Controls[edit]

  • Joystick: Use the 8-way joystick to make your currently-controlled Journey member walk, thrust, or jump (depending on who it is) up, down, left and right; on the bonus round, the joystick must be used to make Herbie, the band's bodyguard, prevent all wild alien "groupoids" from rushing the stage.
  • Firing Button: Once your currently-controlled Journey member has retrieved his instrument, he shall fire at the enemies when you press this button.
  • 1 or 2 Player Buttons: Push these buttons to begin a 1 or 2 player game.

Characters[edit]

Steve Perry[edit]

Born Saturday 22nd January 1949, Perry must avoid swinging gates (which look like pairs of multicoloured, malfunctioning clocks' hands) as he walks down towards his microphone at the bottom of the screen, then blast his way through the now static (but horizontally-moving) gates, back to the Scarab Vehicle for 25 points apiece; the song heard from the two General Instrument AY-3-8910s during his round is Don't Stop Believin'. The Scarab Vehicle is taken from the front cover of the band's album Escape - which was released in 1981 (two years before that of this game).

Neal Schon[edit]

Born Saturday 27th February 1954, the player must use the joystick to make Schon's jetpack thrust (while avoiding all contact with the walls) as he flies down towards his guitar at the bottom of the screen, then blast his way through the now-released beetles back to the Scarab Vehicle for 200 points apiece but they fly after him; the song that is heard from the two General Instrument AY-3-8910s during his round is Chain Reaction.

Steve Smith[edit]

Born Saturday 21st August 1954, the player must push the joystick left and right to make Schon jump from one flying red drum and turn it blue to another as he ascends towards his drum kit at the top of the screen then blast his way through the infinity symbols (eights on their sides) back to the Scarab Vehicle as 50 points apiece; the song that's heard from the two General Instrument AY-3-8910s during his round is Wheel in the Sky.

Ross Valory[edit]

Born Wednesday 2nd February 1949, the player must push the joystick left and right to make Valory jump from one platform as a four-coloured obelisk emerges from it and elevates him to another, as he ascends towards his bass guitar at the top of the screen, then blast his way through the cannons (which are firing off also-destructible long-playing records at him) back to the Scarab Vehicle, for 50 points apiece; the song that is heard from the two General Instrument AY-3-8910s during his round is Keep On Running. Just one of the band's members is yet to be introduced now.

Jonathan Cain[edit]

Born Sunday 26th February 1950, the player must push the joystick right and left, to make Cain walk across the conveyor belts (and up to make him jump over their multicoloured flashing ridges), as he descends towards his piano at the bottom of the screen, then blast his way through the pink spheres back to the Scarab Vehicle (for 50 points apiece); the song heard from the two General Instrument AY-3-8910s during his round is Stone in Love. Once all five band members have retrieved their instruments, the game goes to a bonus round where they begin a concert at the Galactic Stadium, and if you are playing on an actual cabinet, its tape of Separate Ways (Worlds Apart) will start to play - and you must use the joystick to make Herbie Herbert, the band's bodyguard, prevent the wild alien "groupoids" from rushing the stage. Once the inevitable happens, the "groupoids" will steal all the instruments again and the game will repeat at a higher level of difficulty; however, if you are using MAME the tape will not be emulated.
