This mode is an expanded version of the two-player portion of The Duel from Golden Axe and Golden Axe II.
In single player mode you fight against the four characters (plus the Griffon King) in any order you choose. You also fight the cursed version of yourself (this is the only time a cursed Griffon King can be seen). In two-player mode it's a basic one-on-one. Unlike in The Duel, your health refills between opponents and you can select different stages to fight on.
