If you're going to fight plant 42 (as Chris without Rebecca/Jill), you can fight the plant with only a knife! Seems there is a hole in back of the plant on the dorm hall (where you can enter the plant 42 room/dorm 003 room) where it can't hurt/hit you and you're safe to knife it. Simply run up into that hole and you're pretty much safe.
