Mega Man 2 is the second game in the series of games that was originally started by Keiji Inafune with the release of Mega Man in December of 1987. The second game introduces an eight Robot Master stage select, energy tanks (E Tanks) that Mega Man can collect and use to refill his health at any time, and a password system which players can use to continue their game at a later time.

Story

In December of 2008, Dr. Wily had had enough of playing second fiddle to his colleague, Dr. Thomas Light. One evening that month he went into the lab and reprogrammed as many robots that he could get his hands on, making sure to reprogram the Light Labs industrial robots, and left with his new "army" for his new fortress, aptly named Monstropolis. However, Light's lab assistant and housekeeping robots were spared from being reprogrammed because they were encrypted, and Rock had a strong sense of justice and wanted to stop the madman from taking over the world and wanted to get his "brothers" back. As such, Light converted him into the super-robot known as Mega Man and he managed to stop Wily's army and bring him back to justice.

However, just six months later (in 2009), when the world thought that peace had finally returned, Dr. Wily returned with a new army of robots led by eight all-new Robot Masters, bent on taking over the world and defeating Light's prized Mega Man. While Light wanted nothing but peace for Rock, he knew that he had no choice but to send him out to stop his former friend and colleague, so once again, Mega Man was called upon to go after the "mad scientist."

Would he be able to stop him this time, or would Wily's evil ambitions come to light? [5]

Dr. Light is the founder of Light Labs (along with his former colleague Dr. Albert W. Wily) and the creator of numerous robots, including Rock (Mega Man) and Roll. He is a pacifist, but he realizes that violence is necessary at times in order to bring about a peaceful world. He was shocked and outraged that Wily revolted a year ago because he felt that he was merely living in Light's shadow, and as such, Light can't help but to feel somewhat responsible for the current state of affairs.

He doesn't want to see Dr. Wily killed or crushed, but rather, he wants to have him brought to his senses so that all this madness will finally come to an end. If this occurs, Wily would be back to normal and Rock would no longer have to be used as a war machine, but he still fears that this day would be a long way off.

Dr. Wily was a long-time friend of Dr. Light (the two attended the same university in the 20th century) and co-founder of Light Labs, but he grew insanely jealous of Light when Light received the 2007 Nobel Prize for the creation of the Robot Masters, as well as Light's winning of the LIT Manual Design Contest. Thus, in December of 2008, Wily reprogrammed nearly all of Light Lab's creations and created a powerful army that required a new breed of fighter to stop (see Mega Man).

In the end, the lab assistant-turned-fighter known as Mega Man brought him to justice, but Wily refused to give up. Thus, six months later, in mid-2009, Wily hatched a scheme to get his revenge on his former colleague and his prized creation and once again make a bid for world domination. He built a brand-new citadel from which to rule a newly built army of robot henchmen and, to top it all off, he built eight of his own Robot Masters, which began what would become known as the Doctor Wily series of robots, registered as DWN and starting with DWN. 009 because Wily is co-credited with the creation of DRN. 000-008.

Rock was the brainchild of doctors Thomas Light and Albert W. Wily, built after their first creation, Proto Man, went awol during its A.I. testing. Rock was built with a sister robot, Roll, and was designed to be a lab assistant who would work with the two scientists and help them with their day-to-day tasks in the lab. Light and Wily put a lot into their new creation, building it with the most advanced A.I. that they could come up with at the time (advanced in that it was very human-like, although they wanted it to behave like a child), but they were careful to adhere to Isaac Asimov's laws of robotics (especially that a robot will never harm a human being).

When Wily revolted in December of 2008 (see Mega Man), Rock volunteered to be converted into the fighting robot that became known as Mega Man in order to stop the scientist and his new army, knowing that the world's armies were not ready for the threat that Wily posed.

However, with Wily's new army out wreaking havoc on the world and seeking revenge against him, Rock must prepare to go after him once again. He was ready to live in peace, but he must go after Wily once more to attempt to bring him to justice. Will he be able to stop him this time?

Strength: He's a fast worker.

Weakness: He cuts too well.

