The city emporium[edit]

At the game start, buy one weapon and lots of food. Spend all your money on food.

The castle[edit]

First thing to do when you leave town, explore the surface until you find the castle. If you cannot find the castle quickly, you can do a quick excursion into a dungeon for just a small amount of gold.

Your first quest target is determined by the wisdom score. If you managed to get your wisdom above 33, you will need to have it reverted before you can take on a quest (as the game will malfunction otherwise). If you want to exploit the lizardman stat boost, you can start with a wisdom score of 12 or 13 and get one conversion, in order to start with Balrog as your quest target.

Dungeons[edit]

Dungeon floors are randomly-generated, but they share a basic structure. It is better to explore the same dungeon over and over again, especially if it results in a quick chest pickup.

All dungeon floors share the same base. Walls, doors, and secret passages are added randomly on the white "tiles" above. The first floor has one ladder in the lower-left corner instead of the upper-left one.

The first down ladder is two steps forward, and six steps to the right, assuming there's a path there.

Each dungeon floor is populated by monsters - at most one of each type. They are mostly the same, although tougher monsters tend to be more accurate and do more damage. Three monsters have special abilities. The Thief will randomly steal one object, and the gremlin will steal half of your food. There is also a mimic, which will look like a chest but will attack instead.

When the hero leaves the dungeon after killing some monsters, he will be rewarded with an increase in health points. In fact, HP replace experience points in Akalabeth.

Quests[edit]

The king will charge the hero with the task of killing a series of monsters in dungeons. In order, they are the Thief, Giant Rat, Orc, Viper, Carrion Crawler, Gremlin, Mimic, Daemon and Balrog, although a high wisdom score will start you with a later entry. Killing one monster will advance you to the next monster in queue.

Once the hero defeats the balrog as part of the quest, the king will beknight him. The player can then choose to keep exploring the dungeon and see how deep he can get, or restart the game with a new hero and/or difficulty setting.
