The Young Ones/Walkthrough

You shall first have to connect your Sinclair ZX Spectrum, Amstrad CPC or Commodore 64 and cassette recorder to your television, then switch all three of them on; you shall now have to place the cassette of Orpheus's 1985 adventure game The Young Ones into the recorder, rewind it (unless this is your first time playing), type LOAD "" (without leaving a space between the quotation marks), and press  Enter  to load the program into the console. You will then have to press either  1  to select Mike,  2  to select Vyvyan,  3  to select Neil or  4  to select Rick (after you have pressed your desired student's number, the respective student shall animate) - and if you wish, you can now press  6  or  7  to select Cursor or Kempston joystick control if connected (however, the CPC and C64 versions do not support Cursor joystick control, so Kempston joystick control is selected by pressing  6  for those versions, and you can also press  5  in all three versions to switch back to keyboard control if you wish). You will then have to press  0  ( Enter  in the CPC and C64 versions) or the stick's button to start the game; all four students will then appear (Rick and Neil in the top half, Mike and Vyvyan in the bottom one).

Mike shall now say "MIKE THECOOLPERSON WANTS TO PICK UP THE BOMB" (if you selected him, you will have to select "ACTION" from the menu, then "BOMB", then "PICK UP" to make him pick it up) as Neil walks into Vyvyan's room (if you selected him, you'll have to select "WALK" from the menu, then "VYV'S BEDROOM"), Vyvyan opens the door to the garden (if you selected him, you shall have to select "WALK" from the menu, then "GARDEN") and Mike follows him (if you selected him, you'll have to select "WALK" from the menu, then "GARDEN"); Neil shall then state "IF I DON'T PICK UP THE CHAINSAW, I DON'T THINK ANYONE ELSE WILL", and pick up the chainsaw (if you selected him, you'll have to select "ACTION" from the menu, then "CHAINSAW", then "PICK UP" to make him pick it up), as Vyvyan walks to the hall (if you selected him, you shall have to select "WALK" from the menu, then "HALL") and Neil walks back out onto the landing (if you selected him, you'll have to select "WALK" from the menu, then "LANDING"). Neil will then say "OH MAN, I REALLY DO WANT TO PICK UP THE 10 POUND NOTE" and pick it up (if you selected him, you will have to select "ACTION" from the menu, then "£10 NOTE", then "PICK UP" to make him pick it up) as Rick walks out of the bathroom (if you didn't select him), Vyvyan walks up the stairs to the landing (saying "DO WE HAVE TO GO THAT WAY?" before he does it and "THAT UTTER BASTARD MIKE HAS PICKED UP THE BOMB" after, and if you selected him, you shall have to select "WALK" from the menu, then "LANDING") - and Mike will then open the door to the hall (if you selected him, you shall have to select "WALK" from the menu, then "HALL"). Neil will then walk back into Vyvyan's room (if you did not select him) as Mike walks into the cellar (if you selected him you shall have to select "WALK" from the menu, then "CELLAR") and Rick walks into Neil's room (if you selected him, you'll have to select "WALK" from the menu, then "NEIL'S BEDROOM") and Neil walks back out of Vyvyan's room again (if you did not select him); Mike shall now say "THIS MAY NOT HELP THINGS, BUT I'M GOING TO PICK UP THE AXE" (if you selected him you will have to select "ACTION" from the menu, then "AXE", then "PICK UP" to make him pick it up) as Vyvyan follows Rick into Neil's room (if you selected him you shall have to select "WALK" from the menu, then "NEIL'S BEDROOM") and picks up his bin-liner (if you selected him, you must select "ACTION" from the menu, then "BIN LINER", then "PICK UP" to make him pick it up), Mike walks into the broom cupboard (it's called "Below Stairs" by the game) and says "NOBODY MOVE TILL I PICK UP THE SUITCASE" (if you'd selected him you'll have to select "ACTION" from the menu, then "SUITCASE", then "PICK UP" to make him pick it up), Rick walks out of his own bedroom (if you didn't select him), Mike picks up the hoover (if you selected him, you'll have to select "ACTION" from the menu, then "HOOVER", then "PICK UP" to pick it up), and says "THIS MAY NOT HELP THINGS, BUT I'M GOING TO SWITCH ON THE HOOVER" (if you'd selected him, you'll have to select "ACTION" from the menu, then "HOOVER", then "SWITCH ON" to make him switch it on). Mike shall now walk back out into the hall (if you'd selected him, you shall have to select "WALK" from the menu, then "HALL"), look in the wardrobe, and say "BUT THIS IS ONLY A WARDROBE" (if you selected him, you shall have to select "WALK" from the menu, then "NARNIA") - and this is a reference to a scene in the 1982 episode "Flood", when Vyvyan hid in the wardrobe while playing hide-and-seek and ended up in Narnia (from the book by CS Lewis, 1898-1963).

