Main Character[edit]

The main character of this game is a soldier assigned to the Red Sprite. In the English language versions of Strange Journey, he is an American, while in the Japanese version, he is Japan's contribution to the Schwarzwelt mission. As with most Shin Megami Tensei protagonists, he is provided with a very minimal backstory, and his personality is shaped by the player through selectable dialogue options peppered throughout the game. His rank, or even what division of the U.S. military he is from are never mentioned in game; he is simply referred to as "Crewman". He is the only playable human character in the game; every other party member is a demon of some sort. As such, he can equip weapons and armor (one sword/knife, one gun, a helmet, body armor, and an accessory), but never learns any special skills, although some weapons (guns, mainly) can duplicate the special skills used by his demon allies.

Commander Gore[edit]

Commander Gore is in charge of the Schwarzwelt mission. His country of origin is never mentioned in-game; the manual simply refers to him as "a military officer from a large country". Crewing the Red Sprite, he is a no-nonsense soldier accustomed to being obeyed. He leads from the front, and is not afraid to get his hands dirty if the mission requires it.

Zelenin[edit]

Russia's contribution to the Schwarzwelt mission, Zelenin knows all of what little there is to know about it. She spearheads the Monitors team on the Elve, which disappears shortly after entering the Schwarzwelt.

Jimenez[edit]

A wise-cracking American soldier assigned to the Blue Jet. He has little respect for authority, but is an expert on the Demonica suits the investigation team will be wearing in the Schwarzelt. His fate, and that of the other crew of the Blue Jet, after the ship goes missing early in the mission is unknown.

Arthur[edit]

The A.I. unit in charge of the Red Sprite's operations. Arthur is an experimental prototype intended to test the viability of artificial intelligence as a commanding officer. It is as cold and logical as one would expect a machine to be, and makes decisions unfettered by petty emotion.
