Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door/Shops

From StrategyWiki, the video game walkthrough and strategy guide wiki

Shops are where Mario exchanges coins for items (or in the case of the Lovely Howz, Badges). Mario is also able to sell items to earn coins, store items for later use (up to 32), or withdrawal items. Not every shop sells the same items, nor do they buy items for the same price. By selectively shopping, Mario can plan out deals on needed items, or maximize profits by selling items. Most items that sell the best are thematic to the area, such as cold items on Keelhaul Key or mushrooms and size-increasing items in the Great Tree.

For every purchase, Mario also earns Shop Points, which can reward items every so often. Shop Points carry over from store to store, as well as stored items. After reaching 300, the number drops to 0 and Mario can collect the rewards again in the same order.

Shop Point rewards

A slow, but effective method to grind Shop Points without financial loss is to purchase a lot of Mushrooms from Toad Bros. Bazaar and have Zess T. turn them into Shroom Fry, before selling them back at a neutral price, or, after the Cookbook Cookbook is found, buying a lot of Dried Shrooms from Westside Goods to turn into Shroom Fry, and sold at Toad Bros. Bazaar for a tiny profit in the process. All of these items can generally be purchased (if not found) elsewhere for much less work, however.

Regular Shops[edit]

Toad Bros. Bazaar[edit]

This is the central store of the game, located in Rogueport Plaza.

The store occasionally sells unique items such as the Contact Lens Contact Lens, replacing the Mushroom (GameCube) or Fright Mask (Switch) when they're ready.

They will offer the most coins for Cake Mix Cake Mix (8 coins), Fresh Pasta Fresh Pasta (53 coins), and Keel Mango Keel Mango (4 coins).

Niff T.'s shop[edit]

Located in the center of Petalburg, they will offer the most coins for Koopa Bun Koopa Bun (10 coins), Koopa Tea Koopa Tea (4 coins), and Sleepy Sheep Sleepy Sheep (10 coins). In the Japanese GameCube version only, they also offer the most coins for Koopasta Koopasta (60 coins).

Pungent's Great Tree Shop[edit]

This shop is hidden within the Great Tree, and the entrance is revealed by Madame Flurrie. The shop is located about halfway in the tree in the room connecting the two Jabbi hives.

They will offer the most coins for Life Shroom Life Shrooms (43 coins), Power Punch Power Punches (17 coins), Super Shroom Super Shrooms (14 coins), Fright Mask Fright Masks, and Ultra Shroom Ultra Shrooms (75 coins). On the left side of this room hides Jabble, a young Jabbi who is friends with Punio. If you promise to not hurt him, Jabble will join the rest of the Punies for the duration of the chapter.

Westside Goods[edit]

Westside Goods is located in West Rogueport. Mario must purchase a Dried Shroom and Dizzy Dial in that order specifically in order to meet with Don Pianta. This only must happen once. Westside Goods offers the most coins for no items in the game. It is not advised to sell items here.

Deepdown Depot[edit]

This store is found in the underground city within Rogueport Sewers. They will offer the most coins for Coconut Bomb Coconut Bomb (8 coins), Courage Meal Courage Meal (20 coins), Egg Bomb Egg Bomb (15 coins), Poison Shroom Poison Shroom (25 coins) and Zess Dynamite Zess Dynamite (40 coins).

Glitzville Souvenir Shop[edit]

Twilight Shop[edit]

Twilight Town's shop cannot be accessed until the storeroom is opened. Located in the storeroom is a Jammin' Jelly Jammin' Jelly, a Boo's Sheet Boo's Sheet, and a Life Shroom Life Shroom—as well as a Defend Plus Defend Plus. It features the highest sale prices for Mistake Mistakes, Dried Shroom Dried Shrooms, Stop Watch Stop Watches, and Jelly Ultra Jelly Ultras.

Keelhaul Galleria[edit]

This shop on Keelhaul Key features a lot of the highest sell price items, but also some of the lowest sale price items. Be very selective what you sell here. The maximum payout is for Tasty Tonic Tasty Tonic, Ice Storm Ice Storm, Hot Dog Hot Dog, Snow Bunny Snow Bunny, Icicle Pop Icicle Pop, and Zess Frappe Zess Frappe.

Excess Express Sales Stall[edit]

This shop is still accessible even during the Smorg invasion, but has closed periods late at night. This can help indicate that Mario must rest to progress to the next day. It has the highest sale rate for Coconut Coconut (4 coins), Keel Mango Keel Mango (4), Horsetail Horsetail (5), Turtley Leaf Turtley Leaf (5), Mystic Egg Mystic Egg (6), Golden Leaf Golden Leaf (7), Peachy Peach Peachy Peach (8), Cake Mix Cake Mix (8), Hot Sauce Hot Sauce (15), Dried Bouquet Dried Bouquet (17), and Whacka Bump Whacka Bumps (100).

Making a lot of Spicy Soup with Fire Flowers purchased at Keelhaul Galleria and cooked by Zess T. can be sold for a 15 coin profit, one of the easiest higher margins in the game.

Lovely Howz of Badges[edit]

The Lovely Howz of Badges is located in Rogueport on the second floor of Toad Bros. Bazaar, accessed by going out the door of the Inn. A significant amount of badges are exclusively sold here, as well as a good number of duplicate badges to increase abilities even further. Five badges placed on the counter are on sale for 30% off. A few badges will only appear on the counter. In the GameCube release, more badges can be viewed for purchase at full price by speaking with the extremely-enthusiastic yellow Mouser manager. In the Nintendo Switch version, this is done through a box on the counter instead. A few badges can be added to the rotation as well: If Mario does not collect the Lucky Start Lucky Start badge in Creepy Steeple (such as it falling down the hole), it will be added here. Badges dropped by enemies and then leaving the room before collecting them also get added here. Up to three of the same badge can be held at one time. Badges can also be sold for double their sale price. More badges become available as the game progresses.
