When you enter the cave you find out that there is a magnetic field that makes it impossible to use metallic objects.  You need to equip either Cloth, Leather, or similar items. Iron and Silver Rings should either be removed or replaced by Ruby Rings. If you failed to find the hidden Ancient Sword, near Baron's secret entrance, Cecil will have to equip a bow or staff (or you can just go back for it!).

Not sure how it is in other versions, but in Final Fantasy Chronicles, Cecil can't use the Ancient Sword, as it's metal.