Vyvyan will now walk back out of Neil's room onto the landing (if you selected him, you will have to select "WALK" from the menu, then "LANDING") as Neil walks out of Rick's room and says "OH HEAVY, HEAVY, RICK HAS PICKED UP THE GIRLY DRESS" (if you didn't select him), Mike walks up the stairs to the landing (if you did not select him you'll have to select "WALK" from the menu, then "LANDING") and says "THIS MAY NOT HELP THINGS, BUT I'M GOING TO PUT DOWN THE AXE" (if you selected him, you shall have to select "ACTION" from the menu, then "AXE", then "PUT DOWN", to make him put it down), then "MIKE THECOOLPERSON WANTS TO SWITCH ON THE HOOVER" (if you'd selected him you'll have to repeat what you did to make him switch it on the first time); Vyvyan will then walk into his own room (if you selected him, you will have to select "WALK" from the menu, then "VYV'S ROOM"), as Neil (who will have walked down the stairs to the hall if you didn't select him, but if you did, you'll have to select "WALK" from the menu, then "HALL") says "OH MAN, I REALLY DO WANT TO PICK UP THE ADDRESS BOOK" and picks up the address book (if you've selected him, you shall have to select "ACTION" from the menu, then "ADDRESS BOOK", then "PICK UP", to make him pick it up). Vyvyan will then pick up the dissection kit (if you selected him, you shall have to select "ACTION" from the menu, then "DISSECTION KIT", then "PICK UP" to make him pick it up) as Neil says "IF I DON'T PICK UP THE HANDBOOK, I DON'T THINK ANYONE ELSE WILL", and picks up the handbook (if you selected him, you will have to select "ACTION" from the menu, then "HANDBOOK", then "PICK UP" to make him pick it up), then "IF I DON'T PUT DOWN THE £10 NOTE, I DON'T THINK ANYONE ELSE WILL" (if you selected him, you shall have to select "ACTION" from the menu, then "£10 NOTE", then "PUT DOWN", to make him put it down). Vyvyan will now open the dissection kit (if you selected him, you'll have to select "ACTION" from the menu, then "DISSECTION KIT", then "OPEN", to make him open it) to reveal a hand and a penknife, as Neil walks into the living room (if you selected him, you will have to select "WALK" from the menu, then "LIVING ROOM"), and says "OH MAN, I REALLY DO WANT TO PICK UP THE CRACKER" (if you selected him, you will have to select "ACTION" from the menu, then "CRACKER", then "PICK UP", to make him pick it up), Mike walks into Vyvyan's room (if you picked him, you'll have to select "WALK" from the menu, then "VYV'S ROOM") and picks up the sledgehammer (if you selected him you'll have to select "ACTION" from the menu, then "SLEDGE HAMMER", then "PICK UP" to make him pick it up), and Vyvyan picks up the hand and penknife (if you'd selected him, you will have to select "ACTION" from the menu twice, then "HAND" the first time and "PENKNIFE" the second time, then "PICK UP" to make him pick them up) - and Neil will now say "I DON'T LIKE TO GET HEAVY, BUT I REALLY OUGHT TO OPEN THE CRACKER" and open it (if you had selected him, you'll have to select "ACTION" from the menu, then "CRACKER", then "OPEN" to make him open it), walk into the kitchen (if you picked him, you will have to select "WALK" from the menu, then "KITCHEN"), say "IF I DON'T OPEN THE SINK, I DON'T THINK ANYONE ELSE WILL" and open it (if you picked him you have to select "ACTION" from the menu, then "SINK", then "OPEN" to make him open it). Mike will now walk back out of Vyvyan's room onto the landing (if you selected him you shall have to select "WALK" from the menu, then "LANDING"), as Rick (who will have walked down the stairs to the hall, if you did not select him) says "PUT DOWN THE GIRLY DRESS? THAT WOULD BE A PRETTY ANARCHIC THING TO DO!" (if you had selected him, and selected "ACTION", "GIRLY DRESS", and "PICK UP" from the menu to make him pick it up while he was in his room, you shall have to select "ACTION" from the menu, then "GIRLY DRESS" and "PUT DOWN" to make him put it down); this is a reference to a scene in the 1984 episode "Nasty" (when Rick boarded up Neil's room while he was bathing, so on seeing, he went into Rick's room and put on a dress he found there).

