When you begin each round, every item that you must eat begins behind closed gates, and every card is face down.
You must flip over the cards in order to open the gates. Each card opens a predetermined gate. No more than three cards can be flipped over before Pac-Man must claim at least one of the items inside the gates.
In the early stages, the gates that a particular card opens will be close to that card. In later stages, it is not uncommon for a card to open a gate that is located on the opposite side of the screen from the card. Occasionally, a round will give the player a break by placing the cards right in front of their respective gates.
As soon as a gate is open, Miru (or Chomp Chomp) will start to make her way to the item contained in the gate. If she gets to it before Pac-Man does, she will begin to drag the item back to the ghost pen, moving at half speed.
Miru (or Chomp Chomp) will always pass beneath the ghost pen before heading up and in to the pen.
The two power up items are always found on either side of the ghost pen. Once Pac-Man eats them, he turns blue and slightly larger. Pressing the fire button emits a beam that can stun the ghosts for a short while.
The orange space beneath the ghost pen doesn't have any special properties other than to hide Pac-Man from view, and slow the ghosts down. The ghosts will also slow down in some sections around the outside of the orange area.
