There's the old Attorney's Badge, but what about the bracelet?

The defendant's lobby looks more detailed than the last game doesn't it? Anyway, you will meet your mentor, Kristoph Gavin. He tells you that your client is a friend of his and he had dinner with him that night.

You will then meet the client himself. Kristoph is a great attorney and a friend of the client. But, why did he chose you to defend him? The client wants you to see for yourself. (By the way, does he look awfully familiar to you?)

Trial begins and you enter the courtroom.

Well, at least the old Judge is back, and so is your opponent, Winston Payne. The Judge questions the fact that Kristoph is the best defense in town, not to mention your client's friend, yet your client chose a greenhorn like you. Well, it looks like you have no choice. The Judge calls in the defendant.

Veterans of the Ace Attorney series will be in for an ultimate shocker. The man you are defending right now is none other than Phoenix Wright himself! That's right, the former protagonist of the series! But, now he is not a lawyer anymore, now he is just a piano player... though he can't play it! How did that happen!?

But let's not look into that right now, what you should worry about is giving him the "Not Guilty" verdict. Payne will describe the basic details. Apparently, Phoenix must have killed a customer at Borscht Bowl Club. Payne will present the murder weapon, an empty bottle of grape juice. The Deadly Bottle is added to the Court Record. You can check it out at any time. Kristoph will tell you about the Court Record. Any time in the game, you can either touch the Court Record gauge on the or press the button. You can look at the evidence there. You can learn information by opening up the description.

Payne will describe the victim. His name was Shadi Smith. He is a world traveler. He only came to this country just recently. His connection with Phoenix is unknown though Payne say Phoenix may had a motive: Phoenix was losing a game of poker to Smith, or at least that's what Payne says. Poker? Is that gambling!? Has Phoenix become a criminal!?! Kristoph will object (Ah, the good 'ol "Objection!"), saying poker is just a game, nothing illegal.

The Judge wonders how the game actually works. He will have Phoenix testify about the competition. Here you go, your very first testimony! Listen hard and well!

1. I am a pianist by trade... yet I can hardly play at all.
2. My real job is to take on interested customers over at the poker table.
3. The room where we play and the competition in there are the club's main attractions.
4. The rules are simple: we play a game of poker using two decks of cards.
5. That's all it is... a game. And our customers are happy.

The Competition: Cross-Examination

Press on the 2nd statement, the one where Phoenix mentions his real job. He will say that he played poker for 7 years... And never lost! Quite an amazing feat to say the least.

Press on the 3rd statement. Phoenix says the room he plays in used to be a place for the black market. You know, illegal deals, dark hoodies, peering goons, the works. Now it's all just a play room. Take note about the window, it is a lookout for onlookers.

Press on the 4th statement. The club uses red and blue cards to avoid cheating. Those decks are alternated to keep people from sneaking in cards. There are five cards in each hand. The better hand wins.

After pressing those statements, The Judge thinks he is satisfied of what he heard about a game and now asks about the crime. Phoenix reminds The Judge that they are talking about the game, not the crime, and expected you to object to that. Kristoph will ask Phoenix for his connection to the case at hand. A new statement will be added to his testimony.

• I plead silence regarding the murder. But I will say I never touched the murder weapon.

Time to see if Mr. Wright is right. Open up your Court Records and check the Deadly Bottle's description. It says the bottle has Phoenix's fingerprints all over it. A contradiction! Present the Deadly Bottle to the Court. You will learn from Payne that Phoenix held the bottle upside-down, his reason? To knock someone upside the head!

Uh, oh! It looks like you have just made Phoenix look more like the murderer. Phoenix will again plead silence. Kristoph will then mention that Phoenix was the one who called the police with his cell phone! Why would he do that if he is the real murderer? The reception wasn't good enough, so he had to go upstairs. It looks like he called the authorities rather than running for it! Looks like Phoenix is still a nice guy.

