From Quake II, PC version, the objective of your first visit to the Security Complex is to obtain the Red Key. As you can see, it is guarded by a Gladiator. You can fight him man-to-man or, if you can find a Grenade Launcher, you can kill him from the safety of the pyramid courtyard, to the left of and below this picture.
