Contact Information[edit]

Do you have an AIM account or email I can contact you at? I'd like to talk with you a bit, especially since you're experienced with Wikibooks. Thanks. --Echelon 16:08, 6 February 2006 (PST)

Project Admin[edit]

Garrett, I've promoted you to SysOp and Bureaucrat because I believe you have exceptional experience with maintaining wikis. I look forward to working with you to make this project a successful one! :) --echelon talk 17:33, 11 March 2006 (PST)

Hey[edit]

Thanks for linking here from wikipedia. This is going to be another wiki that will take up WAY more of my time then I need it to. Congrats on being an Admin too ;).

Hope I can help out here with you guys. Mason11987 17:44, 24 April 2006 (PDT)

Deleting redirects[edit]

Double redirects are fine to delete (like the pointless "system" ones I made), but some like Microsoft should probably stay to redirect to Category:Microsoft. -- Mason11987 (Talk - Contributions) 17:01, 25 April 2006 (PDT)

Ah, yeah, I guess so. GarrettTalk 17:02, 25 April 2006 (PDT)

Template removal[edit]

Hey there. I saw you were merging some stuff from Wikibooks for Adventures of Lolo 2 (Japanese). You may have noticed I was using a template to try to draw levels with small graphics. I had thought that the use of a template would have eased things, but instead it's made things extremely nightmarish. I was wondering if it would be possible to get rid of the material I submitted for the template? I'm using modified versions of screenshots to get the point across and so far that's working out well.

The template basically consisted of images starting with: "Lolo_TileLandxxxx.png", where xxxx.png is the name of the tile. The whole template was a bad idea, and I'm sorry about it. --Sivak 18:25, 13 May 2006 (PDT)

Done. We all have dumb ideas sometime. :) GarrettTalk 19:06, 13 May 2006 (PDT)

Can you meet me in IRC?[edit]

Garrett, if you're going to be here within the next 30 minutes, would you mind meeting me in IRC? I have an idea I want to share. echelon... 04:31, 19 May 2006 (PDT)

Format of Recruitment Pages for Radiata Stories[edit]

Garret, I have added a suggested format for the recruitment pages of Radiata Stories. Since you seem to be the only existing user to have touched it, I thought I would ask you before changing the format.

Basically, I am taking my FAQ (which is available on my home page as well as GameFAQs) and putting it into the wiki. I don't see the recruitment page as being easy to do. Actually, I don't think it is feasible to create it using the current format.

Please look at my suggestion and let me know what you think. wrp103 (Bill Pringle) 10:03, 19 May 2006 (PDT)

Screenshot template[edit]

Garrett, have you got anything planned for the screenshot template? It's sitting at the top of Special:Wantedpages looking lonely, as is the GFDL template. ;-) --DrBob 14:19, 28 May 2006 (PDT)

Successor[edit]

Ha! I was in the process of fixing my dumb mistake 'cause someone else was editing that page, so it wouldn't let me. Now I just look dumb.  :( Oh well, there's plenty more edit for me to do to make me look dumb.

I did it again. "there's plenty more edit for me to do..."--Filthy swine 15:07, 7 June 2006 (PDT)

Relicensing StrategyWiki - request for comments[edit]

Hi, I'm posting this notice on various user pages so that you can vote on our course of action. Please take a look at [[StrategyWiki_talk:License#Relicense_StrategyWiki_Plan_-_This_is_important.21|this topic]] about relicensing StrategyWiki. Your comments and vote would be much appreciated. Thanks.

If you have any questions regarding this matter, feel free to ask me on my talk page! echelon 11:04, 25 June 2006 (PDT)

Common.css[edit]

I just copied it as is while trying to find out what was up with the dynamic nav thing...It doesn't seem to work regardless of skin, see my userpage. -- Mason11987 (Talk - Contributions) 22:40, 26 June 2006 (PDT)

Upscaling[edit]

Hi Garrett. I noticed you upscaled the images on the retro titles I worked on. That's cool, however I was trying to conform to the changes that DrBob made to my Donkey Kong page. I'm comfortable following whichever formatting is correct, but now there's a discrepancy between DK and the other pages that I started. Just want to know which one I should use from now on (and if DK needs to be fixed.) Thanks!