Payne looks certain that Phoenix was in the room when the murder occurred. Perhaps he has a decisive witness? Payne will call in his witness to the stand

After cowering a little, the witness will introduce herself as Olga Orly, a waitress at Borscht Bowl Club. She has brought a camera with her, as she brought has a photo of Phoenix and Smith at the night of the crime! Olga's Photo will be added to the Court Record. So there were three people at the murder scene (The Hydeout), Phoenix, Smith, and Olga. If Phoenix didn't do it, then it could have been perhaps Olga! Olga will testify about the events that happened that night.

1. That night, customer asked me to deal cards for game.
2. It was cold... Both players played with hats on, dah.
3. The victim, he plays whole time with his hand on locket at his neck.
4. Then, last hand is done! But something terrible has happened, dah!
5. That man flew at victim, and is strangling him to death!

Olga will say that the winner of the game was Smith. But Phoenix never loses! Payne will present another crime photo, which shows the outcome of the game. Payne will say that Smith had more chips than Phoenix did. It looks like Phoenix DID lose. The Chip Photo will be added to the Court Record.

That Fateful Night: Cross-Examination

Check Smith's Autopsy Report. It says that Smith died from a blow to the head! Smith didn't die of strangulation! Present it to the court on the 5th statement. Looking at the Crime Photo, it doesn't really show the wound. Payne will then show another crime photo, which shows the hat removed. It looks like he was hit in the head. Crime Photo 2 will be added to the Court Record.

Present Crime Photo 2 on Olga's 3rd statement. Olga says that Smith was wearing a locket, but in the photo, there is no locket. Perhaps someone took it? Maybe Phoenix took it, rather than strangling Smith. Phoenix is called up again. The Judge notes that Phoenix is wearing a locket. Phoenix says that the locker contains the picture of his daughter... Phoenix Wright had a daughter!?! Payne confirms that she IS his daughter!

So both men had lockets? This can't be just a coincidence. The Judge has Olga testify about the outcome of the game.

3. The one who was winning... dah, it was victim!

Serious Competition: Cross-Examination

Press on the 2nd statement. You ask if the chips in the photo are all that were used. Olga jumps upon hearing this. When given the option, Press harder. Olga will say that one type is worth 100 points, the other is worth 1,000. Kristoph will say that what she just said was important. When given the choice, say Add to testimony.

• One kind of chip is worth 100 points, other kind is worth 1,000. Two kinds in all.

Present the Chip Photo on that statement. Each men started with 3,500 points. Add them up, and you will get 7,000. Now count the number of chips. If the big ones were worth 1,000 points and the small ones were worth 100 points, then if you add up the chips, then they all could be worth 10,600 points! They don't add up! You are now asked to explain the contradiction. Say that Both were right. It is just that the values were the other way around. If you add the smaller chip worth 1,000 points each and the big ones worth 100 each, this is what you will get, 7,000! Now that adds up!

Now let's add up the chips Smith and Phoenix had. Though Smith had more chips, he had 2,900 points. Phoenix had less chips yet he had 4,100 points! So, it looks like Phoenix had won the game after all!

So does that mean Phoenix didn't have a motive? Not quite, as Olga will come up with a new one, Phoenix had cheated. Sounds like another testimony is afoot.

Olga's Testimony: The Final Hand

1. The last hand... both men had "full house".
2. There is four of each card in deck, from ace to king.
3. If you look at both men's hands, cheat is more obvious!
4. The next moment, game becomes argument, dah! The defendant's trick was exposed!
5. He took bottle in his hand... Poor Mr. Smith!

For those who don't know what a full house is, it is when a hand holds a pair, and a three of a kind at the same time. A pair is two cards of the same number, while a three of a kind is three cards of the same number. The card photo shows that both men DID have full houses! So does that mean someone did cheat? If Phoenix did cheat on the last hand but lost the hand, why?

The Final Hand: Cross-Examination

Press on statement 3rd. Olga says that Smith had three aces, while Phoenix had two! That makes FIVE aces! This will be added to the testimony.

• Mr. Smith's hand has three aces, and Mr. Wright's two. ...It is five aces in all.

