Fine then. I'll get rid of my category. :P Wikipedia has tons of "users who X" categories and they seem to tolerate them, but whatever, I'll get rid of it. I thought it would be an easy way to manage the users from Abxy who are participating in this project. Hell, we should be working on something similar to Wikipedia's WikiProjects if anything. Just trying to start something up BUT IF YOU HAVE TO SHOOT IT DOWN... :P --Sakurina 16:08, 30 December 2006 (CST)

Perhaps not a perfect solution, but Special:Whatlinkshere/User:Sakurina/UBJump
Yeah, thought of that right after he took it off... I would have thought it up faster if it wasn't on the sidebar. D: What's with the talk page being on the sidebar? That makes no sense! --Sakurina 16:29, 30 December 2006 (CST)
I think we're a bit small to have little communities like that spring up: at most you'll have a couple of users in the category, and that's just a waste of database space. You'll all know each other anyway, if you're contributing to a guide a lot. --DrBob (Talk) 06:32, 31 December 2006 (CST)

Hitman: Blood Money/Walkthrough

Copyvio? http://www.ocmodshop.com/ocmodshop.aspx?a=493, http://www.gamerhelp.com/xbox/HitmanBloodMoney/109940.shtml . I've left some questions on the author's talk page. There goes your nice empty talk page ^_^. Actually, after a bit more googling: http://www.google.ca/search?q=%22So,+all+I%27m+doing+here+is+giving+the+path+I+used%22&hs=i4Q&filter=0 . Oh, and the guy is named sha_dar on gfaqs -- Prod (Talk) 18:24, 13 November 2006 (CST)

See what he says, but remember: if you're in doubt, tag a page as copyvio. It can always be removed later, so it's better to be safe than illegal. ;-) --DrBob (Talk) 00:59, 14 November 2006 (CST)
Since there has been no reply, I deleted the pages. -- Prod (Talk) 12:35, 28 November 2006 (CST)
Good work. :-) --DrBob (Talk) 15:17, 28 November 2006 (CST)

Animal Crossing images

I have a lot of fish and bug images to upload. Here is the first: File:ACWW Angelfish.jpg

If you could have a look at the categories before I continue to upload everything. I was also wondering if we could do a category for AC:WW Fish images and AC:WW Bug images as there is so many of them. Anyway let me know! --Minx 06:41, 17 November 2006 (CST)

That looks fine. For fish you should use Category:Animal Crossing: Wild World fish images instead of Category:Animal Crossing: Wild World images, and for bugs you should use Category:Animal Crossing: Wild World bug images. :-) --DrBob (Talk) 11:00, 17 November 2006 (CST)
That's great! Thanks!! --Minx 11:13, 17 November 2006 (CST)

Media and Input

What's this all about? --DrBob (Talk) 01:10, 18 November 2006 (CST)

I didn't know that that was nessecary here. I deleted it, because I haven't seen that anywhere else on Strategy Wiki. I thought that was only a Wikipedia kind of thing. 0-172 18:13, 18 November 2006 (CST)

Nope. You haven't seen it here because it's new, but it should be used. --DrBob (Talk) 12:42, 18 November 2006 (CST)

Bot status

Can I get bot status for User:Auto Prod Bot? For now, its going to be used for minor odd jobs (like StrategyWiki:Community Issues#Category renaming until I can figure out how to write my own. I'll warn you before I try anything major ;) (and it will always be attended by me). -- Prod (Talk) 22:38, 20 November 2006 (CST)

I've made it a bot and a sysop. Have fun. :-) --DrBob (Talk) 00:50, 21 November 2006 (CST)

Footer Nav

File:Footer Nav.gif
Example problem

Something funky is going on the with {{Footer Nav}} on the The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time/Walkthrough page. When expanding the ToC it kinda expands the Nav box, but the ToC shows up outside the box. Here's a sample. -- Prod (Talk) 21:14, 6 December 2006 (CST)

Fixed. (All it required was a {{-}} after the ToC inclusion.) --DrBob (Talk) 00:40, 7 December 2006 (CST)

Help! Super Mario 64 DS/? Switch. -- Prod (Talk) 23:04, 2 January 2007 (CST)

You can't have question marks in page names, as they have a special meaning in URLs (even when encoded). You'll have to think of a different name for the page, which doesn't include a question mark. --DrBob (Talk) 06:15, 3 January 2007 (CST)

Category:Final Fantasy IV images

Hey man I just finished tagging all 200+ FF4 images with this category so they are now all in one place. One problem though, almost every single image file name starts with 'FF2' instead of 'FF4' we need to find (hopefully an easy) a way to move all the images to the correct file name so that when images from FF2 proper are added they won't get mixed up. After thats done we'll of course need to update every page that includes any of the images to reflect the file name change. --Argash 06:24, 3 January 2007 (CST)

