Cockpit display[edit]

Top Gun NES diagram.png

The game is viewed through the perspective of the cockpit of the F-14 that you pilot. The display provides you with valuable information that you must pay attention to throughout your flight missions.

  • A - Altimeter: This tells you what your plane's current altitude is.
  • B - Air speed indicator: This indicates how fast your plane is flying through the air.
  • C - Fuel meter: This lets you know how much fuel you have remaining in your fuel tank. You will fall out of the sky if your fuel runs out.
  • D - Artificial horizon: Use this to determine how your plane is oriented with respect to the surface below. It indicates whether you are banking left or right, climbing or diving.
  • E - Multi-function monitor: The display in the center of the screen is primarily used as a radar. The radar is capable of showing three levels of distance, based on the operation being performed. It can also show potential enemy lock-ons, refueling attempts, and landing instructions.
  • F - Damage indicator: The bar below the monitor indicates how much damage your plane has taken. Every time you get hit by bullets, bars are removed. If all of the bars disappear, your plane will be destroyed.
  • G - Missile information: The numbers to the right of the monitor indicate how many missiles you have remaining, and which missile type you are currently using.
  • H - Targeting sight: The cross-hairs on the top portion of the screen indicate where your guns will fire, and where a target needs to be in order to lock on to it.