Present the Crime Photo. The Judge wants you to show what contradicts the statement. Present the victim's hand (the one near the bottle). If Olga says there were three aces, then why does the photo show two? Phoenix doesn't have two, so there were four aces on the desk! Olga says she was sure she saw five aces. She looks serious. Kristoph requests that you should examine the cards. When asked whose card you would like to examine, View victim's hand. The Victim's Hand will be added to the Court Record.

You will now begin your first evidence checking of the game. Turn to the back side of the hand. Is one of the cards blue, unlike the other four red ones!? Present the blue-backed card. Seeing this, Olga will inadvertently say that she thought she put it in Wright's hand. She did what!? It looks like Smith had Olga help cheat. The reason, Kristoph says she is a dealer. She tried to help Smith cheat, but did so poorly! You finally come to the conclusion that Olga is the real murderer! Olga faints upon hearing this.

Well it looks like you managed to get our ex-hero off the hook... until Phoenix objects (Don't you just miss that "Objection!"?) He doesn't want the trial to end yet. He reveals that the last game was played by red cards, so the blue one was somehow swapped in. Phoenix wants you to answer when the cards were swapped. Say that the card was swapped After the murder, because you'd be in a world of hurt if you swapped a card and pulled it during the game. It sounds quite ridiculous indeed, as Smith could have been murdered by then! You are now asked who swapped the cards. Smith was already dead by then, so this leaves two possibility, Phoenix or Olga. Say that the one who swapped the cards is someone else.

Phoenix couldn't have swapped it, because he wasn't the one cheating, and Orly couldn't have done it as well, because she made a mistake. This only leaves one conclusion, someone else was in the crime scene that night! Phoenix will mention that the "forth" person had made a mistake. The first is that he didn't count on seeing that there were decks of two different colors. The other is that he might have replaced one of Smith's cards with a King. This probably means Smith did had a fifth ace. This probably means that there really WAS a forth person.

Note Kristoph's opinion on Phoenix's claims.

The Judge will call a recess. He also calls for Kristoph to go to his chambers.

Recess

Kristoph asks Phoenix to leave the defending to you.

You ask Phoenix about the locket he is wearing. He shows you the picture of his daughter. You then ask him if he really did cheat. Phoenix will ask if you know what he did 7 years ago. What happened.

Phoenix reveals to you his secret for going undefeated at poker: your opponent's body language. You can find people fidgeting to get a hint of what they are thinking. This can also happen in court. This even happened recently, Olga rubbed the back of her neck on part of her testimony. But you didn't notice that. Phoenix also reveals to you that he hasn't told the whole truth yet. He wants you to drag it out to the light of day, he wants your "power" to help you do so.

You head back into court.

Court Mode: Part Two

Olga is returned to the stand. She then drops her Russian accent and takes off her coat, revealing herself to be Olga "Quick-Fingers" Orly, a professional card dealer. She actually worked with Smith to set a trap for Phoenix. She would sneak the card into Phoenix's pocket, so when the hands were drawn, Smith would check Phoenix for the card and would expose the undefeated "legend"'s secret and would destroy his winning streak. However, couldn't find it, so Phoenix must have sneaked out of the trap.

What happened to the trap card? Olga will testify about the "trap".

1. That night, I planted the card like I was supposed to.
2. And Wright lost the last hand, just like he was supposed to. Then Smith searched him!
3. But the planted card was gone! The trap failed.
4. The next moment, Wright picked up a bottle and swung it!
5. It wasn't me who hit Smith! It was that no-good, cheating defendant!

The Best Laid Traps: Cross-Examination

Press on the 4th statement. You then felt something odd, like you sensed something. When given the choice, Press harder. You will feel the strange vibe again. Phoenix did tell you that Olga would touch the back of her neck on certain parts of her testimony. Suddenly, your vibes will look closer and focus on that twitch. What's happening? When given the chance, press the Perceive gauge.

You will inform Olga of the twitch. Why is she rubbing the back of her neck when she mentioned the moment of the crime? Perhaps she isn't sure of what she saw. Maybe something in Olga's memory caused the twitch. When asked for proof, Present the Deadly Bottle. She looked like she touched her neck as if she was in pain. Your conclusion? Olga was the one that was hit, not Smith! A new statement will be added.

