SBK: Snowboard Kids

Template:Gameguide Template:Infobox CVG SBK: Snowboard Kids, released in Japan as Snowboard Kids Party (スノボキッズパーティー, sunobo kizzu pātī^?), is a snowboarding video game for the Nintendo DS released on November 22 2005 in North America. It is the fourth in the Snowboard Kids series following three previous games released on the Nintendo 64 and the PlayStation. It features a new style of character design and a new adventure. Up to four people can play wirelessly with one game card. The game is generally looked down upon by fans because of radical changes made from previous installments.

Slash possesses natural athletic ability, and he joined a previous snowboarding tournament to show off his skill. He reached the finals with ease, but his overconfidence caused him to lose to Brad. Determined to redeem himself, Slash followed his new rival to this competition.

Brad's family is one of the wealthiest in the United States, and his sibling is Linda, but he didn't pay to learn how to snowboard - he practiced on the mountains in his backyard. He was introduced to Nancy through his parents, and suddenly had a crush on her. Brad enters the tournament to keep an eye on her. His sibling has appeared in three games (Snowboard Kids 1, Snowboard Kids 2 and Snowboard Kids Plus).

Tommy met Nancy at his parents' company picnic and became smitten with her at first sight. Since then, he has made many attempts to win her over, but they all ended in failure. Desperate to convince Nancy of his worth, Tommy enters the tournament. Despite his lack of experience, he'll use every dirty trick or even hurt the others to get Nancy's attention.

Max (Coach)

Hailing from the South Pole, Max (Coach) is a penguin with almost human intelligence. Judging by where he lives, it's no wonder that he became the best snowboarder in the area. Becoming bored, Max (Coach) seized the opportunity to join a human competition in the hopes of finding a suitable rival.

Jack Frost/Black Frost

Jack Frost, mascot of Atlus and well-known demon in the Megami Tensei series, makes an appearance as a hidden character. His reasons for entry are unknown, but it's likely that he's just competing for fun. Black Frost is a more sinister version of Jack Frost with better stats.

Modes of Play

World Tour Challenge

The World Tour Challenge is the basic "story mode" for the game, taking a character through three grades with 12 stages each. To proceed, you must fulfill the requirements for each stage. World Tour Challenge provides a mixture of Exhibition, Slalom, and Boss Battle play.

Slalom

Slalom is an event where you must reach the goal before time runs out. Passing through hoops will increase your time limit, and picking up blue gems will add points. The faster you finish, the more points you will receive.

Boss Battle

This is an event where you have to destroy the robot snowman boss with five hits before it reaches the goal. The boss will drop a series of Walls in your way, and you have 3 Nitros to use if you lag behind. You will earn more points if you defeat the boss quickly.

Exhibition

Exhibition is the regular "race" mode. The goal is to finish at the highest place possible while thwarting your three rivals with Shots and Items, like Snowboard Kids 1. Each character has their own Shots.

Trick Match

Trick Match works much like an Exhibition event, but it is actually a contest to see who can finish the course with the highest amount of points. You can use Shots and Items to mess up your opponents. When you finish higher than last, you will also get bonus points depending on your rank.

Free Ride

Free Ride allows you to run through a course without competition. There are no Shots or Items, and no lap limit.

A burning ball that causes opponents to lose speed and control momentarily.

Ice Needle (Nancy)

• Effect Duration: 7 seconds
• Power Up State: Effect Duration Doubles

A cold projectile that freezes opponents, slowing them to a halt.

Shock Wave (Jam)

• Effect Duration: 3 seconds
• Power Up State: Homing and Speed Improve, Effect Duration Doubles

A sonic blast that confuses opponents and reverses their controls.

Shuriken (Koyuki)

Gives the user a burst of speed.

Nitro

Gives the player a larger boost of speed than the Turbo.

Invisible

• Hyper Mode: Effect Duration Doubles

Renders the user immune to all Shots and most Items.

1000t

• Hyper Mode: Affects 3 Opponents

Drops a huge weight on an opponent from anywhere on the course.

Parachute

• Effect Duration: 7 seconds
• Hyper Mode: Homing and Speed Improve, Effect Duration Doubles

Reduces the speed of an opponent.

Sleep

• Effect Duration: 7 seconds
• Hyper Mode: Affects 3 Opponents

Puts rivals to sleep, disabling their controls. Shout into the microphone to wake up.

Fog

• Effect Duration: 15 seconds
• Hyper Mode: Effect Duration Doubles

Reduces the visibility of an opponent's screen. Blow into the microphone to remove it.

Mine

• Effect Duration: Until Detonated
• Hyper Mode: Wider Detection Range and Larger Explosion

Plants a mine on the course that sends an opponent flying when they run into it.

Wall

• Effect Duration: Until Hit (By Character or Shot)
• Hyper Mode: Appears When Approached

Places an obsctructive wall of ice on the course.

Shop

Hidden Character

• Hidden Character A (Max): 50,000 pt
• Hidden Character B (Jack Frost): 75,000 pt
• Hidden Character C (Black Frost): 200,000 pt

Whenever you encounter a hidden character within each grade of World Tour Mode and defeat them in a race, they will appear in the Shop for purchase. Black Frost appears as Jack Frost's fifth color option after being unlocked.

Character Color

• All Colors: 5,000 pt

These unlock each character's fifth costume color option, with Jack Frost being the only exception.

Shot Type

• Bazooka: 5,000 pt
• Rifle: 100,000 pt

Shot Types add special properties to your characters' Shots, changing their reload time, homing capabilities and speed. The default is "Normal."

Board Type

• Alpine Level 2 Board: 50,000 pt
• Alpine Level 3 Board: 100,000 pt
• All-Round Level 2 Board: 50,000 pt
• All-Round Level 3 Board: 100,000 pt
• Freestyle Level 2 Board: 50,000 pt

Each set adds six new board designs that can be used to change each character's default through the Board Design Setting menu in the Shop.

• Cheat Code Set B (Cheats 4-6): 200,000 pt
  • Cheat 4: Automatic Touch Screen Actions
  • Cheat 5: Character Becomes Tiny
  • Cheat 6: All Characters' Stats Decrease

• Cheat Code Set C (Cheats 7-8): 999,999 pt
  • Cheat 7: Play in Worst Level of Visibility
  • Cheat 8: Player's Shots/Items Disabled, CPU set at S Level.

Purchasing these allows you to modify your game through the menu through the Option screen. Some Cheats will not work in all modes of play.

Trivia

• The characters are, in fact, teens, not kids.
• Their trademark big noses are gone.
• Linda Maltinie doesn’t appear in the game, her brother Brad does.
• A couple of these characters original personality traits from the previous games have changed. One of the biggest changes is Tommy.
