Combat[edit]

Valkyrie no Bouken contains 9 different classes of enemies, broken into 20 different species. Some of these varieties occur in a number of different colors and strengths, resulting in 50 unique varieties of enemy. There are ground enemies, air enemies, and larger stationary enemies.

Encounters[edit]

The Valkyrie will encounter enemies on a random basis. However, she will always encounter the same enemy at predetermined locations in the game. In other words, if she encounters Fly Drills at one location, she will always encounter Fly Drills at that location. When enemies appear, the first appear in a puff of smoke. They will appear in four directions all around the Valkyrie (unless a tree, mountain, or the sea would otherwise prevent that enemy from appearing.) At most, only six enemy monsters can appear on the screen at one time. This includes any item drops that were left behind by defeated enemies. If six monsters or items remain on the screen, no new monsters will appear (nor will they be able to shoot fireballs at the Valkyrie.)

Enemy strength[edit]

Nearly every enemy is presented with different colors that represent the enemy's strength. In general, blue is the weakest version, red is a medium version, and black is the strongest. In rare instances, some enemies have a white version that is even stronger than the black version. There are a few enemies, like Black Sandras, Tundras, and Hohorians whose strength cannot be determined by their color since they have only one color pattern. Their strength can only be surmised by fighting them. The same level strength will always occur at their predetermined locations.

Combat victories[edit]

If an enemy is ever pushed off the screen, or scrolled off, the enemy instantly disappears from the game. Even if you push the enemy off the screen with an attack that would kill the enemy, the Valkyrie will not receive experience points for the defeat. A majority of the enemies drop bags of money when they are defeated. These bags will contain 1, 2, 5, or 10 units of money, regardless of the strength of the monster. On rare occasions, the enemy may drop an item that pertains to that particular class of enemy. Larger enemies will always drop an item such as a key.

Enemy attacks[edit]

Most enemies fight against the Valkyrie by making contact with her and damaging her. Only a few enemies can poison the Valkyrie, at which time she will continue to lose HP at a slow rate until she uses an Antidote, sleeps at an inn, or dies. Some enemies, particularly the stronger ones, will throw fireballs at her, but they must have enough HP to continue to do so. An enemy cannot physically attack the Valkyrie and throw fireballs at the same time. If the Valkyrie swings her weapon at the right time, she can cancel the fireball. On occasion, she can even bat it back at her enemies, but this has no effect on them. When the Valkyrie is wearing a helmet, she takes half as much damage as usual from any attack.
