Endings[edit]

In UNDERTALE, the player can achieve many endings depending on how they interacted with the monsters. In the game, there are eleven endings, plus an unavailable ending that has to be hacked if you want to achieve it.

True Pacifist Ending[edit]

The True Pacifist Ending is the only ending in the game in which all monsters (except one) escape the underground by breaking the barrier. To achieve this, these requirements must be met:

  • The player must have befriended all bosses in the game and initiated (and completed) their individual hangouts.
  • The player must not kill any monster (the only exception being Asgore, who you can't mercy or spare)
  • The player must have visited the True Lab.

In the True Pacifist Route, the credits will show scenes of the monsters you spared on the surface, living their best life. The route will be altered, however, if the Genocide Route is done before the Pacifist Route, so if you just got the game, do the True Pacifist Route first. Don't do genocide.

Neutral Route[edit]

The Neutral Route has many endings. Most of them are if you killed the bosses, or other conditions. Each one starts with Sans calling the player to comment on their game and how well they did. He will not do this if:

  • You killed Papyrus
  • You aborted the Genocide Route in the Hotlands.

Here are the many endings of the Neutral Route.

Family Ending[edit]

The family ending is one of the few endings in the Neutral Route where you don't have to kill. To do this ending, you must have befriended Papyrus and Undyne ONLY, have killed no monsters, and defeated Asgore.

Story[edit]

After the human souls disappeared, so did Asgore. Toriel told the monsters not to lose hope. She became leader in place of Asgore, and treats humans kindly, unlike Asgore. This ending will have a different outcome depending on if you dated Alphys.

  • If you dated Alphys: She will be roped into the call at the end of the route. She says Mettaton is doing fine, and that she will work harder now that Toriel is ruling the underground.
  • If you did NOT date Alphys: Alphys grows more reclusive after the human escapes. Undyne says she can help Alphys, and is trying to. She then goes on to say that many monsters risked a lot to help the human escape, and that the player should be grateful they helped.

Then, after talking to Alphys/Undyne, Sans then asks Toriel if she would like to talk, but Toriel says she is busy. Sans says that Toriel would tie up the line for hours if she knew the player was there and Papyrus says he has "THE MERCY TO SPARE (them) FROM HER." Sans then says that his phone is low on battery and everyone says goodbye.

Betrayed Undyne Ending[edit]

To do this ending, you must have befreinded Papyrus, spared Undyne, and killed monsters before or after meeting and sparing her.

Story[edit]

The first part is just like the Family ending, with Toriel taking over the Underground. Then, Papyrus goes on to say that Toriel disbanded the Royal Guard. He doesn't know what to do in life, but he says he'll find something to do. Then Undyne gets roped into the call.

  • If the player spared Mettaton but did not befriend Undyne: Undyne blames the player for Asgore's death (which it was the player, but she isn't supposed to know that), and makes plans to try and beat the player up. Papyrus then gets on the call and says, " PROBABLY NEVER COME BACK HERE AGAIN" and hangs up.
  • If the player killed Mettaton: Undyne is devastated that Asgore AND Alphys are gone. Alphys may have commited suicide in the True Lab due to losing Mettaton, and Undyne laments and says "Revenge won't bring back anyone."
  • If the player killed monsters after befriending Undyne: Undyne is extremely angry at the player and wants to kill the player. Papyrus says at the end of the call "YEAH, DEFINETLY NEVER COME BACK HERE."

Exiled Queen Ending[edit]

To do this ending, the player must have killed Undyne, Papyrus, or ten or more monsters that were not mini bosses.

Story[edit]

The monsters of the underground are enraged that their friends, Undyne or Papyrus are dead, and they try to overthrow Toriel.

  • If Undyne is alive: She takes leadership of the underground and kills all humans who enter.
  • If Undyne is dead: Toriel goes back to the ruins, leaving the monsters in a hopeless anarchy.

The call then branches off depending on if Papyrus is dead or not.

  • If Papyrus is alive: He moves in with Toriel and tells the player "THINGS ARE BETTER"
  • If Papyrus is dead: Sans is unable to tell Toriel that he is dead. Sans then says at the end of the call "do not come back. you are not welcome here. go to hell."

Undyne Ending[edit]

All you have to do is kill Toriel.

Story[edit]

Undyne, after Toriel dies, is the leader of the underground. She plans to cross the barrier, wage war on humanity, and destroy the player. Whether or not Papyrus is dead or not has little effect on this ending and Mettaton's death has no effect on the dialogue either.

Mettaton Ending[edit]

Kill Toriel AND Undyne.

Story[edit]

Mettaton has become leader, and has brainwashed everyone with his "tv show." Everyone who doesn't worship him disappears... or so they say. Mettaton says to the player that he "wasn't the best to Alphys" and that he hopes the players life after meeting him is "worthwhile."

