The controls in Shadow of the Colossus are fairly basic on paper; however, mastering all the various techniques that can be used will take some diligence.

  • Neutral lstick: Move the Hero; aim with bow (when equipped); move cursor for menu selection
    • The Left Analog stick is also used to steer our horse, Agro. While mounted, it should be noted that the directions remain the same regardless of camera angle (i.e. moving left always stirs Agro left)
  • Neutral rstick: Control camera
  • Cross button: Calls Agro, hold to aim camera at Agro.
    • While mounted, pushing the X button will make Agro run faster, and holding it keeps him at top speed.
  • Square button: Unsheathe/Attack with sword while standing; Attack arrows from bow when equipped.
    • While crouched using R1, pressing Square will charge your sword's strength.
    • Pressing Square again will unlease this power in a violent stab (used for killing Colossi).
  • Triangle button: Jump, either while standing or while mounted on Agro
  • Circle button: Attack with sword; cancel; skip dialog; save (on menu)
  • R1 button: Grab surface. Crouch. You will recover health slowly while crouching.
    • While moving using the Left Analog Stick, R1 allows the hero to walk instead of run.
  • Triangle button+R1 button: Triangle is often used in conjunction with R1; in fact, this combination is vital to your success in the game.
    • Press Triangle + R1 while Running to do a dive roll.
    • When beside Agro, pressing Triangle and then R1 will let you jump on to your trusted steed.
    • Holding R1 in mid-jump (or while falling) will allow you to latch on to any surface that will allow it, i.e. ledges, colossi fur, etc.
  • L1 button: Aim camera at Colossus.
  • L2 button: Keep camera behind the hero.
  • Start button: Pause and bring up the menu

Note: Not a complete list.