Oh blimey. That's going to take a lot of work. Perhaps you should talk to Prod, since his bot is the only one working at the moment. I'll see what I can do with mine, but I can't guarantee anything. --DrBob (Talk) 09:25, 3 January 2007 (CST)
My bot isn't that smart (yet, which can be a while). A topic to watch is on bugzilla. -- Prod (Talk) 17:41, 3 January 2007 (CST)
Hmmm...I suppose technically my bot could do it, but it would take a while. Are you sure you want all the images starting with "FF2" to be changed? (Are they all in the FFIV images category?) --DrBob (Talk) 02:10, 4 January 2007 (CST)
We probably have some time before it needs to be done. It just needs to be done before someone starts working on the FF2 guide. I tagged every image used by the guide and put them into that category, before that the category didn't exist so I'd say it's safe to say that every image in that category that starts with FF2 should be changed to say FF4. --Argash 03:22, 4 January 2007 (CST)

X-Plane

Seems to be a program for simulation rather than a game (refer to WP:X-Plane). I would say we should get it undeleted and just move any new info there. -- Prod (Talk) 10:50, 5 January 2007 (CST)

Looking at the Wikipedia article, it does seem to be in gaming categories, and there's nothing saying it isn't a game. The program's website itself is particularly unhelpful, but I think the guide should stay here. --DrBob (Talk) 06:03, 6 January 2007 (CST)

Trouble with link colors on the new zelda templates

Prod suggested you might have a better idea on this problem could you take a look and see if you can find what we're missing? --Argash 09:17, 6 January 2007 (CST)

I can think of a way to do it, but that would require adding rules to the site-wide CSS, and I don't think that's appropriate for a guide-specific template. As Prod says, it's best not to detract from the unified theme by changing the link colour for certain things, and so I believe the best solution to this problem is to not have the title as a link, and rather link to the appropriate page in some text in the main area of the template. --DrBob (Talk) 10:43, 6 January 2007 (CST)

Adminship

Well, as you advised, I worked on getting things right the first time (I am better at it) and waited a few months to ask about adminship again. So... How about it? 0-172 20:30, 6 January 2007 (CST)

You certainly have improved recently. What would being an admin help you to accomplish? --DrBob (Talk) 16:41, 6 January 2007 (CST)
Being an admin, I could do more. With admin powers, I can delete things if need be(instead of relying on administrators to delete things for me). Also with admin powers I could help guard the site against spammers and vandals(though they are very rare here). 0-172 23:51, 6 January 2007 (CST)
Let me discuss it with some people. :-) --DrBob (Talk) 10:52, 7 January 2007 (CST)

Mason11987 got FFXII, Dukeruckley edits infrequently, and Inarius has major deadlines at work. Sakurina, Garrett and Procyon work mostly as writers. Leaving you and me as editors. So, here's a few questions for 0-172:

  1. Have you read WP:WP:Administrators, specifically WP:WP:Administrators#Trivial matter?
  2. Do you want to do more writing guides, or keeping the site clean?

I'm mainly interested in your answer to #2. Note that if you want to help keep the site clean, you will be expected to continue doing that. The only reason I'm being this critical at the moment is because we only get like 500->1k edits per day, which isn't that difficult to keep up with. As we get more people joining, we will definitely need more people. -- Prod (Talk) 11:54, 7 January 2007 (CST)

I have gone over the pages you've mentioned above. I understand the trivial matter statement. To answer your second question, I have an interest in both. I enjoy writing guides, but I would also like to assist in keeping the site clean, if it is at all possible to do both. If it is not possible to do both, I would be content to do either one. 0-172 23:58, 7 January 2007 (CST)

Subpages

Sorry! I didn't intend it to pan out like that. It was for the game final fantasy v, by the way, I'll go about fixing it immediately. Thanks for telling me.--Froglet 01:39, 19 January 2007 (CST)

StrategyWiki:Wikibooks Import List

I noticed you had added some XML dumps to the list back in November. Do we just Special:Import them, and then cleanup? or do you need a program to upload it page by page? From what I remember, import is limited to 100 revisions, so will it be able to handle a 10 meg file (StarCraft)? -- Prod (Talk) 00:16, 20 January 2007 (CST)

I think it's best to re-export them from Wikibooks, as they'll all be out of date now. Once that's done, just Special:Import them here. If import is revision-limited, you'll have to export from Wikibooks without the full revision history. --DrBob (Talk) 05:42, 20 January 2007 (CST)