Papyrus Ending[edit]

Kill all major bosses except Papyrus.

Story[edit]

Papyrus, by process of elimination, is the new king. Sans tells Papyrus that his friends are "on vacation" and that they probably aren't coming back. Papyrus doesn't care if the humans are bad or good, they get puzzles. He wants to hang out with the human again and is trying to break the barrier.

Doge Ending[edit]

Kill all bosses. No mercy. Don't kill anyone else, however.

Story[edit]

A white dog has become president. He doesn't do much, so everyone just kinda... does whatever, despite important people disappearing. Sans thanks the player for this.

Leaderless Ending[edit]

Kill all bosses, and one miniboss in each area (to keep things simple), but no one else.

Story[edit]

Sans says everyone is feeling hopeless, like they will die there in the dark. There is no leader, Sans can't lead ( he's too lazy lol), and their queen and king are gone. If you killed more than the minibosses (at least over 20 monsters), Sans says "go to hell" and hangs up. If you follow my advice and kill one mini boss per area, he says "see ya" instead. Better than him threatening you to go to hell.

Alphys Ending[edit]

Follow the Genocide Route throughout the RUINS, SNOWDIN, and the WATERFALL, but abort it in the HOTLANDS.

Story[edit]

After the monsters were saved by Alphys and the True Lab, the monsters elected Alphys as the leader. Although she is the best leader (to the monsters), she still says this:

"I should've killed you when I could." … Yeah... don't do that, Alphys.

Genocide Route[edit]

This is where you kill everyone. You don't want to kill ONE person, you want to screw EVERYONE up.

Requirements for Genocide Route[edit]

You must exhaust the kill counter in EVERY area (including CORE). There is a certain number of monsters you must encounter and kill in every area. You must kill everyone and then the boss. Here is the list of areas with their kill count and boss.

  • Ruins: 20 (Toriel)
  • Snowdin: 16 (Papyrus)
  • Waterfall: 18 (Undyne the Undying (turns out, she is NOT undying))
  • Hotlands: 20 (none, the final boss of this area is in the core)
  • CORE: 20 (Mettaton NEO)
  • New Home: none (Sans, Asgore, and Flowey)

Ruins[edit]

After Exhausting the Kill Counter[edit]

  • Napstablook does not appear if they are not encountered before the counter is exhausted.
  • Froggit and Vegetoid NPCs do NOT appear.
  • Interacting with the cupboard in Toriel's house prompts, "WHERE ARE THE KNIVES"
  • When checking a mirror it prompts, "It's me, (name)"

After Killing Toriel[edit]

Flowey appears in the next room and sees the player as Chara, the first human.

Snowdin[edit]

Before[edit]

  • When encountering Sans, he is disturbed by the fact the protagonist does not react to his joke. He then attempts to hide them behind the conveniently shaped lamp, but they ignore him. Papyrus runs in, and leaves after Sans tells him he found a human and does not notice the protagonist. Sans then tells the protagonist that they should continue pretending to be a human.
  • The SAVE Points, instead of saying that the protagonist is "filled with determination", now start counting down how many monsters the protagonist has left to kill before the Genocide Route can progress (e.g. "16 left.").
  • Snowdin Forest marks the first instance of overworld music being slowed down in the Genocide Route. Any event that causes the music to speed up doesn't indicate that you have failed. Unless you spare someone you shouldn't. Then you have failed.
  • When Papyrus finally notices the protagonist, he initially does not recognize them as a human. The music slows down and becomes lower pitched when this happens.
  • Doggo shivers when the protagonist approaches him.
  • The protagonist can take three Snowman Pieces from the Snowman until they become a "useless pile of snow."
  • The protagonist ignores all of Papyrus's puzzles, and some of them appear to be solved with Flowey's help.
  • If the protagonist kills Greater Dog and has yet to kill Snowdrake, all the SAVE Points say "That comedian..." until he is killed.
    • If Snowdrake is not killed before the kill counter is exhausted, the SAVE Point text changes to "The comedian got away. Failure." and the Genocide Route is aborted.
      • Sometimes, this will cause the game to crash, similar to naming the human Gaster. The glitch causing the game to crash if Snowdrake hasn't been fought has been patched.

After Meeting Requirements[edit]

  • Everyone in Snowdin evacuates.
    • Monster Kid stays behind for some reason.
  • You can steal from all the shops.
  • Papyrus tries to stop the player from killing people

Waterfall[edit]

Before[edit]

  • Most of the puzzles are already done.
  • The Echo Flowers prompt the message, "It's strangely silent"
  • Onionsan does not appear.
  • Most characters who appear here during the Pacifist Route are gone.
  • You are unable to get the Temmie Armor.
  • If the kill counter is not yet exhausted for Waterfall, a dialogue box appears between the second and third Echo Flowers on the pathway to the bridge, reading "Strongly felt (number) left. Shouldn't proceed yet."

