Defeating a monster adds an entry in the journal. There are five entries, one quest related and four boss summons, that are missable in a single playthrough.

Duren: Defeat him in the Sword Training quest.
Zandabal: First Krell-Emecia boss fight
Polestol: Mustrum boss fight
Mesarabadi: Bami boss fight
Dagbanther: Gadis boss fight

Journal entries carry over in a New Game+. The boss entries can also be obtained from Time Attack, which is unlocked after clearing the game.
