Pokémon Dream Radar plays like a standard AR shooter. Over time, the game automatically accumulates "Dream Clouds." Dream Clouds can also be restored using Play Coins, which are collected using the 3DS's pedometer. Players can then enter a shooting mode where they shoot the clouds, aiming by physically moving the 3DS system, in order to collect the energy inside. Sometimes, a cloud will contain an item or a Pokemon. Shooting these clouds opens a minigame, in which players have a limited time to chase down a ball of light and keep on shooting it until a bar is filled.

The energy collected can be used to upgrade the player's equipment and purchase in-game items to help capture Pokemon. Meanwhile, the Pokemon and items collected can be transferred to a copy of Pokemon Black or White 2 on the system.