Company year categories

I saw you adding year cats to some of the company cats. It might be better to separate those from the game's themselves with like a Category:1993 for companies or something. -- Prod (Talk) 16:08, 20 January 2007 (CST)

I can't see much point. There would only probably be one company in each such category, and they're not intrusive in the normal categories anyway. --DrBob (Talk) 16:54, 20 January 2007 (CST)
Months/days I agree, but there are something like 250 companies, and only about 20 to 30 years of development. If we start adding them to all the companies, it will start to get mixed in. It's mainly just to keep it away from the gaming years. -- Prod (Talk) 17:16, 20 January 2007 (CST)
You have a point with the numbers, but I still think there'll be an insignificant number of companies in each year, and that it won't affect navigation in any way. If you really want to do something, how about changing their categorisations from [[Category:1993]] to [[Category:1993| ]] so that they're all listed at the beginning of each year? --DrBob (Talk) 01:17, 21 January 2007 (CST)

CheckUser

Can you just check if User:Lord Poof and User:Mister Zook Zook are the same person? Maybe it's just me, but something seems odd about the timings and nature of their edits. -- Prod (Talk) 19:54, 22 January 2007 (CST)

Agreed o_O; Additionally, could you please promote User:Dan to a sysop? He's willing to take care of some more of the administrative tasks around the site. Procyon 20:09, 22 January 2007 (CST)
From the looks of it, he has server access...so he could probably set it himself :P. -- Prod (Talk) 20:44, 22 January 2007 (CST)
I don't believe we have CheckUser installed. I'd just leave them unless something bad happens. --DrBob (Talk) 11:14, 23 January 2007 (CST)
Something seems really funny about StrategyWiki:Collaboration of the Month#Pikmin 2. Zip-O-Rama, Kirbyfan and SuperSmashBrother also seem to be puppets. If they are all the same person they are really skewing the collaboration of the month. Especially StrategyWiki:Collaboration of the Month#Set up policies. I'm going to leave a gentle warning for the moment hoping he will do something on his own, otherwise some proof would be good. -- Prod (Talk) 17:45, 23 January 2007 (CST)
Already took care of it... :P Procyon 17:46, 23 January 2007 (CST)

Award image

I was trying to find a good image to go along with my thank you, and I know the gears aren't particularly game related, but it seemed like the best fit for what I wanted to express. I hope that it's inline with how you intended the Thank Yous to be used :) Procyon 15:34, 29 January 2007 (CST)

I agree with the Thankyou :D. This website has greatly benefited from your insights! -- Prod (Talk) 15:39, 29 January 2007 (CST)
Cheers guys. Credit goes to Blendmaster for making the two images I gave you two. I hope he'll make more in future, so that our award collection can grow! :-D You might want to consider giving an award or two out to people you think have contributed a lot, just to get the party started. --DrBob (Talk) 16:10, 29 January 2007 (CST)

Transwiki

I've managed to write something to transwiki a page with any number of revisions (ie 100+ revisions) from any wikimedia site (wikipedia/wikibooks). Unfortunately, it comes with a heavy price wrt. size (one page I was testing with = 2100 revisions ~ 80 meg). -- Prod (Talk) 20:05, 8 February 2007 (CST)

Sounds fine. Is it integrated with your bot? --DrBob (Talk) 00:22, 9 February 2007 (CST)
No, it's completely separate. I run it on a page to export (this part is auto), and then have to manually Special:Import it here (in 100 revision 1.5 meg chunks). -- Prod (Talk) 00:30, 9 February 2007 (CST)
OK. --DrBob (Talk) 01:28, 9 February 2007 (CST)

Prettytable?

Hi DrBob. Your prettytable looks interesting. What do you envision it being used for? I'm trying to come up with a good standard template as well for the kind of thing I did on this page (with the Pikachu faces). I was using sidebars, but I didn't feel that it was flexible enough for what I needed. I would then take my efforts from that page, and utilize them on pages like this throughout the Pokémon guide. I'd love any suggestions that you may have. Thanks. Procyon 13:49, 9 February 2007 (CST)

I just added a little to the prettytable template which was already there, although it doesn't seem to be working. I intended my addition (which I'm not going to debug because I can't be arsed) to let me easily replace the repetitive stuff at the top of tables in Virtual Wii Console, but I've just abandoned it in favour of leaving them be for the moment. Feel free to appropriate the template, as I think only a couple of pages use it. --DrBob (Talk) 13:57, 9 February 2007 (CST)

Template:New game preload

Why did you remove the ratings property? -- Mason11987 (Talk - Contributions) 08:11, 13 February 2007 (CST)

