Wagyan[edit]

Wagyan Land sprite Wagyan.png

Throughout the game, you are in control of a green Wagyan who is on a mission to save his fellow Wagyan's from capture by the evil Doctor Devil. He must travel across Wagyan Land to reach Doctor Devil's hideout. To do this, Wagyan must traverse several stages. He must jump and avoid enemies until he reaches certain boss battles. Rather than being about action, these boss battles are battles of wit, as they challenge Wagyan to games like concentration, and a Japanese word game known as shiritori.

The stages he runs through are full of menacing enemies. One touch from any of these threats will instantly end Wagyan's life. To get through these stages, Wagyan has two defenses. He can jump pretty high. He also about the power to release a sonic shout. These shouts produce letters that travel across the screen and stun any enemy that they hit. Stunned enemies cannot harm Wagyan, and he can even use the stunned enemies as platforms until the stun wears off. Wagyan has four levels of shouting.

Power level Japanese Translation Effect
0 ワッ WA Smallest appearance, does not go through enemies.
1 ギャ GYA Slightly bigger, but still does not pass through enemies.
2 ガー GA Bigger and gains the ability to pass through enemies.
3 ギャー GYA Biggest appearance, still capable of passing through enemies.

To increase in power, Wagyan must collect the small green Wagyanizers that appear throughout each stage. They resemble small Wagyans hovering in the air. Each time Wagyan collects one, the power meter at the bottom of the screen gains one square. When you collect a fourth Wagyan, he will suddenly enter invincibility mode. In this mode, he begins to flash, and can crash into any enemy without fear of being harmed. He also moves considerably faster. This effect will only last for a set amount of time before wearing off. Then Wagyan will return to the most basic power level and have to start over.

Boss Battles[edit]

When Wagyan reaches the end of a stage, he will encounter a boss. Each boss challenges Wagyan to one of two games, with the exception of the final boss who requires that both games be played.

Shiritori[edit]

In this game, 24 tiles are displayed, each with a different image. The computer will always go first, picking some tile at random. The tile that the computer picks will be translated into some word, and that word will end with a particular letter. To continue play, you must choose a tile which represents a word which begins with the letter that the computer's word ended with. If you successfully choose a tile, it's the computers turn to select a tile whose word starts with the letter that your tile ended with.

Note that if you are playing the original game, the words are in Japanaese, and the letter which you are choosing must be the last letter of the word if it were spelled out in Hiragana or Katakana. If you are playing the game with the English translation patch, the patch author has altered the code of the game to be compatible with English spellings.

For example: The computer picks the tile for "Eggs". You must choose a tile which starts with S. Bother "Squirrel" and "Socks" would be appropriate. If you choose "Socks," the computer must choose a tile which starts with S, and may end up choosing "Squirrel," leaving you to choose a word which starts with L. You may happen to have "Lizard" or "Ladle" on the screen, which would be legal options.

Note that many tiles have multiple words associated with them. For example, in the English translation patch, the sun tile can represent "Sun" or "Day". The moon tile can represent "Moon" or "Night". The candle tile can represent "Candle" or "Fire". The sheep tile can represent "Sheep" or "Ewe". There are many others in an effort to make the game a little easier to play. Pay attention to which tiles the computer picks in response to your choices.

Concentration[edit]

In this game, 24 tiles are shown face down. You are given the first chance, and you may choose to turn over two tiles. If the tiles match, you can choose another two tiles until you fail to make a match. If you fail to make a match, the cards are turned back over and the computer goes. It will choose two tiles just as you did, and its turn will end when it fails to make a match.

Be sure to pay attention to, and remember the positions of, any tiles that get turned over in case you are shown the matching tile on another turn. The computer will always remember the position of tiles that have already been shown. You must do the same in an effort to find more matches than the computer, and win the boss battle.
