In Cooking Mama, the player is tasked with preparing various meals, including chopping vegetables, slicing meat, flipping food in pans, and arranging items on the plate. The tasks are accomplished through a series of short mini-games. Generally the mini-games are related to the activity represented, such as drawing lines on the screen to chop or slice, or accomplishing particular tasks at precise times. Preparing a particular meal can require anywhere from one to a dozen mini-games to complete.
The Wii games in the series replace using the 
with using the Wii remote to play the mini-games on-screen.
