Shin Megami Tensei is a spin-off of the larger Megami Tensei (or MegaTen) series. The series encompasses a number of different media, and originated as a series of novels (Digital Devil Story by Aya Nishitani). To date, the publisher of these titles in Japan and the US has been Atlus (and Atlus USA), except for the Famicom MegaTen games published by Namco.

Shin Megami Tensei itself has a number of spin-off series, including Persona, Digital Devil Saga, and Devil Summoner.

Atlus USA has recently announced the upcoming U.S. releases of SMT Devil Summoner 2: Raidou vs. King Abaddon for the PlayStation 2 and SMT:Devil Survivor for the Nintendo DS in May and June of 2009, respectively.