As I said in community issues, it's never used any more, and putting it there just encourages people to use it, which means more cleanup work. If people want to put on ratings, they should be sufficiently well read-up to know about the "ESRB", "PEGI", etc. properties. --DrBob (Talk) 08:30, 13 February 2007 (CST)

No problem. I'm just making sure you don't accidentally create the wrong page. :-) Great work on the Pokémon guides; keep it up! --DrBob (Talk) 06:45, 24 February 2007 (CST)
Thanks, one more thing, I have made a table to put in Ruby and Sapphire, I've tried it out here, what do you think?
It looks OK, although the colours are a little strong; you might want to mute them down a bit. I presume you're going to put the Pokémon artwork in for the Pokémon in the list? --DrBob (Talk) 06:57, 24 February 2007 (CST)
Sorry, I'm not very good with colours and I will put the artwork in when I've uploaded it, I've just started the Hoenn PokéDex so I will put them in later, any suggestions for colours? --Rocky Rally-X Rock.png (Talk Contributions ) 07:00, 24 February 2007 (CST)
How about that? :-) --DrBob (Talk) 07:05, 24 February 2007 (CST)
Nice, thanks:). Just a question, I have a section of my user page with wiki markup for the pokemon guides I create, is there any way that for the articles in the Pokémon section can have a button instead of the new guide button, then you can have a choice of which game. It would be a big help to me, it may be even more of a help to Proycon because it could probably store all of the tables that he uses as well, it's just a thought, what do you think?
It would be possible, but would take a lot of effort for something which is only going to be useful for a short time (because you've almost finished creating all the pages). It's probably best if you just keep a tab open with the wikimarkup for the Pokémon pages available, or have it in a text editor from which you can copy it to new pages. --DrBob (Talk) 07:18, 24 February 2007 (CST)
Sorry, I failed to mention, I have done less than half of the Pokémon silver/Gold/Crystal walkthrough. There are two regions in the game Jhoto and Kanto, the walkthrough only covers Johto at the moment, Kanto is the same area as in Blue/Red but it is much harder, but I understand that when I'm done, it will be useless, so I will take your advice and put it in a text editor, I will also change the contents to reflect this.--Rocky Rally-X Rock.png (Talk Contributions ) 08:28, 24 February 2007 (CST)

P.S, I'm actually a bit worried about putting the locations in, It's a big spoiler and I don't want to put the spoiler template on the TOC, it's also a nice suprise.

Dashes vs. Colons

Ok so on Template:SSBM Specials you changed the dashes back to colons. I believe that dashes are better for image/text separation within control contexts because it leaves a larger gap. Often times the colons go unnoticed because they are so tiny. Although dashes aren't grammatically correct, its simply a separation; people are going to know that the following is related to the image/control, they don't need a colon to be like oh, I know English, that makes sense. I watch user pages so don't create a separate thread for this on my talk. --Notmyhandle 16:52, 28 February 2007 (CST)

I'm a grammar pedant, so you're not going to get away with using hyphens as dashes, or even in place of colons. Anyway, colons are the canon thing to use on StrategyWiki. ;-) --DrBob (Talk) 16:55, 28 February 2007 (CST)
Every control page I've ever worked on uses hyphens haha. Dashes ftw btw. --Notmyhandle 16:59, 28 February 2007 (CST)
Maybe we should make this a community issue, throw in the ol' voting layout and see what we get? --Notmyhandle 16:59, 28 February 2007 (CST)
I do think the hyphens/dashes/whatever look better then the colons. -- Mason11987 (Talk - Contributions) 20:53, 28 February 2007 (CST)
I think tables look even better (at least when there are multiple consoles :P). -- Prod (Talk) 21:52, 28 February 2007 (CST)
Prod what are you talking about, consoles and tables...? --Notmyhandle 22:20, 28 February 2007 (CST)

I understand now. But hyphens vs. colons! I love tables too but they dont work for open ended content like that on the SSBM Characters page. --Notmyhandle 23:33, 28 February 2007 (CST)
I agree with Prod about tables (just to make that clear) for multiple consoles, but I'm not going to budge over your use of hyphens. Colons indicate a direct relationship between the two operands, while hyphens are used to join words together due to a semantic relationship. Dashes are used either parenthetically, or in a similar fashion to semicolons to indicate related further points — clearly not what's needed to show a relationship between a control button and an action. --DrBob (Talk) 01:25, 1 March 2007 (CST)
But in this case we are using three operands. Image: Title: Description. At least make the colons huge and bold, they are invisible! --Notmyhandle 08:57, 1 March 2007 (CST)
Er, what? When specifying a control, you only use the image and a short description/title. Thus, there are only ever two operands, as far as I'm aware. Making the colons larger would just detract from the image; they only need to be small, to act as separation between the two operands, and make the phrase syntactically correct. :-) --DrBob (Talk) 11:03, 1 March 2007 (CST)

