Controls

Galaga '88 control panel.png
  • Joystick: Use the 2-way joystick to direct your ship across the bottom of the screen. This was the only game to run on Namco System 1 hardware and just use a 2-directional joystick.
  • Firing Button: Use this button to make your ship fire shots at the enemies. If it is a "triple ship", it has the power to fire its shots more frequently than when it is a single or double ship.
  • 1 or 2 Player Buttons: Push these buttons to begin a 1 or 2 player game.

Characters

Gyaraga

Gyaraga is the romaji (Japanese) for "Galaga". This is the ship that you, the player, controls.

The protagonist of the game. To the left is how it appears when it starts the game as a single ship, in the centre is how it appears as a double ship, and to the right is how it appears as a "triple fighter", which was created specially for this game. However, the triple ship cannot be captured by the Galagan Commanders and retrieved in turn to create some kind of "quadruple ship".

Warp Capsules

There are two different kinds of warp capsules that can be collected throughout the game; the blue type on the left are left behind by the obstacles that appear on most non-bonus stages when you destroy them, and will make your ship invincible for a very short period of time when collected. Once you have collected two of them, they will create a dimensional rift after you have cleared the next bonus stage - however, they will still continue to be left behind by obstacles after you have reached the fifth dimension. The pink type on the right, however, are left behind by the last enemies remaining on Stages 15, 16, 17, 19, 20, 21, 23, 24 and 25 when you kill them; they will instantly transform whatever kind of ship you currently have into a triple ship with no cost at all to your remaining lives when you collect them. Both types of warp capsules are worth 500 extra points when collected, and will disappear forever if you miss them.
