Woodcutting is a skill that allows you to chop different types of trees spread throughout Runescape. The higher level needed to cut a tree, the better experience. When you cut a tree, you will have logs in your inventory. You can then light the logs with a tinderbox to raise firemaking, fletch them using the member's skill fletching, or you can sell them.

Free players can only cut regular trees, oak trees, willow trees, and yew trees. However, even though there are no maple trees in the free world, members can bring maple logs to free worlds and trade them, as well as burn them.

How to Cut Trees

In order to cut a tree, you need an axe (not to be confused with a battle axe), also known as a hatchet. Axes can either be bought from Bob's Axes (located in Lumbridge) or smithed by players using the smithing skill. However, Bob only sells bronze, iron, and steel axes.

To cut a tree, you need a certain level. For example, you need a woodcutting level of 75 to cut a magic tree. You also need a certain woodcutting level to use a hatchet. For example, you need 41 woodcutting to use a rune hatchet. You also need an attack level to wield a hatchet. For example, you need 40 attack to wield a rune hatchet.

To cut a tree, click on it, and your character will chop it down. The lower your woodcutting level, the slower you will obtain logs. But if you have a high woodcutting level, you will obtain many logs quickly. Once your inventory is full of logs, if you have a tinderbox, you can light them to obtain some firemaking experience, fletch them using the member's skill fletching, or sell them.

Axes

Hatchet Woodcutting Level Needed to Use Attack Level Needed to Wield Notes

Iron Axe 1 1 This axe can be bought from Bob's Axes, located in Lumbridge. It can also be smithed using the smithing skill (level 16 smithing required).
Steel Axe 6 5 This axe can be bought from Bob's Axes, located in Lumbridge. It can also be smithed using the smithing skill (level 31 smithing required).
Black Axe 6 10 Black axes cannot be smithed, but are not rare, as they can be easily obtained on member worlds.
Mithril Axe 21 20 Mithril axes cannot be bought from stores, and can only be bought from players or smithed using the smithing skill (level 51 smithing required).
Adamant Axe 31 30 Adamant axes cannot be bought from stores, and can only be bought from players or smithed using the smithing skill (level 71 smithing required).

Dragon Axe 41 60 These are member's only and are only obtainable by killing Daggonoth Kings, level 302 monsters. It's street value is around 3,000,000 gp. The dragon axe is no better than the rune axe as it chops at exactly the same speed, which has been confirmed by JAGeX. Some players prefer it because the axe comes in handy during unexpected combat while woodcutting.

Random Events

Random events are events that happen at random times. They were introduced to stop autoers, or people who use a program to do their work.

In woodcutting, there quite a few of random events. One of these random events include Tree Spirits, a monster that will randomly appear while woodcutting and will attack you. The level of the spirit depends on your level, but it will always be higher then yours.

Your axe might split, causing your axe head to fly off. You have to find it fast before someone else sees it and grabs it. Once you've found the axe head, use it with your handle to put your axe back together.

A tree can also turn into an ent. You can notice this if the tree you are cutting starts shaking and has an angry face somewhere on it's trunk. It will also have a yellow dot above its icon on the minimap to indicate that it is now a monster. As soon you see the tree shaking, walk away and wait for the tree to transform back into it's original state. If you keep cutting, your axe will break, and you will have to take it to Bob, the owner of Bob's Axes, located in Lumbridge, to get it fixed for a price.

While woodcutting, a piece of the tree may hit you in the head. A person named "Dr. Ford" will appear and ask you how you are feeling. He will hold up a certain number of fingers and you have to tell him how many he is holding up. If you answer correctly, you will be given a fruit. If you answer incorrectly, you will be teleported somewhere, most likely the Monastery, located northeast of Falador and west of Edgeville.

If you're a member, a nest may fall out of the tree you are cutting. Pick up the nest and search it. You will be given a random item, such as a gem, jewellery, some gp, or even a tree seed that you can use for farming. If you your herblore level is 81, use the nest with a pestle and mortar to crush it and make a Saradomin Brew. If your herblore level isn't 81, you may do as you please to the nest.

Earning Money

Cutting logs may seem boring, but it is a very profitable skill. If you wish to sell your logs instead of burning them, you should only sell willow logs and up. Normal logs and Oak logs won't get you much money.

Selling your logs to a general store is not recommended, as they give you small prices. Sell your logs to other players, expecially members. Because of fletching, members need logs to fletch bows.

Most logs have a street price. These street prices are:

  • Willow logs: 30 gp each.
  • Maple logs: 100 to 200 gp each.
  • Yew logs: 250 to 300 gp each.
  • Magic logs: 800 to 1000 gp each.

It is important to remember that magic logs are member's only. It is also important to note that prices change over time.

Yews are the best logs to sell, as there is a large demand for these logs. Yews are usually sold for 300 gp each. However, it is recommended that you cut yews at level 75 woodcutting, because at this level, you obtain yews faster. Magic trees are not recommended to sell, as they take time to cut. Willows are also good logs to sell. The best place to sell logs is in or around Draynor Village's bank.

Canoes

On the Lum River, members can also cut down canoe trees to carve canoes, using the woodcutting skill. The different canoes range in neseccary level from 12 (a log) to 57 (a waka canoe). The canoes are: Log, Dugout, Stable Dugout, and Waka
