut down. It was a quick copy-paste of the original descriptions from the header boxes, and really would serve better if it was shorter. To this end, the header boxes themselves cannot just be the toolbox divs with different CSS, as there will be different content. I'll fix this. --DrBob (Talk) 17:58, 20 October 2006 (CDT)
Ok, but it still seems very silly to me to have multiple versions of essentially the same thing just because the skin is different. It won't bother me on other skins, so I won't push it - but I think people who decide to use other skins because they prefer them, should rightly exepct they will see the same content. I'm sure one could find a good middle-ground: a description suitable for both the header boxes and the popup. That being the case, the template could have built in styles for the header box color and border which are overriden by the toolbox. It would look largely the same as it does now on BlueCloud, but with much friendlier (smaller / easier to edit / etc.) code. --inarius(T) 18:09, 20 October 2006 (CDT)
I should've thought of this earlier, but it's just not possible in the current situation to have the same piece of markup do both things, as the JS is moving it around in the DOM, and CSS can't easily "move" it back. Besides, nobody should be editing templates such as {{cleanup}} regularly, so there should be no problems there. --DrBob (Talk) 18:22, 20 October 2006 (CDT)
As I understand it, the JS is exclusive to BlueCloud.js. It sohuld be no problem to get this to work as expected in other skins. You simply... don't add the JS for the other skins (and it isn't there currently). --inarius(T) 18:17, 21 October 2006 (CDT)
But then you end up with header boxes with unverbose text in them in the other skins. --DrBob (Talk) 02:39, 22 October 2006 (CDT)

Sockpuppets?

User:Digitldud and User:Thebrat did very similar vandalisms. I'm not sure if you can check it, but I don't think I can. -- Prod (Talk) 23:30, 20 October 2006 (CDT)

Any "person" who adds links to medicine sites like that is a bot, and should be banned. I've banned both of them infinitely. --DrBob (Talk) 05:39, 21 October 2006 (CDT)
I don't know if it's shown up here yet, but we had several waves of random # usernames posting about 15 random #'s on hundreds of different pages. If either of you ever see that (I can only assume it'll happen here too). Just go banning and reverting ASAP. -- Mason11987 (Talk - Contributions) 11:13, 21 October 2006 (CDT)
It was before my time, but I think we got that about half-way through May 2006. --DrBob (Talk) 11:22, 21 October 2006 (CDT)

Panoramic Images

Those look awesome! At the moment it replaces the images in the pages with a QuickTime picture. What all types can it do that for, and will it include any of the actual files in the page (inline)? -- Prod (Talk) 12:02, 22 October 2006 (CDT)

I don't think MediaWiki can make previews of things other than images, but it does have icons for many file types (around 24, I believe). --DrBob (Talk) 12:05, 22 October 2006 (CDT)
I've seen animated gifs, if that's useful information. -- Mason11987 (Talk - Contributions) 13:02, 22 October 2006 (CDT)

Microsoft Game Studios -> Microsoft?

I would say split the Microsoft company from the Game studios. Let the MS company be the "systems" type and let the game studios handle the publishing. -- Prod (Talk) 15:13, 2 November 2006 (CST)

OK. Feel free. :-) --DrBob (Talk) 15:46, 2 November 2006 (CST)
Done. I left Chip's Challenge because I think it was released before Microsoft Game Studios was created. -- Prod (Talk) 16:35, 2 November 2006 (CST)
OK. :-) --DrBob (Talk) 16:37, 2 November 2006 (CST)

Adminship

Hey, Dr.Bob. I was wondering, is there anyway to request adminship on Strategy Wiki? If not is there any criteria that needs to be met to become an administrator? I was just wondering because, though I have been here a short while, I have gained plentiful experience at editing and the like. Just to put it in, I am an administrator at another wiki, so that should provide experience. I just wanted to ask about how to become an administrator here. 0-172 15:50, 11 November 2006 (CST)

I don't think we have an official way to request being promoted to sysop, other than talking to echelon directly. However, I don't think it would be a good idea for you to become a sysop at the moment. For one thing, we've got plenty for our current size, and I just looked at some of your contributions. Although you've made a lot of very good and significant contributions, I've noticed that you often take two or three edits to get things right, and while the final result is good, it's not such a good way to go about things. Additionally, I don't think you actually need to be a sysop to keep contributing useful things. I'd say you should consider asking about it again in a couple of months, and in the mean time try to concentrate on getting things right first time, and keep up the good work! :-) I hope you understand. --DrBob (Talk) 10:29, 11 November 2006 (CST)
Yeah, I understand. For one, I know I don't need to be a sysop to contribute good things, I will contribute good things doubtless of whether I am a sysop or not. Thanks for the comments, I will work on getting things right the first time. 0-172 16:40, 11 November 2006 (CST)