Neil will then say "HEY GUYS, I THINK I'M GOING TO CLOSE THE CUPBOARD" and close it (if you picked him, and picked "ACTION", "CUPBOARD", and "OPEN" from the menu to make him open it, you will have to select "ACTION" from the menu, then "CUPBOARD", and "CLOSE" to make him close it) and walk out to the garden (if you selected him you must select "WALK" from the menu, then "GARDEN"); Rick will then pick up the video recorder (if you selected him, you must select "ACTION" from the menu, then "VIDEO RECORDER", then "PICK UP", to make him pick it up), then say "ANARCHY RULES! I'M GOING TO OPEN THE VIDEO RECORDER", and open it (if you selected him, you'll have to select "ACTION" from the menu, then "VIDEO RECORDER", then "OPEN" to make him open it). Vyvyan will then close the dissection kit (if you picked him, you must select "ACTION" from the menu, then "DISSECTION KIT", then "CLOSE", to make him close it), as Rick walks into the kitchen, states "OPEN THE SINK? THAT WOULD BE A PRETTY ANARCHIC THING TO DO!" and opens it (if you selected him you shall have to select "ACTION" from the menu, then "SINK" and "OPEN" to make him open it in case Neil has not done it already) and Vyvyan opens his bin-liner (if you selected him, you shall have to select "ACTION" from the menu, then "BIN LINER", then "OPEN" to make him open it) revealing some bogies - and Neil will then walk to the cellar (if you selected him, you will have to select "WALK" from the menu, then "CELLAR"), as Rick walks out to the garden (and if you had selected him, you shall have to select "WALK" from the menu, then "GARDEN"), states "OPEN THE GRAVE? THAT WOULD BE A PRETTY ANARCHIC THING TO DO!", and opens it (if you selected him, you shall have to select "ACTION" from the menu, then "GRAVE", then "OPEN" to make him open it). Vyvyan will now put the dissection kit in the bin-liner (if you picked him, you will have to select "ACTION" from the menu, then "DISSECTION KIT", then "PUT DOWN", to make him put it down), as Rick opens the bin (if you selected him, you will have to select "ACTION" from the menu, then "BIN", then "OPEN", in order to make him open it), and says "ANARCHY RULES! I'M GOING TO PICK UP THIS BOTTLE TOP" (if you selected him you will have to select "ACTION" from the menu, then "BOTTLE TOP", then "PICK UP" to make him pick it up); Neil will now say "I DON'T LIKE TO GET HEAVY, BUT I REALLY OUGHT TO PUT DOWN THE CUP" (if you picked him and selected "ACTION", "CUP" and "PICK UP" from the menu to make him pick it up while he was in Rick's room, you will have to select "ACTION" from the menu, then "CUP" and "PUT DOWN", to make him put it down) and "I DON'T LIKE TO GET HEAVY, BUT I REALLY OUGHT TO PUT DOWN THE HANDBOOK" (if you picked him, you'll have to select "ACTION" from the menu, then "HANDBOOK", then "PUT DOWN" to make him put it down), as Vyvyan closes the bin-liner (if you selected him, you'll have to select "ACTION" from the menu, then "BIN LINER", then "CLOSE", to make him close it). Neil will then walk to the broom cupboard (if you selected him you will have to select "WALK" from the menu, then "BELOW STAIRS"), say "I DON'T LIKE TO GET HEAVY, BUT I REALLY OUGHT TO PICK UP THE RUCKSACK" and pick up the rucksack (if you selected him, you shall have to select "ACTION" from the menu, then "RUCKSACK", then "PICK UP", to make him pick it up) as Rick (who will have walked back into the kitchen if you didn't select him) says "ANARCHY RULES! I'M GOING TO PICK UP THE KETTLE" and picks up the kettle (if you selected him you have to select "ACTION" from the menu, then "KETTLE" and "PICK UP" to make him pick it up). Vyvyan will now walk back out of his room onto the landing (if you selected him, you will have to select "WALK" from the menu, then "LANDING"), as Rick says "I'M GOING TO PUT DOWN THE SO CALLED DIRTY UNDIES" (if you selected him, and selected "ACTION", "DIRTY UNDIES", and "PICK UP" from the menu to make him pick them up, while he was in his room, you shall have to select "ACTION" from the menu then "DIRTY UNDIES", then "PUT DOWN" to make him put them down) - and this is a reference to a scene in the 1984 episode "Bambi" when all four of the students had to go to the local launderette to do their washing after one of Vyvyan's socks had escaped.

