Sun in the south means a location in the northern hemisphere

When a game first starts, the only clues you'll have are what you see in Google street view. Depending on which map is chosen, the location could be anywhere in the world. So how are you supposed to narrow it down?

Geoguessr does not officially cover every country, so knowing which countries are possible choices is a good place to start.

If you can see the sun, you can already narrow it down by half. In the northern hemisphere, the sun rises in the southeast and sets in the southwest. In the southern hemisphere, the sun rises in the northeast and sets in the southwest. Though the direction of the sun depends heavily on the time of day the image was taken, if the sun is far enough toward the south or north, you can deduce which hemisphere you are in.

Meta clues[edit]

Before you even look at the world around you, there may be some clues right under your nose. Different cars were used to document different areas, and even the camera itself can help you narrow down the option.

Camera generation[edit]

There are four generations of Google Street View cameras, and knowing the differences between camera types and the locations they are used in can help you narrow down which country you are in. If you know which generation the current camera uses, you can rule out countries where that generation camera is not used.