• He's the one who did it! I didn't let him out of my sight until the cops got there!

Present Wright's Cell Phone. Wasn't Phoenix the one who called the police upstairs? Olga will freak and will confess to what really happened. It wasn't Phoenix who picked up the Bottle and hit Smith, it was Smith who picked up the bottle and hit Olga! It looks like Smith had a good reason, as Olga failed to set a trap to Phoenix!

The Judge asks Kristoph for his comments. Kristoph will say that Olga is, in fact, a "liar" and accuses her to be the murder. Phoenix comes to the stand once more. He reminds Kristoph about the possibility of the "forth" person in the room. Remember, a blue card was sneaked in after the murder. The reason? The forth person thought the finishing cards were colored blue. Phoenix wants you to show who that "forth" person was. Present Kristoph Gavin's Profile. Remember what Kristoph said before the chip photo was shown. He said the cards were blue.

Payne objects, saying that Kristoph had no connection to the case. Phoenix counters it saying they may have met... during the night of the crime! Kristoph will argue that the events before the crime aren't related, but he isn't Phoenix's defense, it is you. You are given the choice, choose to Hear the testimony. You'll have to hear what Phoenix has to say.

Phoenix's Testimony: Appetite Before Murder

- Appetite Before Murder -

1. That evening, Kristoph and I had dinner. We sat at the table in this photograph.
2. Shadi Smith walked in five minutes after Kristoph left.
3. When the "trap" failed, Smith hit the waitress.
4. The girl was knocked out cold, and Smith was uncontrollable. I left to call the police.
5. When I returned, he was dead, blood streaming from a cut on his forehead.
6. That's when I made another phone call... To Defense Attorney Gavin.

Kristoph looks really dim witted right now, it looks like Phoenix has lured him into a trap. He tells you that Phoenix is lying and wants you to expose it. This might not end well for you.

Appetite Before Murder: Cross-Examination

Press on Phoenix's 3rd statement. Phoenix says after the card was put in, Phoenix discovered the card... and put it inside the empty bottle! The murder weapon!? A new statement will be added.

• I discovered the "trap" during the game, and disposed of the card in the bottle.

Examine the Deadly Bottle. Put the cursor on the bottle and press . You will find that there is nothing in it. What? Present the Deadly Bottle on that statement. Phoenix insists that he put the card there.

Now Present Crime Photo 1 on statement 5. How did Phoenix know about the bleeding forehead? Smith's hat was on before the police arrived. Phoenix will admit that he took the hat off and put it back on. His reason, his phone call with Kristoph. Phoenix will show a recording of that call. In Kristoph mentions that someone hit Smith's "bone china pate". Kristoph was referring to Smith's bald forehead. That's when Phoenix went to check Smith, only to find that Kristoph was right, somehow!

So how did Kristoph knew of Smith's forehead, let alone a bald one, if he never met him? You know what this means, a testimony from your mentor! The Judge will call a recess.

Recess

Back in the lobby, you will met a girl, who will give you a card. You draw one, and it looks like an Ace of Spades, and it looks like the fifth card Olga tried to cheat Phoenix with. And look, it has blood on it! The girl will tell you that you have to use this card to win the case. The Bloody Ace will be added to the Court Record. The girl asks you to help her father before she leaves. (Father? She doesn't mean...)

Back in the courtroom, Kristoph takes the stand. He will say that he will "play along". He thinks The Judge's questioning about Smith's head is inordinate. Phoenix objects otherwise, and accompanies you on the defense's desk! Phoenix will say that Smith never took his hat off at the night of the crime, except for one moment, when he was struck dead! Kristoph will then admit that he was lying, for Phoenix's sake. This is it, the truth awaits!

1. The rage I sensed in that man that night troubled me... So I returned to the club.
2. I went down to the basement and peeked in through the little window to the Hydeout.
3. It must have been right after the murder took place.
4. The victim was dead, as he appears in the photo.
5. A bald head, an unconscious girl... and Wright, holding a bottle in his hand.
6. I sensed that was not the best for me to be at the time and so I left.
7. That's when the call came from Wright.

