X-Men 2: Clone Wars is a game released in 1995 by Sega for the Sega Genesis. It is the sequel to X-Men. The game gained attention at its release due to the fact that Magneto, a long-standing enemy of the X-Men, is a playable ally later in the game.
Contrary to long-standing traditions, the game opens without logos or a menu, and instead immediately thrusts the player into battle with a random character. After this single level, the Sega logo and intro scene are displayed as usual, followed by a character selection screen.
The technorganic alien race known as the Phalanx return and are seeking to take control of Earth by assimilating all of its inhabitants. They've also captured and cloned several mutants for experimentation. Only a select group of X-Men (Beast, Gambit, Nightcrawler, Psylocke, Wolverine, and Cyclops) have avoided capture and, temporarily allied with long-standing enemy Magneto, they must defeat the Phalanx before all of humanity is assimilated.