Colons[edit]

Hey Garrett, why do you think the controls are better without colons (Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas/Basics/Controls)? To me, a colon denotes a relationship between the two operands even if one of them is an image (or something else). --DrBob (Talk) 03:32, 26 July 2006 (CDT)

I would say tables are actually worse than lists without colons. It adds a huge amount of wikimarkup with no real benefit, as there're only two variables in the relationship, which can easily (and pleasantly) be expressed using lists (and colons! :-P ). --DrBob (Talk) 05:03, 26 July 2006 (CDT)
I say leave it as a list. Don't use breaks. Apart from the accessibility concerns (how are screen readers supposed to know it's a list?), lists have many advantages when it comes to having machines read and "understand" pages. Besides, lists make it easier to read and understand by humans. :-) --DrBob (Talk) 05:18, 26 July 2006 (CDT)
I tried some table stuff on the page (see the talk page) but came to the conclusion that tables are more trouble than it's worth. Once the button images got inserted I started taking out the lists because the buttons form their own bullets in a way. I agree with DrBob that machine-readability is a goal, but it looks funny to have a little sqare next to the button image. Can we use styles to get a bulletless list? I also don't like the colons. How else can we insert some space between the button and the text?
As for the "On foot" section, the only part with bullets below the button, I think it can be resolved by writing the section like the Xbox section. Insert more modes (fighting, FPS, etc.) and each button only does one thing per mode. Sympleko 05:23, 26 July 2006 (CDT)
Yeah, it would be easy to design a <div id="nobullets"> sort of thing. I'm not conscious enough to work that out tonight though. ;) GarrettTalk 05:25, 26 July 2006 (CDT)
I don't know how feasible that <div id="nobullets"> idea is, because the CSS propery controlling bullet style might not be inheritable, but I can't remember off the top of my head. I think the bullets should stay anyway, as they provide a standard column in a recogniseable and standard style down the left of the list. The buttons can be quite different, so shouldn't be used as bullet points because they don't form an easily recogniseable column. I'm going into some deep design theory here, and I don't think I've explained it very well, but it's basically all to do with creating a uniform and easily-recogniseable style with (in this case) lists. Just using the buttons as bullet points doesn't do this, imho. (This is probably going to be my last post on the matter, as I'm due to leave on holiday for a week or more, but if you come to a conclusion in my absense, try to think of the issues I've raised, and if it deals with them.) --DrBob (Talk) 05:30, 26 July 2006 (CDT)
I wasn't quite saying that the buttons should be used (subjunctive) as bullets, but that they in effect do call out (indicative) the individual points. Maybe we should just leave it as a list (with no colons) and, if we decide to restyle later we can (using CSS) Sympleko 06:27, 26 July 2006 (CDT)
I just tried that, and I don't like it 100% either. I think it's because of the small amount of space between the button and the text. It looks better by adding two nbsp's, but that seems to be unkosher. Is there a way to insert some space on the right in the Image template? Sympleko 06:35, 26 July 2006 (CDT)

MapleStory transwiki[edit]

StrategyWiki:Community Issues#MapleStory Transwiki: I was told you might have some insightful input into this issue

I think everything is ready to be transwikid. As you are the only one editing the StrategyWiki:Wikibooks Import List, I'm assuming that you do the move. Leave me a message when you plan to start, and I'll try to be around, just incase there are unforseen difficulties. -- Prod 18:45, 28 August 2006 (CDT)

They were able to complete the dump properly this time. Is there anything else that you need from me before you get started? I'm sorry if I'm pestering you too much, but I'm anxious to have the guide moved over here so that I can start making some major changes. -- Prod 23:03, 12 September 2006 (CDT)

Image categorisation[edit]

I shouldn't have to tell you off for this, Garrett, but you forgot to categorise the TaleWorlds logo when you uploaded it! Bad! :-P --DrBob (Talk) 02:58, 15 August 2006 (CDT)

The footer nav looks great![edit]

