Cars are placed into classes (even though it doesn't say that in the game) and there are standard editions, NFS editions, and pursuit versions. Except for changing the paint, cars are not customizable. Most of the standard editions have the choice to change the paint, with one of the vehicles also having the choice to add two stripes along the car. NFS editions and pursuit versions cannot have their paint changed. NFS editions have custom paint, painted rims, a faster acceleration, a slightly higher top speed, and cost twice as much. Some of them also have vinyls. The two BMWs are not available as a NFS edition. Pursuit versions are the police versions of the cars. There are 10 police vehicles available in the Gamecube/Xbox/Windows version of the game however there is only 5 police vehicles available in the PS2 version of the game. The pursuit versions cost as much as the NFS editions, which might indicate that the pursuit versions are as fast as the NFS editions. The Showcase option is now only a narrator commenting on the car and shows the manufacturer's performance specs. The performance figures are from the Gamecube version of the game.

Police Vehicles
The police vehicles show same performance statistics as the standard editions and the NFS Editions. When you chase speeders, you can only chase Al drivers that drive the same class of car that you drive with the exception of quotas in the Hot Pursuit tree, where in 2 of the 4 quotas its possible to chase down a Class 5 car with a Class 4 car and to chase down a Class 4 car with a Class 3 car. It is not possible for the player driving as a cop to chase down Class 1 cars because the fastest police car is a Class 2 car although it is possible for Al drivers to chase down Class 1 cars with the fastest Class 2 car.

PlayStation 2 Version
The car list in the PS2 version of the game is different with a lot of the cars being placed into different classes, letters are used instead of numbers for the class names, less police vehicles, one of the NFS edition cars being a different model, and, unlike the other systems, the player when being a cop is allowed to chase the Class 1/Class A cars.