After Meeting Requirements[edit]

  • An additional, unnamed SAVE Point appears in the room before the bridge and disappears after the bridge sequence.
  • On the bridge, Monster Kid approaches the protagonist, saying that Undyne told them the protagonist had done bad things and began to see the truth in her words. They try to fight the protagonist, but when the protagonist retaliates, Undyne jumps in and takes the fatal hit.
    • This causes her to become Undyne the Undying, who is harder to defeat. Turns out, she CAN die, despite her name.

Hotland and Core[edit]

Before (Hotland )[edit]

  • Alphys is absent in her lab. Instead, Mettaton acknowledges the protagonist's malice and flees.
    • The lights are already on.
    • The console that shows the protagonist says "It's me, <Name>." when interacted with.
    • Upon being inspected, the hole in the wall yields the message "It's just here to complete the look."
  • Like Snowdin and Waterfall, most of the puzzles are deactivated
    • Most of the lasers are off. The only exceptions are the first opposing ship puzzle to the left (as soon as the protagonist approaches the laser, it turns off automatically) and the three lasers on the conveyor belt on floor 3 (these lasers are still active even if the puzzle in that room has been solved in the Neutral Route).
    • The puzzles involving shooting the opposing ship are already solved.
  • The Royal Guards are encountered much earlier, at the three steam vents before the entrance to Mettaton's cooking show set, and they attempt to avenge Undyne. They can both be killed in one hit.
  • Mettaton's quiz show, cooking show, news report, and musical performance do not occur.
  • The elevator in Hotland can access every floor from the start. However, floors L1, L2, and R2 are cut off by force fields, preventing the player from getting the Stained Apron and encountering So Sorry.
    • The force field that cuts off elevator L1 disappears after reaching elevator R3
  • Muffet does not show up for her bake sale. It is still possible to buy from the bake sale, but this does not prevent the fight with Muffet. Before she is fought, she does not consider the protagonist to be fit to eat but attempts to dispose of them regardless.

Before (Core)[edit]

  • All of the other NPCs other than Burgerpants are absent.
  • Due to the absences of Bratty and Catty, the protagonist can steal all of their wares, as well as 5G from their shop. A note can be found which reveals that Alphys came to evacuate them to someplace "super duper safe," but that Bratty and Catty wanted to use up their gel pens before leaving.
  • Examining the plants in the MTT Resort reveals that "(The potted plant is judging you for your sins.)"
  • A box appears in the lobby of the MTT Resort.
  • The elevator in the CORE is functional from the start and can be used to bypass the rest of the CORE

After (Both)[edit]

  • The Mettaton encounter at the end of the CORE becomes a face-off against Mettaton NEO. Mettaton dies in a single hit, and the protagonist's LOVE is set to 19 regardless of their LV beforehand. Several events trigger after this occurs:
    • Encounters no longer occur.
    • Upon interacting with the lasers button in the beginning of Hotland, the lasers are not re-activated, and the button just reads: "(Didn't work.)"
    • The lasers in the conveyor belts are deactivated.

New Home[edit]

In this map, no monsters appear and there is a box in front of the house.

  • The box contains the Real Knife. "About time." is displayed when equipping it.
  • The other box in Asgore's house contains the Locket. "Right where it belongs" is displayed when equipping it.
  • Interacting with things cause messages to appear in red.
    • Padlocks, first time, if no keys are used: "(He leaves them in the kitchen and the hallway.)"
    • Padlocks, otherwise: "(There are two keys.)"
    • Padlocks, while unlocking: "(I unlocked the chain.)"
    • Closet: "Our clothes."
    • Left bed: "My bed."
    • Right bed: "His bed."
    • Drawing of a flower: "My drawing."
    • Bookshelves / Asgore's closet: "Nothing useful."
    • Asgore's dresser: "Still has that sweater."
    • Photograph: "..."
    • Refrigerator: No chocolate...
    • Kitchen note: "I've read this already."
    • Journal: "The entries are always the same."
    • Stovetop: "Stovetop."
    • Mirror: "It's me, (Name)."
    • Calendar: "(The date I came here.)"

While walking throughout the house, Flowey talks to the player, telling his story and avoiding the players attempts to attack him. Eventually, Sans will not judge you, but warn you that you will have a bad time, initiating a battle.

  • Sans dodges all of your attacks until the end
  • Sans attacks first, catching most players off guard.
  • His death sets your level to 20.