That Fateful Night: Cross-Examination

Press on Kristoph's 5th statement. He mention three people there. What about the forth? Kristoph will ask you a reason why the "forth" person would swap the fifth ace with a blue one. He presumes you have the evidence for it. When given the choice, Show evidence. Then, Present the Bloody Ace. The reason the real killer swapped the card is that if they left it behind, they'd be in big trouble! Kristoph will say that the card you just presented was a fraud. Phoenix will then say that the real killer would claim that it was a fraud.

Phoenix will present the photo. It shows that the blood from the wound is dripping down the back Smith's forehead. Where was it dripping? Maybe the card you just presented. Kristoph will object, saying that the card is baseless conjecture. Phoenix objects otherwise, (watch as he does it, it's like he is stealing back the spotlight) and tell you to imagine out the whole crime.

You will see the floor plans. Or rather, the 3D floor plans. The victim's body was found at his seat, facing the table, with blood dripping out his back of the forehead. Phoenix will then say there is a problem with the scene. The problem regards the blood on the card. He wants you to point it out. You will examine the floor plans. Present the V (where the victim was). If the body where positioned as the photo says, the blood would have dripped on the floor, not on the cards on the table. How could this be? Phoenix will reveal that they were sitting on swivel chairs! Chairs that turn around! Phoenix wants you to turn the victim's chair around on the plans. Use the stylus on the to click on the victim's chair. Once it's red, slide the chair vertically on the chair to turn around. It looks like the chair was facing AWAY from the table when the crime occurred. This means that Smith turned around when the killer sealed his fate. When Phoenix returned, Smith was facing the table as the crime photo show, so the killer turned it back around afterwords!

It looks like this explains the card, but Phoenix will say that this also creates a huge contradiction. When asked to show where the contradiction is, Present the K on the plans. Smith was struck from the front, so if he was facing the direction you have proven, it would've been difficult for the killer to do the deed. Payne objects, saying that it makes no sense since Smith would face the other direction during the middle of the game. Phoenix agrees and wants you to show where the killer would be to kill Smith. Present the spot in front of the killer. Payne objects, saying that the spot was just a solid cupboard. It would be impossible to just stand there. Phoenix will explain the logic to the mystery, the cupboard was wasn't there. Phoenix requests that they would search the Hydeout to move the cupboard. The Judge sends out the investigation team. Phoenix gives the team a note to help with the investigation.

You look at the floor plans once again. Phoenix tells you to move the cupboard. Do so as you did with the chair. Phoenix will point out another contradiction. He, of course, wants you to show it. On the floor plans, Present the 2, where Kristoph was. If the cupboard was moved, then it would cover up the window Kristoph says he saw through! So, if Kristoph saw the scene, but not from the window, where DID he see it?

Just then, Bailiff comes back with shocking news. They moved the cupboard... and found a secret passage behind it! Remember what Phoenix said before, the Hydeout was once a place for criminals, thus have some tricks to go in. It looks like Kristoph had a trick up his sleeve. (Explained below)

Solving the Case

Once again, it seems you have gotten our ex-hero off the hook, but Kristoph isn't willing to give up yet. He accuses Phoenix of presenting illegal evidence. His explanation? The bottle. Phoenix is probably ignoring the bottle and using unrelated evidence to frame someone for murder! He reminds you that Phoenix was holding the bottle upside-down. Kristoph wants you to show why, other than murdering Smith. Present Olga's Photo. Apparently, Phoenix has bottles right next to his chair. Normally, when you pick up bottles on that condition, you would have to pick it up upside-down!

You and Phoenix now explain to the court that Kristoph might have used the bottle and switched it for someone else. Kristoph now asks for proof he switched bottles. Phoenix will now remind you of the note he gave to the investigators. It said to bring all of the bottles from Borscht Bowl Club. You will examine one of those bottles. Turn the bottle to the back and look inside. Is that a card!? Just like you did with the last bottle and Smith's hand, put the cursor on the card and press .

Remember, Phoenix has put the bait card inside the bottle before the murder. This "murder" weapon you have doesn't have the card in it. The reason? Kristoph switched the bottles!

