[[File:DragonQuest4 weapons.png|thumb|Diagram showing relationship between price, attack value and special effects of weapons.]]
Some items can only be found in certain locations or dropped by enemies. Some cast spells when used as an item in battle. Cursed items negatively affect your party and can only be removed by healers in town.
<nowiki>*</nowiki> Item is found in a chest at the specified location<br />
<nowiki>**</nowiki> Item can be traded for {{control|small medals by the Small|mini medals by the Mini}} Medal King.
Selling price is always 75% of purchasing price.
Default sorting is by price. In fact, some weapons with lower attack value can instead cast offensive spells that deal lots of damage anyway (e.g. {{control|Staff of Thunder|Lightning Staff}}), or have special properties that make them valuable (e.g. Staff of {{control|Healing|Salvation}}). The same applies for armors, shields and helms.
Equipment parts that cannot be purchased in shops are listed afterwards, as more rare and valuable, their Price cell is shaded in gray, and price is calculated from the selling price. Equipment parts that cannot even be sold are the rarest and most valuable, they are listed at the end of the tables, and their price is set as zero.
If a character is not controlled by the video game artificial intelligence, he/she has to select the weapon from the "Item" menu to cast its spell. A female hero can use a few "female-only" pieces of armor that a male hero cannot wear.
Characters abbreviations:
* '''H:''' Hero (Solo/Sofia)
* '''S:''' Soldier (Ragnar)
* '''M:''' Merchant ({{control|Taloon|Torneko}})
* '''P:''' Princess (Alena)
* '''C:''' Chancellor ({{control|Cristo|Kiryl}})
* '''F:''' Fortune Teller ({{control|Nara|Meena}})
* '''D:''' Dancer ({{control|Mara|Maya}})
* '''W:''' Wizard ({{control|Brey|Borya}})

Some items can only be found in certain locations or dropped by enemies. Some cast spells when used as an item in battle. Cursed items negatively affect your party and can only be removed by healers in town.
Characters are sorted according to this order in the tables below, for the reasons outlined here:
* Solo/Sofia, Ragnar and {{control|Taloon|Torneko}} (the "warriors") can use similar equipment;
* Alena (the "fighter") can use very limited equipment;
* {{control|Cristo, Nara, Mara and Brey|Kiryl, Meena, Maya and Borya}} (the "spellcasters") can use similar equipment; moreover:
** {{control|Cristo and Nara|Kiryl and Meena}} are both White Mages, and have more equipment in common;
** {{control|Nara and Mara|Meena and Maya}} are both girls, and can both use some female-only equipment;
** {{control|Mara and Brey|Maya and Borya}} are both Black Mages, and have more equipment in common.

<nowiki>*</nowiki> Item is found in a chest at this location<br />
<nowiki>**</nowiki> Item can be traded for small medals by the Small Medal King.

== Weapons ==
== Weapons ==

Weapons are very important for most characters, especially the fighters. In most cases weapons with high attack strength are better but there are certain weapons with special abilities, such as the poison needle, that can be more useful than a higher attack.
Weapons are very important for most characters, especially those who cannot cast spells.

Diagram showing relationship between price, attack value and special effects of weapons.

Some items can only be found in certain locations or dropped by enemies. Some cast spells when used as an item in battle. Cursed items negatively affect your party and can only be removed by healers in town.

* Item is found in a chest at the specified location
** Item can be traded for small medals by the Small Medal King.

Selling price is always 75% of purchasing price.

Default sorting is by price. In fact, some weapons with lower attack value can instead cast offensive spells that deal lots of damage anyway (e.g. Staff of Thunder), or have special properties that make them valuable (e.g. Staff of Healing).

  • H: Hero (Solo/Sofia)
  • S: Soldier (Ragnar)
  • M: Merchant (Taloon)
  • P: Princess (Alena)
  • C: Chancellor (Cristo)
  • F: Fortune Teller (Nara)
  • D: Dancer (Mara)
  • W: Wizard (Brey)

Characters are sorted according to this order in the tables below, for the reasons outlined here:

  • Solo/Sofia, Ragnar and Taloon (the "warriors") can use similar equipment;
  • Alena (the "fighter") can use very limited equipment;
  • Cristo, Nara, Mara and Brey (the "spellcasters") can use similar equipment; moreover:
    • Cristo and Nara are both White Mages, and have more equipment in common;
    • Nara and Mara are both girls, and can both use some female-only equipment;
    • Mara and Brey are both Black Mages, and have more equipment in common.

Weapons are very important for most characters, especially those who cannot cast spells.

Effects of Silver Tarot Cards[edit]

When used as an item, the Silver Tarot Cards have a random effect from the ones listed below. In chapter 5, they can be used only choosing the "Try out" tactic. The numbers (N.) come from official Japanese artwork.

In order to get past the Fool card, you should use the Tarots in a party where as many characters as possible can cast a Revive spell.

N. Tarot NES effect NDS effect
10 Sun Heal: casts Healusall on all party. Heal: restores some health points to all party.
20 Evil/Devil BAD: casts StopSpell on one ally. Disable: casts Kasap on all enemies.
30 Justice Attack: casts Expel on all enemies. Attack: casts Poof on all enemies.
40 Terminator/Death Disable: replaces all enemies with a powerful Necrodain skeleton.
It's always drawn last, after the party has been weakened by the "bad" tarots.
Attack: casts Whack on one enemy.
50 Star Support: doubles experience and gold gained from the battle. Support: doubles experience and gold gained from the battle.
60 Tower BAD: casts Zap on all allies. Attack: casts Zap on all enemies.
70 Perfection/Fool BAD: casts Defeat on all party. BAD: casts Thwack on all party.
80 Strength Support: casts Bi-Kill on one ally. Support: casts Oomph on one ally.
90 Moon Disable: casts Surround on all enemies. Disable: casts Dazzle on all enemies.

Armor[edit]

Armor offers protection from enemy blows. Unlike weapons, armor cannot be used as an item during battle, but some do have special effects like protecting against different types of attacks.

Shields[edit]

Although most early shields provide little defensive strength, by the end of the game you will obtain some very nice shields. Like weapons, certain shields have useful abilities when used in battle.

Helms[edit]

Compared to armors and shields, helms give relatively little defense with three exceptions: the Metal Babble Helm, the Zenithian Helm and the Iron Mask. Since only the Hero and Ragnar can wear the Iron Mask, and only the Hero gets the Zenithian Helm, most of your party members need to settle for weaker helms. In addition, the Metal Babble Helm is rather hard to get, requiring 20 small medals out of a total of 32 medals, so you need to either save up your medals or you can spend them on multiple Hats of Happiness and Swords of Miracles instead.