Neil will then walk into the hall (if you'd selected him, you shall have to select "WALK" from the menu, then "HALL"), look in the wardrobe (if you selected him, you shall have to select "WALK" from the menu, then "NARNIA") and say "BUT THIS IS ONLY A WARDROBE" for the second time in the game, as Rick walks back out of the kitchen (if you did not select him) and says "LA-DI-DA, MIKE HAS PUT DOWN THE SLEDGE HAMMER" (if you had selected Mike you shall have to select "ACTION" from the menu, then "SLEDGE HAMMER", then "PUT DOWN" to make him put it down); Vyvyan shall now walk back down the stairs to the hall (if you selected him, you shall have to select "WALK" from the menu, then "HALL") as Mike says "THIS MAY NOT HELP THINGS, BUT I'M GOING TO PICK UP THE CASSETTE" (if you'd selected him you'll have to select "ACTION" from the menu, then "CASSETTE", then "PICK UP" to make him pick it up), Neil walks back out to the garden (if you selected him, you'll have to select "WALK" from the menu, then "GARDEN") and Vyvyan follows him (if you selected him, you will have to select "WALK" from the menu, then "GARDEN") as Rick walks out of the living room (if you did not select him) and says "PUT DOWN THE KETTLE? THAT WOULD BE A PRETTY ANARCHIC THING TO DO!" (if you selected him, you will have to select "ACTION" from the menu, then "KETTLE", then "PUT DOWN" to make him put it down) and Mike walks into Vyvyan's room (if you selected him you'll have to select "WALK" from the menu, then "VYV'S BEDROOM"). Neil shall then proceed to say "OH MAN, I REALLY DO WANT TO CLOSE THE WHEELBARROW" (if you selected him, you will have to select "ACTION" from the menu, then "WHEELBARROW", then "CLOSE" to make him close it) as Mike says "STAND CLEAR, MIKEYS GOING TO PICK UP THE SLEDGEHAMMER" (if you'd selected him, you shall have to repeat what you did the first time he picked it up) and walks back out of it onto the landing (if you selected him, you will have to select "WALK" from the menu, then "LANDING") - and Neil shall then state: "I DON'T LIKE TO GET HEAVY, BUT I REALLY OUGHT TO CLOSE THE FLOWER POT" (if you selected him, and selected "ACTION", "FLOWER POT" and "PICK UP" from the menu to make him pick it up while he was in the garden, you will have to select "ACTION" from the menu, then "FLOWER POT", then "CLOSE" to make him close it), and walk into the kitchen (if you'd selected him, you'll have to select "WALK" from the menu, then "KITCHEN") as Mike says "MIKE THECOOLPERSON WANTS TO PUT DOWN THE SLEDGEHAMMER" (if you selected him, you'll have to repeat what you did to make him put it down that first time), and Vyvyan follows Neil into the kitchen (if you selected him, you will have to select "WALK" from the menu, then "KITCHEN"). Mike shall then walk back down the stairs to the hall (if you selected him you'll have to select "WALK" from the menu, then "HALL"), as Neil says: "I DON'T LIKE TO GET HEAVY, BUT I REALLY OUGHT TO SWITCH ON THE CHAINSAW" (if you selected him, you shall have to select "ACTION" from the menu, then "CHAINSAW", then "SWITCH ON", to make him switch it on), then: "HEY GUYS, I THINK I'M GOING TO CLOSE THE FRIDGE" (if you selected him, and selected "ACTION", "CUPBOARD" and "FRIDGE" from the menu to make him open it, you will have to select "ACTION" from the menu, then "FRIDGE", then "CLOSE" to make him close it); Vyvyan will now open the fridge again (if you selected him, you'll have to select "ACTION" from the menu, then "FRIDGE", then "OPEN", to make him open it), revealing a vegeburger, an apple, and some frozen peas. Vyvyan will then close the fridge again (if you selected him, you'll have to select "ACTION" from the menu, then "FRIDGE", then "CLOSE", to make him close it) as Neil (who will have walked up the stairs to the landing by this point if you did not select him) says: "OH MAN, I REALLY DO WANT TO PUT DOWN THE SEED PACKET" (if you'd selected him, and selected "ACTION", "SEED PACKET", and "PICK UP" from the menu, to make him pick it up, while he was in Rick's room, you shall have to select "ACTION" from the menu, then "SEED PACKET", then "PUT DOWN", to make him put it down) - and this is a reference to the 1984 episode "Sick" (when Neil's parents came around and criticised the students for not being more like The Good Life).