At this point, Kristoph will admit to the crime and will be arrested. He will say that this case was Phoenix's idea of revenge. Revenge of what happened that took his badge away 7 years ago.

Well, it looks like the legendary side of Phoenix Wright hasn't watered down after 7 years. Phoenix will warn you that some changes will appear at the law of the court soon. Hopefully you're prepared.

So without further ado, The Judge hands down his final verdict.

Phoenix Wright is found Not Guilty!

What REALLY Happened

It was the night of the showdown, when world traveler Shadi Smith went to challenge undefeated poker champion Phoenix Wright.

Smith thought he needed help, so he hired professional gambler Olga Orly. She would slip a 5 of hearts card inside one of Phoenix's pockets, so when he wins, Smith would check Phoenix's pockets and expose him as a "cheater", ruining his reputation as an undefeated poker player. That plan would backfire.

Smith finally showed up after Phoenix had dinner with his friend Kristoph Gavin, a defense attorney. Olga took a picture of the men as they talked Smith and Phoenix began the "showdown". The game ended with two men having both houses, with Smith getting an extra ace, making him look like the cheated. During the game, Phoenix noticed the trap card and puts it in his bottle next to him.

Phoenix won the game, so Smith started searching him. However, he couldn't find the "trap" card. Smith then took the bottle and knocked Olga out with it, angered and thinking she failed to carry out the plan. Phoenix goes upstairs to call the police.

Shadi retook his seat while Phoenix was upstairs. Just then, a noise came behind him, as if a cabinet has moved. Smith turned behind on his swivel chair and for some reason saw Kristoph Gavin standing in front of him. Kristoph hold the grape juice bottle he got from upstairs, and hit Smith's head with it, killing him almost instantly. Smith fell back to his seat and blood started dripping down the back his head and on the Ace of Spades.

Kristoph noticed the bloodied ace and takes it with him. He replaces it with one of the blue cards, not aware that the cards were actually red. Kristoph then replaces Phoenix's fingerprinted bottle with the murder weapon, unaware that a card is inside the former. He then turns the body back around, puts the hat back on, not before noticing is bald head first, and leaves.

After Kristoph left, Phoenix came back down and finds the body. Phoenix notices that Smith's hand was changed. He worked here for seven years, so he knew about the secret passage way. Therefore, he pretty much knew what happened. He proceeds to tell Kristoph on his cell phone what happened. Here, Kristoph slipped up and mentioned Smith's "bone china pate", leaving Phoenix to knew he had done it. His suspicions were confirmed when he removed Smith's hat to see the wound. He puts the hat back on and is arrested.

Phoenix planned ahead for court. He asked his daughter to make a fake card for him to use. Phoenix then ask Kristoph for his student, Apollo Justice, to be his defense. Phoenix would use Apollo to help him take on Kristoph and ultimately take him down.

Turnabout Trump: Epilogue

You ask Phoenix a few questions: What was Kristoph's motive (reason) into killing Smith? What was that "power" you had just "discovered"? If the locket Phoenix is wearing really was Smith's (He tells you in this scene) why does he have it, and why was the picture his daughter in it? Phoenix won't say anything, as he wants you to find out for yourself.

Since your mentor is arrested, it look like your out of the job. Phoenix will invite you to work with him. (You know, at the Wright & Co. Law Offices) But he is not an attorney anymore, right? It may have something to do with that "legendary" trial 7 years ago. What verdict was given, and why did Phoenix leave court for that?

Phoenix will then reveal to you one thing though. One piece of evidence you presented today was forged! "A naughty magician's trick" he says. Present the Bloody Ace. His daughter did give this to you, right? Recall what Kristoph said. The card was fraudulent. Phoenix will say it was true. He forged the card! You say something of a hint of 7 years ago. After that, you punch him.

Phoenix will give you the address to his "office" and leaves, saying "I had a good time."

Apollo (that's you) narrates that all of the mysteries you discovered today were all connected to that case 7 years ago. You won't have to look into them right now, as the story of Apollo Justice is only getting started.