Hi Garrett. I just wanted to say that I saw the footer nav that you replaced on the Miner 2049er pages, and I think it rocks. Great job! I'm always greatful for your contributions to the pages that I've worked on, as you always help make the pages much more organized. Just wanted to let you know that I appreocate your work. Take care. Monster World mistake[edit]

Hi Garrett. Sorry about my mistake, thanks for the correction. Procyon 19:07, 7 September 2006 (CDT)

Re: Special:Unusedimages[edit]

Kernigh writes: I took a look at the situation with the "unused" NetHack images. I had originally uploaded more NetHack images then I needed, so in NetHack/Beginning I only used some of the images. I linked the others with [[:Image: and MediaWiki was not counting those as links. So I removed the links.

All of the NetHack Special:Unusedimages from Kernigh can be deleted; I will not bother to mark them. If I actually need one later, I will just upload it again. I would also like to see someone delete Template:NetHack that is already marked. --Kernigh 18:39, 16 September 2006 (CDT)

Original LoZ[edit]

Hi Garrett. I noticed all of the hard work you've been doing to the whole LoZ series in general, so I wanted to invite you to peruse the original game and see if there was anything that you thought could use some reorganization or general cleaning up. I've always been interested in feedback on the guide since I finished contributing to it. Thanks very much! Procyon 11:06, 18 September 2006 (CDT)

America's Army[edit]

Why did you upload all those random title images from Wikibooks? We don't use title images, and they're poorly-made anyway. --DrBob (Talk) 01:13, 19 September 2006 (CDT)

All Game Nav[edit]

Just curious as to why you put the _'s in All Game Nav (as All_Game_Nav)? -- Prod 00:36, 4 October 2006 (CDT)

Inaccurate revisions.[edit]

Garrett, I'll start out by admitting that I am being extremely sensitive about this subject, but a lot of the revisions that you've been doing appear to me as being a blanket action taken without thought or consideration. The Pinball nav thing, I can understand, but the Samurai Shodown/Samurai Shodown! redirect is inexcusable. If you had just taken a few moments to look at the infoboxes or the categories, you would have seen that they are distinct games. Furthermore, if you had looked at the history, DrBob made the same mistake previously, and I made that very correction once before. Please do some research before taking a similar course of action next time. Thank you. Procyon 16:04, 10 October 2006 (CDT)

Street Fighter II Nav[edit]

Oh and I was meaning to ask you about the Street Fighter versions. I used Street Fighter II as the nav of its variants so that they could share the TOC and walkthrough of whatever info isn't in the move lists. Is this the best way to handle them? GarrettTalk 19:40, 10 October 2006 (CDT)

Oh wow, that's actually an excellent consideration that I hadn't thought of. Unfortunately though, now that I've switched to using the Fighting Game Nav and the Move List Nav, I would regret losing that functionality that links the two pages together. Alternatively, though I am loathe to borrow anything from WikiKnowledge, perhaps we could adopt their Street Fighter II navigation system. Look at the bottom of this page to see what I mean. As another alternative, we are making use of the Street Fighter category. Procyon 19:44, 10 October 2006 (CDT)
Responded to you on my talk page.  :) Procyon 20:15, 10 October 2006 (CDT)
Hi Garrett. I've gone ahead and merged the functionality of those two templates, so only Template:Fighting Game Nav remains. So any change that you would like to make only needs to be made on that template. While I understand what you mean by parent, I don't exactly understand how you intend to use it, so for the time being, I have not added it to any page. When you are ready, I would be happy to add the variable at that time so just let me know. Thanks. Procyon 21:29, 10 October 2006 (CDT)

One page all game nav[edit]

I've seen your quite well made onepage variable for all game nav and it does the job well for those guides. But it seems like a box, and the title again (when it is just above there) is unnecessary if there isn't going to be anything else in the guide. There must be something that could be in those guides' all game nav, a bottom of page link? It seems like making a box to only hold a tiny (although very useful) image and text that is a replication seems unnecessary. You get where I'm coming from? -- Mason11987 (Talk - Contributions) 18:40, 12 October 2006 (CDT)

