The Nintendo 3DS is a handheld console developed by Nintendo, released in March 2011. In June, its first patch was made available, and the Nintendo eShop became its official online store for additional content. Its most notable feature is its ability to produce stereoscopic 3D effects without the need for any special glasses. It succeeds the Nintendo DS series of handhelds. It features backward compatibility with almost all the Nintendo DS's catalog of games, including DSiWare and other DSi-specific software. The Nintendo 3DS was officially unveiled on June 15, 2010 at the Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3).
During a Nintendo Direct broadcast on June 21, 2012, Nintendo announced the existence of the 3DS XL. This was a relatively minor change, increasing the overall size of the system, slightly improving the battery life, and making the screens 90% larger. The system came out July 28, 2012 in Japan and Europe and in August for America and Australia. In Japan and America, this date coincides with the release of New Super Mario Bros. 2.
The Nintendo 2DS has the same features as the 3DS except 3D viewing. It has a slate form factor rather than the clamshell design of the 3DS and the 3DS XL. It was released on October 12, 2013, the same day Pokémon X and Y was released.
