Completion of a Chapter will unlock new abilities that can be used in battle. In order to use these special moves, Mario needs to have enough Star Power, represented by the gauges and dots at the top of the battle. Each "dot" represents one full point of Star Power. Mario and Partners can gain Star Power by successfully landing attacks in battle, performing Stylish maneuvers, using the Appeal action, successfully guarding attacks, or sleeping at an Inn.

There are mild changes to Star Power based off the composition of the battle's audience. Dull Bones will never give Star Power unless Mario or his Partner Appeals, while Toads grant three times the standard amount. Koopas hiding in their shells do not grant Star Power. Any members that are asleep due to a Crazy Dayzee will not grant Star Power.

All Star Powers ignore evasion, invisibility, and pierce defense (except for special defense such as the Iron Clefts'). Only Mario can use Star Powers in battle.