How about links to the important sections within the page? -- Prod 18:47, 12 October 2006 (CDT)
That's certainly a possibility. What I've done for compilations (e.g. Nintendo Puzzle Collection) is to link the included games via custom=. GarrettTalk 18:49, 12 October 2006 (CDT)
*cough* I made the onepage var ^_^ I'm just messing around. I'm having a hard time understanding why just the title is such a bad thing. I makes it apperant to the reader that, "hey, this is it. Yer lookin' at the whole page, there's nowhere else to go." Just my $0.02 Procyon 19:10, 12 October 2006 (CDT)
My apoligies :). That is also a good point. I suppose if there is something especially useful to link from (on that page) then it can be in all game nav, but no real need to have a set thing to go in there, we always have the custom variable to add things to specific guides. -- Mason11987 (Talk - Contributions) 09:34, 13 October 2006 (CDT)
Actually, after looking at all of the changes, I do have one gripe. Clicking on a link within the AGN usually takes you to a page that is within the guide that you clicked from. Take the Mega Man Collection for example. Now if you click on X2 for example, you are leaving MMC, without any real awareness that you might be doing so... I know that's a small problem in the grand scheme of things, I'm just not certain that this "We MUST apply the AGN universally" absolute philosophy is the right way to go. Procyon 19:14, 12 October 2006 (CDT)
Well IF those pages that it leads to are directly useful as guides or instruction for the game where it game from (such as guides for specific games when you are looking at compilation games) then I see it as quite good navigation. -- Mason11987 (Talk - Contributions) 09:34, 13 October 2006 (CDT)

My wiki[edit]

Im so sick of you using my wiki as a free-content-for-your-wiki service. Please at least credit my wiki for their work if you want to use content. Your welcome to use the Wikibooks version if you want, as that won't bother me, but I know that you used my version because my edits to my own wiki was in the history. By the way, the GFDL says that you have to credit the wiki in order to satisfy the GFDL. Minun 06:00, 14 October 2006 (CDT)

To Garret - I'm curious, if we import/export (thereby listing editors of the page) are we obligated to state where it came from on a talk page? If we are, I don't see any harm in doing so with the pages we import/export (that are under GFDL), but otherwise this is legit. -- Mason11987 (Talk - Contributions) 11:09, 14 October 2006 (CDT)

Category:Pages now merged into other pages[edit]

From User talk:DrBob#Category:Pages now merged into other pages. -- Prod 16:54, 17 October 2006 (CDT)

But can we delete the old page? For the pages I have currently put there, the attribution is pointless since the other contributor already did tons in the main page so his name is already there. -- Prod 21:07, 17 October 2006 (CDT)
Hmm, I seem to have cut myself off in mid sentence, so not sure if I got the proper point across. If there were 100+ contributions to two separate page (say pageA and pageB) before the merge (both into pageA) with very little contributor overlap, would we be able to delete the page that was lost (pageB). Technically we have the transparent copy, but we lose the contributors. -- Prod 21:45, 17 October 2006 (CDT)

Shadowrun (SNES)[edit]

I would suggest either moving that to Shadowrun (Super NES) or Shadowrun (Super Nintendo). For the same of consistency with the console names. I guess this goes along with StrategyWiki:Community Issues#Category renaming. -- Prod (Talk) 19:01, 26 October 2006 (CDT)

Unreleased games[edit]

Why did you remove it from the games category? I've reverted, because I feel that unreleased games have no better place to be than categorised under games. --DrBob (Talk) 01:05, 29 October 2006 (CST)

PangYa[edit]

As I'm not sure whether you brought it over or not (importing doesn't leave history), I'll just suggest that WP:Characters and Caddies in PangYa should be brought over as well. -- Prod (Talk) 21:53, 1 November 2006 (CST)

WTF?[edit]

