Story[edit]

Six Months after the defeat of the villainous Maverick leader Sigma, Mega Man X has cornered the remaining Maverick forces in an abandoned robot factory. Having assumed command of the Maverick Hunters following Zero's defeat at the hands of Vile, X has shown remarkable leading prowess.

Upon eliminating a giant Mechanaloid, X discovers that not only have the remaining Mavericks launched a full scale attack on different corners of the world, but a mysterious trio of Mavericks known as the X Hunters have pledged to seek revenge for Sigma's death- by eliminating X himself. Can X defeat the remaining Mavericks and save the day? Or will the X Hunters' secret weapon spell his true demise?

Like the previous Mega Man X title, X must defeat 8 different Mavericks in any order of his choosing, all while picking up Heart Tanks, Sub Tanks, and tracking down Dr. Light capsules. In addition, a secret ending can be unlocked if X is able to defeat all three X Hunters.
