Shin Megami Tensei is a spin-off of the larger Megami Tensei (or MegaTen) series. The series encompasses a number of different media, and originated as a series of novels (Digital Devil Story by Aya Nishitani). To date, the publisher of these titles in Japan and the US has been Atlus (and Atlus USA), except for the Famicom MegaTen games published by Namco.
