There are several things you can do at this point, wander around in a stupor, throw rocks, or jump across stepping stones. I suggest jumping. To be able to get the 5 rupees from leaping across the platforms, first, enter building, then jump across them. You can repeat that as many times as is needed.
Getting the Shield
This is the easy part, you only need 40 rupees to purchase the shield. All you really have to do is throw stones and jump across the platforms. Once you have 40 rupees, go on in and purchase your shield.
The Sword
Only a little harder, the sword isnt too hard to find. The hole is just past some yellow gaurdrails. Once inside, there is an opportunity for 5 rupees, walk counter-clockwise past the chest, and there will be a small alcove. You can get that after you get the sword though. Walk up to the chest and snag yourself a sword. After this, cutting weeds wont be a problem. Equip your gear and head on over to Mido, the elf stopping you from seeing the Great Deku Tree.
To the Deku Tree!
Three monsters lace this road, but it is a short road. Just dispose of the creatures with your new sword, grab your Deku Sticks and head on down the path.