Dr. Wily designed Metal Man off of the design of his and Dr. Light's Cut Man robot from the original Industrial Robot series. Metal Man sports sawblades for weapons as opposed to scissors and is far more agile than his scissor-wielding counter-part. However, he is at the disadvantage of being weak against his own weapon, the Metal Blade, which can defeat him in one direct hit. [3]

Air Man is Dr. Wily's first attempt at designing a sky-themed robot, able to control the wind, and as such, Air Man can create devastating miniature tornadoes that can damage and blow his opponents away. Air Man lives in a sky-high fortress protected by his own personal army of robots and is one of Dr. Wily's most unique creations. [3]

Bubble Man is Dr. Wily's first aquatic-themed robot, designed to be able to swim underwater with great agility. He is equipped with both a plasma cannon to attack opponents with as well as his signature weapon, the Bubble Lead, which creates bubbles that damage opponents on impact. [3]

Strength: Goes to sleep early and wakes up early.

Weakness: He doesn't rest.

Dr. Wily designed Quick Man to be capable of moving extremely fast, which he does. Quick Man's main attack advantage is that he can move faster than almost all of his opponents, and in addition to that, he can use his Quick Boomerangs as projectile weapons to throw around at extremely high velocities. His weakness, of course, is anything that is capable of slowing him down. [3]

Strength: He has a clean, neat life.

Weakness: He is clumsy when it comes to using his hands.

Dr. Wily designed Crash Man somewhat after crash-test dummies, which may sound somewhat humerous, but the helmetted design protects him from the blasts of his explosive projectiles. Crash Man is a deadly opponent, since his Crash Bomber provides extremely deadly firepower and his drill-arms can grind up opponents into scrap, but powerful blasts of wind are capable of damaging him (in reality they would send his projectile weapons away and make them useless). Flash Man was Dr. Wily's first attempt to build his very own robot that controlled the forces of time (since Time Man from Mega Man was once again back to his original programming and working with Dr. Light at Light Labs). Flash Man possesses the ability to temporarily freeze time and then attack his enemies, either by hitting them or by shooting them with his high-speed plasma cannon. [3]

Heat Man was the first fire-based robot that Dr. Wily built on his own (since Fire Man from Mega Man was now re-programmed and working with Dr. Light at Light Labs). Heat Man possesses a powerful scorching attacked called Atomic Fire and can also flame around his enemies to both confuse them and severely damage them. [3]

Wood Man was Dr. Wily's first tank-style robot, heavily armored and equipped with a shield. He is nature-themed and is equipped with the Leaf Shield, a weapon which spins around him to protect him from projectile attacks until he releases it to send hurdling towards his opponents. [3]

Item 1 (Platforms)

Rock receives this item from Heat Man and can use it/them (3 at a time) to access higher areas.

Item 2 (Jet)

Rock receives this item from Air Man. Once it is deployed, Mega Man has only a couple seconds to board it before it launches it a straight direction, which cannot be guided. It does not stop until it hits a wall or other unmovable obstacle.

Item 3 (Wall Climber)

Rock receives this item from Flash Man. He "tosses" it towards a wall and it acts like a spider, climbing the wall, up and down, allowing him to reach higher places.

FAQs

1. Why does the year take place in 200X, which is now more or less the present time?

A: The short answer is because that is the year which Capcom stated in the official story. However, the game was made in 1988, and so the early-21st century (i.e. 2009) seemed like the future to them (21 years from their current time). Moreover, when you look at later games in the series which contain animated sequences (anime), such as Super Adventure Rockman and Mega Man 8, you will find that the technology in Rock's time is not all that "advanced" in comparison with that of the present 21st century. While MM8 takes place circa 2014, they use computers of similar style and their cities are quite the same. The vehicles they drive, for example, are similar, if not the same, in SAR. The main difference, one may argue, would be the presence of robots, or sentient beings, but in the present time computer scientists and engineers are and have developed such technology, so it is a developing field.

2. Does Mega Man 2 really take place in the year 2009?

A: That is a fairly accurate date, yes. According to Rockman Perfect Memories, Mega Man took place in December of 2008, and this game takes place roughly six months later, therefore sometime in mid-2009. Additionally, this game takes place before Mega Man 3, the first game in the series to be given the "ambiguous" date of 20XX. [5]