From here, you can go to Asgore and begin the final sequence or go see one last thing to interact with. In the room with the coffins, interacting with the red one prompts the message, "It's as comfortable as it looks."

Then, go to the throne room and you'll see Asgore. He dies in one hit from Flowey. If your having second thoughts, reset. This is your last chance to do so without consequences. If not, spam random action buttons and Flowey is dead. Then Chara will appear. Here is the exact dialogue:

  • Greetings.
  • I am <Name>.
  • Thank you.
  • Your power awakened me from death.
  • My "human soul"...
  • My "determination"...
  • They were not mine, but YOURS.
  • At first, I was so confused.
  • Our plan had failed, hadn't it?
  • Why was I brought back to life?
  • ...
  • You.
  • With your guidance.
  • I realized the purpose of my reincarnation.
  • Power.
  • Together, we eradicated the enemy and became strong.
  • HP. ATK. DEF. GOLD. EXP. LV.
  • Every time a number increases, that feeling...
  • That's me.
  • "<Name>."
  • Now.
  • Now we have reached the absolute.
  • There is nothing left for us here.
  • Let us erase this pointless world, and move on to the next.

The game will then prompt you to choose ERASE or DO NOT

[Erase]

  • Right. You are a great partner.
  • We'll be together forever, won't we?

[Do Not]

  • No...?
  • Hmmm...
  • How curious.
  • You must have misunderstood.
  • SINCE WHEN WERE YOU THE ONE IN CONTROL?
  • jumpscare*

Chara, after any one of these dialogues, will slash, and infinite looping 9's will appear on screen. The game will then close. After rebooting it, you will see a black screen and hear a weakly howling wind. The only thing you can do is waiting. After you wait for 10 minutes, this dialogue will occur:

  • Interesting.
  • You want to go back.
  • You want to go back to the world you destroyed.
  • It was you who pushed everything to its edge.
  • It was you who led the world to its destruction.
  • But you cannot accept it.
  • You think you are above the consequences.
  • Exactly. (Yes)
  • Then what are you looking for? (No)

(6 seconds later)

  • Perhaps.
  • We can reach a compromise.
  • You still have something I want.
  • Give it to me.
  • And I will bring this world back.

(Yes)

  • Then it's agreed.
  • You will give me your SOUL.

(Yes again)

  • ...
  • Then it's all done.

(No)

  • Then stay here for all eternity.

After you agree to give your soul to Chara, the game closes and after rebooting it works fine. If you refuse to give your soul, you'll have to reboot the game and wait for 10 minutes once more, after which Chara will offer this deal again.

The second time around, the dialogue is different. Here it is:

  • Greetings.
  • I am <Name>.
  • "<Name>."
  • The demon that comes when people call its name.
  • It doesn't matter when.
  • It doesn't matter where.
  • Time after time, I will appear.
  • And, with your help.
  • We will eradicate the enemy and become strong.
  • HP. ATK. DEF. GOLD. EXP. LV.
  • Every time a number increases, that feeling...
  • That's me.
  • "<Name>."
  • ...
  • But.
  • You and I are not the same, are we?
  • This SOUL resonates with a strange feeling.
  • There is a reason you continue to recreate this world.
  • There is a reason you continue to destroy it.
  • You.
  • You are wracked with a perverted sentimentality.
  • Hmm.
  • I cannot understand these feelings anymore.
  • Despite this.
  • I feel obligated to suggest.
  • Should you choose to recreate this world once more.
  • Another path would be better suited.
  • Now, partner.
  • Let us send this world back into the abyss.

[Erase]

  • Right. You are a great partner.
  • We'll be together forever, won't we?

[Do Not]

  • No...?
  • Hmm... This feeling you have.
  • This is what I spoke of.
  • Unfortunately, regarding this...
  • YOU MADE YOUR CHOICE LONG AGO

After this dialogue Chara will destroy the world again and the game will close, but it will reboot normally.

The Pacifist Route will then be altered permanently until you either delete extra data of the game (console) or uninstall and reinstall the game. And this is why we don't do Genocide Route on UNDERTALE. It ruins the Pacifist Ending until you delete all of the game's data. (You think you are above consequences.)

Soulless Pacifist[edit]

This ending occurs only after you complete True Pacifist route after Genocide route. The endings of True Pacifist route will look different in this ending.

  • If you decide to stay with Toriel, Chara will wake up after Toriel left the room. She will look at you with red eyes, then all screen goes black and you will hear an enchanced laugh of Omega Flowey.
  • If you decide to leave, the picture will feature Chara instead of Frisk and all the main characters faces will be crossed out with a red marker.

"The End" label will be spelled in red instead of white and the Annoying Dog will not appear.
