For every RPG game, if you want to survive against a horde of enemies, it's important for both skills and abilities to be put to better use. Things like upgrading strength and health lies within the choice you make as your experience grows. Once you choose what you want to upgrade, you can't take it back but if you do, you better save where you left off so you can do it again and change what you don't like.

Skill points goes up by every level but the stats point stays the same for every three levels starting at level 4. What you need to remember is the skills focus on combat and magic skills while the stats or abilities focus on how your character survives against the odds in terms of attack, defence or the amount of HPs it will hold on to until your character dies.
