Controls[edit]

  • Neutral dpad: Use the direction pad to control Upa's movement. Press left or right to crawl in either directions. In particular stages, you must dig through your environment. Press the pad in the direction you wish to dig.
  • A button: Press the A button to jump into the air. The longer the button is held down, the higher Upa will jump.
  • B button: Press the B button to shake Upa's magic rattle. This rattle is Upa's primary method of attack. Enemies struck by the rattle will suddenly inflate and float into the sky.
  • Start button: Press Start to begin in a new game, or pause the action mid-game.
  • Select button: Not used.

Upa[edit]

You control baby prince Upa throughout his adventure, in an effort to help him rescue his magical kingdom from the spell that Zai has cast upon the people of the land. Upa is quite remarkable for a baby. He can't yet walk, but he can jump incredibly high. Before Upa's adventure began, he was given a magical rattle from a fairy. This rattle has the ability to inflate just about any enemy that it strikes. Enemies that are struck begin floating upward into the sky. While they float, Upa can jump on them and ride them like platforms to reach higher destinations. Alternatively, Upa can push them in any one of eight directions. Once pushed, they will fly off in that direction at a high speed, damage other enemies, and bounce off any walls that they collide with. Enemies that collide with a wall have the potential to bounce back and strike Upa, causing a unit of damage. Upa starts out each world with only two hearts of health. He can restore damaged hearts by finding bottles of milk. He can also extend his health meter by finding more hearts, up to a maximum of five total hearts. When Upa begins a new world, the meter is reduced to two hearts again. When Upa's health meter is emptied, Upa loses one life. After losing a life, Upa returns to the beginning of the stage he died in, even if he died fighting the stage boss. When Upa loses all of his lives, the game is over. At that point, the player is given the opportunity to continue from the first stage in the latest world.

Items[edit]

Apple Heart
An apple a day won't keep your enemies away, but they will give you a few extra points.
Collecting a heart extends your health meter by one unit, and heal all damage. Your meter can be extended to five hearts maximum. The meter will return to two hearts at the start of each new world.
Bottle Milk
Drink from a bottle of milk to restore one unit of health to your health meter.
Drinking a large jug of milk will completely restore your health meter, erasing any damage you have taken.
Bell 1-up
Magic bells provide Upa with special power for a limited time. They allow him to stand on his feet and run around. All the while, he will be completely invincible, capable of crashing into any enemy. Beware when Upa begins to blink; that means the bell is wearing off.
Collect these 1-ups to earn an extra life and give him another opportunity to save his kingdom.
Hourglass Scorpion block
The hourglass is another magical device that will temporarily freeze all enemies on the screen. Be careful when the hourglass is about to wear off.
The scorpion block is a rare and unique item that only appears in one stage. By pushing the block off a platform and to the ground below, the ground will quake and defeat any enemy present on the screen.
