P.L.A.T.O. (Programmed Logic for Automatic Teaching Operations) is the oldest local computer network used for educational purposes. The mainframe was active in the university in Illinois (United States) since the year 1960.

The earliest known role-playing video games were programmed on this system. One of said games (Oubliette) was plagiarized and commercialized: it was the first title in the Wizardry series.
