Ace Attorney, known in Japan as Gyakuten Saiban (逆転裁判? lit. "Turnabout Trial"), is a series of adventure games in which players assume the role of a defense attorney in a fictional courtroom setting based on the Japanese legal system. Players try to prove their clients "Not Guilty" by using investigation, evidence, and cross-examination.
The first three games in the series, originally released between 2001 and 2004 for the Game Boy Advance in Japan only, was ported to the Nintendo DS for worldwide release. The series has been developed from the ground up starting with the fourth game.
The first three games feature and are sometimes referred to by the eponymous main protagonist, Phoenix Wright. The fourth game, set seven years after the third game ends, has Apollo Justice as a new protagonist while Phoenix takes a support role. Both return as main protagonists in the fifth main game. Miles Edgeworth, a key character from the first trilogy, is featured in two special games set between the third and fourth games.