I'm afraid I don't see either of those working, due to the impracticality of them (and the fact that since they're so obscure, nobody would remember to use them). --DrBob (Talk) 11:03, 1 March 2007 (CST)

Done. What about the rest of the errors?--Dan 08:31, 1 March 2007 (CST)
I think most of the issues there would be fixed if we sorted out image hotlinking. I don't think we actually need to fix it, since we discourage it anyway — those images just need to be replaced with uploaded ones. I noticed a problem with the "50 gamer points" thing there, but since I don't know what it's supposed to look like, I can't do much about it. Looking at its source though, it looks like the problem is with the way it's been done, rather than any CSS problems. :-( --DrBob (Talk) 11:07, 1 March 2007 (CST)

OpenSearch

The version of mw we are using has added a "Search with StrategyWiki (English)" link to IE7 and the latest Firefox (not sure about older versions or other browsers). I'm wondering if it would be useful to also add a link on the front page for it. Here's the js for it (haven't tested, but it should work):

function addOpenSearch()
{
 if ((typeof window.external == "object") && ((typeof window.external.AddSearchProvider == "unknown") || (typeof window.external.AddSearchProvider == "function"))) {
  window.external.AddSearchProvider("http://strategywiki.org/w/opensearch_desc.php");
 } else {
 alert("You will need a browser which supports OpenSearch to install this plugin.");
 }
}

As IE7 and FF both allow the user to add it to their list of searches automatically, I'm not sure how useful it is. However, I doubt many people look at that small list that often, and awareness of it might entice more people to StrategyWiki. -- Prod (Talk) 13:25, 1 March 2007 (CST)

huh... never clicked the search engine drop down while on this site before. Pretty cool. I believe I can just click the item and it works. I'm not sure what you mean by a link to add to the front page, or the js code although I may need to read your comment over again later, then again, this comment wasn't directed at me, so it's not an issue lol. But thanks for pointing this out, regardless. -- Mason11987 (Talk - Contributions) 14:20, 1 March 2007 (CST)
That's exactly what I'm talking about. Few people actually click that dropdown (I only noticed when I had google selected and needed to change to imdb and happened to be on the site). What this would allow, is if you had a link like <a href="javascript:addOpenSearch()">Add search</a> it would open a message box to install it (similar to clicking on links at the firefox search engine page). Unfortunately, this link doesn't seem to work (probably a security thing) so it may require something special. -- Prod (Talk) 14:32, 1 March 2007 (CST)
That's pretty sweet! I just added it to mine. Does the little sun symbol in IE just mean its the one for this site (like before adding it)? --Notmyhandle 16:55, 1 March 2007 (CST)
Nice find. I've added it to the front page, and you can add the link elsewhere (only once per page for the moment; ping me if you want to enable usage more than once per page) by just copying the span with the link in. (The link's location is the OpenSearch homepage so that people don't go to somewhere pointless if they don't have JS enabled.) :-) --DrBob (Talk) 17:04, 1 March 2007 (CST)
Works well :D. The only other useful place I can think of is the search page. Also cool is that it has the auto suggest feature, making it much easier to know what's there to search for. -- Prod (Talk) 17:18, 1 March 2007 (CST)

Sortable

We seem to have the wrong version of http://66.225.237.224/w/skins/common/wikibits.js (sortable is found in http://en.wikipedia.org/skins-1.5/common/wikibits.js). -- Prod (Talk) 17:01, 1 March 2007 (CST)

You'd be better talking to Echelon or Dan about it, as I'm about to get some sleep, and I still haven't found the software I need to get server access back. :-\ --DrBob (Talk) 17:04, 1 March 2007 (CST)
I'll try, but you're around more often :P. Cya in the morning. -- Prod (Talk) 17:18, 1 March 2007 (CST)
I took care of it for you guys. :) echelon 01:48, 2 March 2007 (CST)
Explains some of the other errors we had. Good thinking :)--Dan 07:57, 2 March 2007 (CST)

MediaWiki:Common.js isn't loaded. -- Prod (Talk) 17:14, 2 March 2007 (CST)

It should be being loaded as part of [1]. --DrBob (Talk) 17:53, 2 March 2007 (CST)
Ah, my mistake. I've been trying to get the thing to complain about no summaries to show up, bit it isn't working. -- Prod (Talk) 17:58, 2 March 2007 (CST)
