Playable Characters

Rolf

Rolf is an agent of the Commander of Mota, stationed in the capital of Paseo, and the player's avatar in the game. He lost his parents at age 10 in a spaceship crash, which caused the Mother Brain, the computer controlling all of the Algo System, to ban all space travel. Recently, he has been having nightmares every night of a young woman fighting a demon, in which he is nearby, but unable to act. Seven months before the beginning of the game, he encountered Nei, who was at that point a child, on an unspecified mission and took her in.

Rolf is a fairly average character, who, for the first leg of the game, will probably be your main physical attacker. He wields mostly knife- and sword-type weapons and can wear most armor. His technique selection is pretty useful; he learns some offensive, healing, and utility techniques, although he will never be your primary healer and his offensive selection is outmatched by the first dedicated spellcaster you come across.

Nei

At the beginning of the game, it is revealed that Nei is a combination of human and "Biomonster", which are aberrant beasts produced by the (supposedly) now-defunct Biosystems Lab. Due to this, she suffers discrimination from the general populace, and thus has formed a strong attachment to Rolf, her guardian for the seven months they have known each other. Her unique nature means she grows and matures much faster than a normal human; when Rolf first found her, seven months before the game starts, she was a little girl.

Nei is a lightweight character; quick but weak, and incapable of equipping heavy weapons or armor. She wields claw-type weapons and light armor, and will be your healer for the first leg of the game. She gains levels quickly - almost twice the rate of Rolf - but her base statistics and stat growths are worse, putting her about even with Rolf in Hit Points and Technique Points even when she's nearly twice his level, and her attack and defense will always be worse than your heavy hitters, such as Rolf and Rudo.

Rudo

Formerly a member of the army (one is left to assume that it is Mota's army), Rudolph Steiner, also known as Rudo, left when his wife and child were slain by Biomonsters. Ever since, he has professionally hunted Biomonsters. When he hears that Rolf has been assigned to investigate the Biosystems lab - the cause of the Biomonster menace - he decides to assist. Return to your house after reaching Arima to recruit Rudo.

Due to his army training, Rudo is very strong; he has little trouble wielding large guns and wearing heavy armor. Aside from his guns, Rudo can equip knife-type weapons. He has the highest Hit Points and Defense of the party at the time you recruit him, making him a good choice for the front lines. He never learns any Techniques, however, meaning that he'll always have a TP score of zero.
