There are several things you can do at this point, wander around in a stupor, throw rocks, or jump across stepping stones. I suggest jumping. To be able to get the 5 rupees from leaping across the platforms, first, enter  building, then jump across them. You can repeat that as many times as is needed.

===Getting the Shield===
After a particularly disturbing dream for our young hero, Link awakens in his home in the Kokiri Forest. A fairy named Navi tells him to go see the Great Deku Tree immediately.
This is the easy part, you only need 40 rupees to purchase the shield. All you really have to do is throw stones and jump across the platforms. Once you have 40 rupees, go on in and purchase your shield.


===The Sword===
If you try to go there, you'll be stopped by another Kokiri named Mido, who tells you that you should first get a sword and shield if you are going to speak to the Deku Tree. You can get either item first, but getting the sword first may help you acquire the 40 rupees necessary to purchase the shield.
Only a little harder, the sword isnt too hard to find. The hole is just past some yellow gaurdrails.
Once inside, there is an opportunity for 5 rupees, walk counter-clockwise past the chest, and there will be a small alcove. You can get that after you get the sword though. Walk up to the chest and snag yourself a sword. After this, cutting weeds wont be a problem. Equip your gear and head on over to Mido, the elf stopping you from seeing the Great Deku Tree.


===To the Deku Tree!===
Once you have the items, Mido will let you pass.
Three monsters lace this road, but it is a short road. Just dispose of the creatures with your new sword, grab your [[Zelda:_Ocarina_of_Time/Item_List#Deku_Nuts| Deku Sticks]] and head on down the path. Time to enter the Great Deku Tree.

The sword also isn't very difficult to find. To reach it, you must first locate a hole in a fenced area up on a hill. Approach the hole and press the A button to begin crawling through it. On the other side, you'll have to dodge a rolling rock by ducking into alcoves when it is rolling toward you. You'll easily locate a chest containing the Kokiri Sword by running to the left, then right from the hole exit.

There are a couple of ways to quickly earn the cash needed to buy the Deku Shield. There is a house with four chests containing rupees.
 
You can also earn rupees by running and jumping across the square platforms in the water near the shop. Jumping across the platforms without falling in the water will earn you 5 rupees. To earn this reward more than once, just enter a building and go back outside.
