Dead Space: Extraction serves as a prequel to the 2008 game Dead Space. It was developed by Visceral Games and published by EA Games in 2009 for the Wii. Extraction is a first-person rail shooter set to introduce new enemies, characters, weapons and environments to the series. Some elements that differentiate it from a standard rail shooter are the inclusion of puzzles and branching pathways, making it more of an adventure game than an arcade-style shooter. Originally a Wii exclusive, Visceral Games later revealed that a version of Extraction featuring Move support will be bundled with the PlayStation 3 Limited Edition of Dead Space 2.
Dead Space: Extraction takes place before the events of Dead Space and during the same time as the animated film Dead Space: Downfall. It revolves around a group of space colonists from the Aegis VII colony fighting against the infection of Necromorphs created when the Red Marker is removed. Necromorphs are the re-animated, mutated corpses of dead humans and serve as the major antagonists of the game. The game also introduces a new female protagonist to the series.
