The game uses a controller for the menu, using {{nes|Select}} for choosing the event and {{nes|Start}} to begin the selected event. To play the events, a Power Pad is required.

The left player will use buttons 1 and 2 on the power pad, or any buttons located behind.  The right player will use buttons 3 and 4, likewise any buttons behind.  To start the event, stand on buttons and wait until the signal starts.

To accelerate the runner, simply alternate between buttons 1 and 2. Although the manual implies the buttons at the back are slower, that's incorrect as all buttons accelerate the runner at the same rate. Additionally, the game is designed for small children, thus one can simply run in place on one of the two buttons.

To jump, release both buttons. For hurdles, continue running after the jump. In the long jump, you need to land on the button before the runner tumbles. For the triple jump, you will need to repeat the process three times, always remembering to land before it's too late, while being careful of an early landing.