I'm gonna start out by saying that as much as I don't want to sound like a dick right now, I'm going to sound like a dick. And that's a personality flaw that I wrestle with every day, but not today.
IN WHAT UNIVERSE DID CONTRA EVER APPEAR ON THE SEGA MASTER SYSTEM?
I don't understand why you go out of your way to make certain edits that aren't even factual. You have the ENTIRE INTERNET at your disposal to find information out from, and you choose not to use it. Without even using Google, you have GameFAQs.com, where you can enter the name of any game in and find all of the systems it plays on. You have Moby Games which isn't nearly as good as GameFAQs, but it has screen shots and box art, which you never upload for any of the infoboxes you create, leaving it for everyone else to do. You even have Wikipedia, where the link to Contra even specifies which systems it can be played on, none of which include the Sega Master System.
Seriously, I'm not upset with your work, it's your effort. It takes five seconds to confirm whether what you're writing is accurate or not. You're one of the most talented contributors, but you waste that talent every time you make mistakes like that. It just irks me when people don't take the time to make sure that what they're writing is correct. That's not to say that mistakes are unavoidable, because I make plenty of them myself. But I spend up to half an hour sometimes just researching a game to make sure what I'm writing is correct. You could at least take two minutes. Please do. And sorry for being a dick. Procyon 14:47, 7 November 2006 (CST)

OK, so it was really Koweja that was wrong, but then you end up getting credit for the perpetuation of misinformation. I'm sorry to come down on you like that, seeing as you attempted to follow through on research, albeit incorrectly, but I see things like that, and it gets under my skin for some reason. When I start a page, I hit GameFAQs, Moby Games, Wikipedia, as well as [KLOV and if it's an arcade game, and MAWS if it's emulated in MAME, and a lot of the times, I even go so far as to look up the Japanese name of a game to find more information. So when I recently worked on Super Pac-Man, I also Googled スーパーパックマン to see what else I could find. That's probably more work than most people even want to consider, but it makes me feel better knowing I have every bit of information at my disposal to make sure what I write is correct. Anyway... sorry. Procyon 15:04, 7 November 2006 (CST)

Cat cleanup[edit]

Zelda disambiguation and Joust achievements[edit]

Hi Garrett. I hope you understand why I undid you edit to the Legend of Zelda page. I checked out the series page, and BS The Legend of Zelda was not linked correctly, so I fixed it for you. So if they come to the Legend of Zelda page looking for BS The Legend of Zelda, they should find it under the disambiguation link right at the top of the page. Also, are you planning on filling out the Joust achievements link that you added to the Joust TOC? Just curious. Thanks. Procyon 17:39, 30 January 2007 (CST)

Guides needing boxart[edit]

Damn, that was a bad-ass idea. Great job!

Pokemon edits[edit]

Hi Garrett. I'm afraid of coming off like a control freak, but I have plans for filling those sections out. If you really feel strongly about your edits, I'll leave them, but if it's alright with you, I'll probably end up replacing them. I just don't want to upset you. On the other hand, I really appreciate your post write-up edits. Let me know how you feel. Thanks Procyon 22:48, 8 February 2007 (CST)

Cool man, I'm glad you understand. My plan is to rip through the whole guide one step after the other. That's why I reorganized the TOC in a way that makes more sense to me. So when you see a major edit blasted in (like the one I just completed), that's when I'm done with the foundation, and not only mind edits, but whole-heartedly appreciate them. I know the stuff that I write isn't perfect, or can be reworded sometimes so that it makes more sense. Anyway, I'm taking a break for the night, but expect big things over the weekend. I want this one Pokemon guide to be a model for every other one that we do. Procyon 00:00, 9 February 2007 (CST)

On a similar yet different topic, can I get your comments on Talk:Pokémon Gold, Silver and Crystal. -- Prod (Talk) 00:29, 9 February 2007 (CST)

So... What do you think of the work so far Garrett? Procyon 22:23, 9 February 2007 (CST)

SF2 names[edit]

Regarding your concern over the names for the various SF2s, they are the same. In Japan, the second SF2 is known as Street Fighter 2' (two dash) while in America it was renamed Street Fighter 2: Champion Edition (some people include the dash cuz it's in the title screen, but it's not meant to be incorporated in to the American name). In Japan, the next SF2 is Street Fighter 2' Turbo: Hyper Fighting (two dash turbo). In America, it was simply known as Street Fighter 2 Turbo (this corresponds with the difference between Super SF2 and Super SF2 Turbo). It confusing :( Procyon 22:08, 6 March 2007 (CST)
