Overview

Mettaton is a robot with a SOUL that appears in the HOTLANDS. He is like Chara, in the sense that they both hate humanity, even if for different reasons. Chara hating humanity for reasons unknown, and Mettaton because it was a part of Alphys's plan.

Appearance

Mettaton 1st Form

In his 1st form, Mettaton is a TV screen with a wheel. That's it. The TV screen has 5×4 grid that he can make different things with on it, but that's just about it.

Mettaton EX

Mettaton EX looks... human (ironic since he hates humans). This form occurs when you flip the switch on Mettaton's back, which is hard enough to get to if the player isn't fast enough. In this form, he has black hair with long fringes, pale "skin" that has metal segments in it for some reason, a pink chest piece, black shoulder pads, and long high heeled boots. The chest piece has a speaker and a knob that kinda act like a gauge. Also, his hair covers his right eye.

Mettaton NEO

Mettaton NEO is just like the EX form, except he is more battle oriented. He has a cannon for an arm, huge spiky wings on his back, huge, dorky pauldrons on his shoulders, and now he wears black high heels. Thankfully, this only appears in Genocide Route (and he dies in one hit), because if this was real, this would be a NIGHTMARE to fight.

Personality

Mettaton is a charismatic, charming, robotic TV host that loves drama. This is shown when he is pitting the player against huge traps that Alphys defuses every time, just to make sure. He can also be very egotistical at times, and very annoying. He never really intends to kill the player, due to it being part of Alphys's plan, he just finds it entertaining.

In the Game

Pacifist Route

He appears after Alphys explains what he "accidentally" did to Mettaton. He goes on to give the player a large amount of puzzles before and during the core. He is seen at the end of the game before Flowey becomes Asriel.

Neutral Route

Same as above. Solve the puzzles, defeat the humanoid robot, you know what to do.

Genocide Route

He dissappears as soon as the player comes to Alphys's lab. He then appears at the end of the core like normal, but as Mettaton NEO. He dies in one hit, however. Wow, how amazing. The great Mettaton NEO, the one who could kill a guy with a single attack... and he dies in one hit.

Essay

During the fight with Mettaton EX, he asks you to write an essay about him. He has a different responses depending on your answer. Here is the list of them.

• That's right. "Legs" is the correct answer! (LEGS)
• How creative. Arms...Most people just think about my legs. (ARMS)
• My hair...yes, I use metal hair gel. (HAIR)
• Yes. My personality is quite charming, isn't it? (PERSONALITY)
• They say I have a voice of a Siren. Awooga!.. (VOICE)
• Dancing? Thank you, I'm self-taught. (DANCE/DANCING)
• What a touching confession! I'll add it to the pile. (I LOVE YOU/I LOVE YOUR)
• Toby? What the hell is that? Sounds...sexy. (TOBY)
• Nice detail. You're right. I do look quite nice. (1 compliment)
• Wonderful! Amazing! A+. I AM completely stunning! (2 compliments)
• Oh, I'm blushing. You're completely right. I AM beautiful in any way. (3 compliments)
• Oh my...I'm speechless...You've completely captured how beautiful I am. (4 compliments)
• Speechless? Who can blame you. (0 characters long)
• Well...that's concise. (1 character long)
• Beautiful. Sometimes the fewest words speak the loudest. (2-12 characters long)
• Nice. You get a gold star. (13-49 characters long)
• Oh my. What a great answer. (50-89 characters long)
• Oooh, you said so much about me. I love how passionate you are...even I though I don't understand what you said... (90-139 characters long)
• Beautiful. Why don't you write a book? (140+ characters long)
• Huh? This essay is supposed to be about me, not about you... (Insult word)
• Oh my! This is a family friendly TV show! Now stand still while I murder you. (Swear word)

All cases except the last two ones will give you more rating points.

Trivia

• If "Metta", "Mett" (case insensitive) or "MTT" is typed for the fallen child's name, the response becomes "OOOOH!!! ARE YOU PROMOTING MY BRAND?".
  • It is impossible to name the player "Mettaton" unless the game is hacked, although the result might be the same as the names above.
• The name "Mettaton" can be interpreted and decoded into various different forms:
  • "Mettaton" is similar in pronunciation and spelling to "Metatron," the highest angel in Judeo-Islamic lore.
    • This could be a reference to Shin Megami Tensei's Metatron specifically, as both have metallic appearances, have similar poses, and are very powerful late-game bosses.
  • The name could also be a combination of "metal" and "automaton."
  • "Mettaton" may be a portmanteau of "Meta" and "ton."
• In his box form, Mettaton's overworld sprite has five squares under the main screen, while his battle sprite only has 4.
• Mettaton has the most songs (14) associated with him.
  • He actually has 15 if the CORE music is counted
